OMG I HADNT REALIZED UNTIL I HEARD IT THAT THE SECOND HALF WAS ODE TO JOY!! I learned it in 7th grade!!

I've learnt the piece on my 6-string bass, where it can be played entirely in the 1st position. But now I see much more beauty in this music and understand that I have a lot of work to do in intonating. The smoothness in that slide Bb-Eb, the delicacy in going up the octave on G are beautiful and educating.

Man... the tonal quality of this bass gives me a feeling akin to watching maple syrup from Vermont run down the sides of a stack of fresh sourdough pancakes... thick, syrupy... delicious!

Great master class, great master, this is one of my favorites pieces of the orchestral repertoire.

"the reason to live to play this piece" works also as "the reason to live, to play this piece" . Great, comma or not. I love the way you teach, the way you play, Mr. Lieberman.

An orchestral bassist I used to know did a combination of the "D-String" and "G-String" versions. Everything except the last phrase was the former version; I wonder what the strategy or desired effect was?

The bassist that influenced Britten’s bass parts was Robert Meyer. Meyer was Britten’s bassist and librarian. He ended up principle bass in the Vancouver Symphony. Meyer joked that you had to be careful warming up as Britten would listen and write it into your part.

I just picked up the violin for the first time in 13 years, and this is the tune I most want to get good enough to play.
