    The double-bass is the proverbial elephant in the orchestral room. Saint Saens had an amazing wit.

    I always have imagined this elephant as a goody simple-hearted one that inspires tenderness despite its size, probably a female elephant playing with her offspring.

    I´m working on with this piece and my teacher told me to check this out from TH-cam. So here I am and YES! I found exactly what I wanted and you helped me a lot! My teacher also told me that this piece sounds easier than it really is. But still thank you so much! (And sorry about my English.. I´m from Finland..)

    A great mini-master class. I was going to comment on the wonderful warm tone of the instrument, then read all the comments. No wonder! As an ex-cellist, I also appreciate the critical importance of a well made and well balanced bow, which can be far more expensive than most people would ever dream!
    I also tried Pirastro Eudoxa strings, but couldn't handle them - went back to Danish Jagar. Cheers, Col, NZ.

    I've learnt the piece on my 6-string bass, where it can be played entirely in the 1st position. But now I see much more beauty in this music and understand that I have a lot of work to do in intonating. The smoothness in that slide Bb-Eb, the delicacy in going up the octave on G are beautiful and educating.

    The double bass is hard only because if shifting I've played the elephant when I was barely getting to a professional and the elephant is a really good song and it was really hard because my fingers always got tired and my back would hurt u need to use almost every muscle in ur body to play a bass and u can get tired fast that's why I think bass is hard

    • @abagailszpara2201
      @abagailszpara2201 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeremy Morgan This is a double bass. The strings on it are G, D, A, and E. G being the highest pitched string and E being the lowest.

    • @McPhersonBassMaster
      @McPhersonBassMaster 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Abagail Szpara I'm thinking the question he was asking related more to Barry's answer rather than to what the tones of the strings are, but hey, at least those who don't know but end up listening to this will learn after your reply, so good on you for that.

    • @barrylieberman5854
      @barrylieberman5854  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Elijah Brockway
      As mentioned earlier, I use Passione strings, made by Pirastro. There are two types of these strings, normal and "stark" and I use normal.
      Not all strings are good for all basses, but these work well on my instruments.

    • @McPhersonBassMaster
      @McPhersonBassMaster 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I get that, I was just fairly certain that Jeremy wasn't asking about the tuning of the strings, which is the answer Abagail was giving, but rather the make of the strings - which was the answer you already gave.
