From the 1978 album, " Some Girls", it is a true story of a trip to Bakersfield by Mick, on a Sunday morning, heavily influenced by the country and western scene, and the availability of gospel music on the stations on the radio. This was the B side to " Miss You", with cosmic reflections that high light how the band had the ability to dig deep and create music that was thought provoking and enjoyable. The harmonies so pretty, the piano and instruments, including Ronnie Wood's use of the pedal steel guitar for the solo and highlights, bringing country to life for The Stones. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Lance. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
They recorded an entire album that was country/western themed. "Dead Flowers," Far away eyes," and more. It was a really good album, with many good songs. It was called "Country Honk." "Dead Flowers": is another really good song both lyrically, and music wise.
I'm not sure I've ever heard this live version before. It's great! I love Jagger's expression when he says the "Well you know what kind of eyes she got" line.
This song is my second favorite from the Some Girls album. That album came out when I was a junior in high school so it has a special place in my heart. They have slipped into country before. There is a very country version of Honky Tonk Woman actually called Country Honk. You should hear that too.
The reference to Bakersfield is about "The Bakersfield Sound" which influenced Country Rock starting in the mid 60s. It influenced The Byrds, Beatles, Dylan, Gram Parsons, Neil Young, The Stones, Allman Brothers and Southern Rock in general, and countless other Rock acts since the mid 60s. Buck Owens and Merle Haggard brought the Bakersfield Sound to the masses in the early 60s and Rock stars took notice as the Bakersfield Sound began to sweep the U.S. Country became a part of many Stones songs starting with Sticky Fingers in 1971.
There is a country song on their new album called Dreamy Skies which is as good as any they’ve done. Keith Richards was at Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday concert and played a country song Live Forever.
Thanks Harrison for your expressive reaction to one of my favorite Stones tune. The slide instrument played by Ronnie Wood is a Pedal Steel Guitar, a staple in country rock w Sneaky Pete, Rusty Young and Jerry Garcia being 3 prominent players. Also you hear the influence Gram Parsons had on Keith Richards + the whole band. Another Stones song w same Country vibe is Sweet Virginia, check out the Live version.
The album that this song came from, Some Girls, is so diverse. It gave me a much greater appreciation of their group. This is where people really miss out by not playing an album front to back. It’s really a shame. But I’ll run twenty red lights in Mick’s honor! Joking…😂😂😂
From the Some Girls album, the same album that has the song Miss You. Talk about different styles. Disco-ish and Country. The rest of the album is Hard Rock/Punk. It's probably my favorite Stones' album.
They spent time back around 1970 with a guy named Gram Parsons, he first came to attention when he joined the Byrds when they 'went country' (album "Sweetheart of the Rodeo", he then Moved on with another member of the Byrds Chris Hillman to found the 'Flying Burrito Brother's' Emmy Lou Harris was dating Gram at the time. They with Poco and Commander Cody were founders of Country Rock. Try "Christine's Tune" by the Flying Burrito Brothers" as an examaple
It's called a pedal steel guitar Harri, slide guitar is different, nice shout out to Bill Wyman and haved always loved the reference to Bakersfield in the song
Love how Mick is totally hamming it up in this video. The Stones can do anything. My favourite is Sweet Virginia… it’s worth the listen for the sax alone .
This was actually recorded during the Mick Taylor days. The stones were hanging out with Gram Parsons then . and his country influence could be heard on songs like Dead Flowers and Sweet Virginia. Also songs like Factory Girl and Prodigal Son on the Beggars Banquet album had a country blue grass sound to them.
I've never seen this video. I was prepared mentally for it to be mimed, but no! No doubt the sound was well produced to get this final outcome, but the band really delivers in this one. It looked effortless. I also had no idea that Mick was comfortable enough at a piano to accompany the band while he also sang, and I've been a fan for decades. Thanks for your great take on this! Does anyone know if this was from their album Stripped, or at least from that era?
This is my husband's very favorite Rolling Stones song. Great pick and reaction. Maybe they learned to play and sing country during the time they spent in Muscle Shoals.
I’ve been to Bakersfield, CA. Met actor Robert Fuller there at a country music festival (or whatever it was called). Robert played Jesse in “Laramie” and Doctor Kelly Bracket in “Emergency” among other things.
Nice! Now check out "Dead Flowers" or "Country Honk" or "Sweet Virginia"... Remember, the Stones were buddies with Gram Parsons for a time. Check out The Flying Burrito Brothers and the later stuff by The Byrds for more like this.
Indeed, Beggars is really the period where they started exploring country blues, as evident in “Dear Doctor, “No Expectations,” and even parts of the album’s Gospel-tinged coda, “Salt of the Earth.” “Factory Girl” probably has more folk elements, but it's such a unique amalgamation of Appalachian folk and world music with its conga drums and Hindustani tabla. (I love this album.)
I played rhythm guitar and sang this song with a band. I had a bass and harmonica player with me. It was fun to play live, getting the phrasing right like Jagger sings it was the only slightly challenging part.
Honky Tonk Women ,Dead Flowers , Wild Horses, much of the Exile on Main Street Album is country. The Stones were definitely into country. Many British groups were heavily influenced by American country. From the British invasion The Beatles to some extent were influenced by country and like the Stones the Kinks did a lot of country type songs and even put out a country style album Muswell Hillbillies.
“As Tears Go By” is a great country sounding song that Mick wrote for Marianne Faithful. He sings it himself too. I like his version best, though I make sure I get the one where the audience isn’t screaming.
For a real treat, you should check out their cover of Hank Williams song You Win Again. Another good one from The Stones is when they covered Waylon Jennings song Bob Wills Is Still The King.
The Stones have been doing country songs for years.. you just haven't run across any until now!! Check out Dear Doctor or Dead Flowers, just to name a couple.
The Stones made several country style songs. They are reported to be the most famous country band from the UK. 'Tis true. Try checking out "Country Honk".
That's what I thought of first, Country Honk. Basically a countryfied take on their hit Honkytonk Woman. No Expectations and Dear Doctor from Beggar's Banquet are pretty country too.
Whatever genre, country, reggae, blues, gospel, punk, rock, ballad, rock and roll, Latin, Asian fused, disco, dance, whatever genre of music The Stones play, they don’t just play, the just INHABIT. THE ONLY BAND THAT can and does! Greatest ever band. Go hear Country Honk off Let in Bleed album, The Country version of Honky Tonk Woman!
Great review, Hari! You can't show a picture of the girl with the faraway eyes because the real girl with the faraway eyes is the girl in your imagination...
From the Some Girls album. Love that album, love this song! You should also wrap your ears around their song Country Honk which is a different version of Honky Tonk Women.

The greatest rock and country band ever. Thanks for the reaction!
I agree! And this song great! Made me laugh 😂🤣. Had to watch it a couple more times 👩🏻🏫👏🏻🥰‼️
I'm not sure I've ever heard this live version before. It's great! I love Jagger's expression when he says the "Well you know what kind of eyes she got" line.

Stones could do it all. I've always loved this song.
Yep. Y they R the gr8est.

"And I was so pleased to be informed of this,
that I ran 20 red lights in his honor."
That harmony at 5:46 gets me everytime, fkn fantastic

One of my favs! Terrific performance by Mick Jagger.
Stones harmonizing with Keef is top shelf. The bad boys of rock can do it all!! Best band in the history of rock and roll 🤘

Memory Motel. Can’t go wrong with’70s Stones.
Thanks to whoever requested this! I’ve been trying to get someone to react to this forever.
So brilliant, so funny, cool as hell, so eclectic...Stones best band ever
This was the best….. driving singing this …love the Lyrics❤❤❤❤❤. I remember when this came out 77?
The Stones did quite a few country songs, “DeadFlowers”, “Wild Horses”, are a couple I remember.😊
Also sweet virginia ,Country Honk , I think Keith especially has always been a big country fan.
Aw, come on. It's the Stones. They know music!
When this song was released, it blew my mind. I absolutely love this song.
From the Some Girls album, the same album that has the song Miss You. Talk about different styles. Disco-ish and Country. The rest of the album is Hard Rock/Punk. It's probably my favorite Stones' album.
One of my all-time favorites. 🤣

Love your reaction! Perfect driving song in the middle of the night

Wow I have never heard the Stones like this and they are SO young here. Thanks for this Lance and Harri.
Love how Mick is totally hamming it up in this video. The Stones can do anything. My favourite is Sweet Virginia… it’s worth the listen for the sax alone .
Another favorite of mine…love this band!! ❤️

Check out their version of Waylon Jennings "Bob Wills is Still the KIng" live in Texas....
I love this song! It is so different and fun and I love Mick's phrasing. :)

It's comedy set to great music. I laugh every time. They are having a blast.
I bought this album as a teenager when it was released. Amazing talent.
Finally!!! You always come through with the best music!!! TY Harri
I've forgotten about this song....thanks! 😀🎶💕
Nice! Now check out "Dead Flowers" or "Country Honk" or "Sweet Virginia"... Remember, the Stones were buddies with Gram Parsons for a time. Check out The Flying Burrito Brothers and the later stuff by The Byrds for more like this.
You need to find the TH-cam video of their live performance of “Bob Wills is Still the King”.
There's a live stage performance of this.
The Stones had a fairly strong country vibe in their song, "Last Time" as well. It is definitely worth a listen.
Country started a decade prior to this song for the Stones...re Beggars Banquet...Factory Girl, Dear Doctor, No Expectations etc...
The Stones have always had a country element in their music , right from the earliest days , Listen to Country Honk and Sweet Virginia .
Dead Flowers ... even Wild Horses is 'Country-ish'
This is my favorite RS tune! 😅
Ronnie kicking that steel guitar!
Sheer genius,as usual,from the Stones!
Great memory! I sure miss Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart together.
I love that song!!!!!!!
The Rolling Stones perform country music, for me this is a revelation; to be honest, Mick played his role well.
HIGH HARRI.... This is my 2nd Favorite tune from the Stones #1= "Sympathy For The Devil". Too Cool.
Another country sounding one they do is Dead Flowers, check it out, great reaction
They also do a great twangy Country version of Honky Tonk Women called “Country Honk”. Fiddle and All. Highly recommend.
Nice Harri! They have 2 other great country songs. Sweet Virginia and a country version of Honky Tonk Woman called Country Honk!
Some Girls was a monster album in 78.
They often did, often rythm and blues with a touch of country
This is the Stones paying tribute to the Byrds Sweetheart of the Rodeo album. check out Country Honk!
U may be correct, Sir. Comedy song, parody, you know ?
“Dear Doctor” from the Beggars Banquet album
Fun song😊
“As Tears Go By” is a great country sounding song that Mick wrote for Marianne Faithful. He sings it himself too. I like his version best, though I make sure I get the one where the audience isn’t screaming.
For a real treat, you should check out their cover of Hank Williams song You Win Again. Another good one from The Stones is when they covered Waylon Jennings song Bob Wills Is Still The King.
The Stones play country music far better than most contemporary “country” artists. IMHO.
The Stones have been doing country songs for years..
you just haven't run across any until now!! Check out Dear Doctor or Dead Flowers, just to name a couple.
Dead Flowers is one of their best songs which is saying quite a lot.
I’ve always liked the country Stones. 😊
They were making fun
You have to listen to their song “ waiting on a friend “
Brad Paisley said the Stones would be one of the top 5 country bands
If they chose to do that. Great channel Harri most enjoyable.
EXILE ON MAIN STREET - the entire album. Definitely the Stones' crowning masterpiece.
Haven’t you ever heard Country Honk from the Let It Bleed album? Or Dear Doctor from Beggars Banquet in 1968…
The Stones made several country style songs. They are reported to be the most famous country band from the UK. 'Tis true. Try checking out "Country Honk".
Old Ronnie is KILLING that steel guitar!
A 35 year old Mick Jagger, wow
Check out 'Country Honk' by the Stones .... it's a Country version of Honky Tonk Women !
They play all kinds of country music......look into 'Country Honk' and 'Dead Flowers'
I was shocked! Pleasantly
That's what I thought of first, Country Honk. Basically a countryfied take on their hit Honkytonk Woman. No Expectations and Dear Doctor from Beggar's Banquet are pretty country too.
@@HarriBestReactions After Country Honk and Dead Flowers we'll try you on Fingerprint File just to mess you up.
Oh my this is such a great tune , apparently they were making fun but it really worked .
"Wild Horses" and "Dead Flowers" are other examples of the "Country" side of the Stones. The pedal steel guitar here is classic country.
the other country song they did you might like is Dear Doctor, off the Beggar's Banquet album. keep on rockin

From the Some Girls album. Love that album, love this song! You should also wrap your ears around their song Country Honk which is a different version of Honky Tonk Women.
This song is pure satire and I love it. Singing a country song while making fun of country music. Surprised Mick could keep a straight face.
"Dead Flowers"
The only time I got to see the stones was 1978 the year they released this album
I ran 20 red lights in his honor! Hah!
I have ways lives this track, so. Funny
Please react to Memory Motel, a kinda long song, but it is my favorite Rolling Stones song!!!
As adolescents, we modified the title to 'Far Away Thighs'
They did a great version of Bob Wills is Still The King. Jim
Would love to get your reaction to Harry Nilsson's "I'd Rather Be Dead" or "You're Breaking My Heart".
Are you the FIRST reactor to hit this gem? Probably! What a great comedic composition.
Gotta like Ronnie Wood.
Along the same vain, you should react to the Stones Sweet Virginia
Ronnie Wood on pedal steel is pretty good
Also in the same style... "Sweet Virginia"... of course "Wild Horses"!!
The Stones actually have several country songs! Another good one is No Spare Parts from the Some Girls bonus disc
From 68-74 almost all their songs were country infused bluesy rock and roll. Popped up quite often right up to 81 actually.
They've done a few country songs. Keith was a big fan of the genre.
