      me too! im making mine in different shades of blue and also white and black instead of the "traditional" colours though for increased wearability (because im a scandi and we usually wear only black to reflect the amount of sunlight we are getting in he winter months, which are usually 9 out of 12 months depending on where you live), and also with oak buttons instead of black ones. i absolutely cant wait for my yarn to arrive im so excitedddddd😬😬

      Marie, I'm so glad that this was helpful! Some of the older knitting tutorials are a bit cringeworthy now. Fun fact: I started TH-cam because I filmed some tutorials for my SIL and it was the easiest way to show her how to do a few things. I also filmed some videos for my crochet club to help them remember how to do something I mentioned at a meeting. :D Turns out some other people found them useful! :D
      I hope to someday be able to afford better captions for the videos versus the automatic ones that TH-cam provides to increase accessibility.

    I can't believe I've never heard of stranding before! I've been carrying all my colors across the pattern via twisting, and maintaining the stitches and tension that way is such a pain! • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can cut it and weave in the loose end - this is often what I choose to do myself. The fabric can be bulkier with two colors than with one, so sometimes people may prefer to continue to carry the yarn (even if it is not showing on the front) to have a similar feel to the fabric. But personally I'd cut and weave in the ends.

    Thank you for this tutorial! How do you make sure the floats don't unravel??

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Danah, I'm not 100% sure I understand your question. Floats cannot unravel unless you unravel the knit stitches since they're all twisted together. If your tension is too loose, then you could end up with a sagging float, so this is one reason why if you have a long float (5+ stitches) it helps to twist the carried yarn around the working yarn. This anchors it into place and prevents a long piece of yarn just sitting there. I hope this helps!

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sometimes I'll twist them and cary them up the side of the work if there are only a couple of rows between color changes. Otherwise I might clip and weave them in.

    Quick question, I'm knitting a baby hat (newborn), how would I decrease after about 4"/24rows (pattern I'm following is * K2tog row, purl next row*.) to the top of the hat maintaining the chequered pattern?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depending on where the deceases are located, I would end up making a few triangles in the hat - so if it is K2tog across then acording to the pattern I would K2tog in c1, then K2tog in c2, etc. If you're supposed to K2tog across the whole row, then I might just transition to a solid color for the top of the hat after that.)
      It is a little easier to try to keep up with the colorwork pattern if you are doing K4, K2tog or something like that. I hope this makes some sense.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. If I can avoid floats then I skip them entirely.
      However, there are times when you may decided to carry the yarn around the plain row if it might shift the fabric. But generally, I will carry the yarn up the seam.

    if your pattern calls for many colors, would you add them all at the same time when the first color is called for, or add them in as they are called for? For example if the pattern starts with two mc stitches and then calls for four c1 stitches-would you add the color 1 strand and then wait for the time when the pattern calls for c2, r would you just hold all your contrasting colors at the same time?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials

      You could twist the yarn after every stitch, I suppose, to avoid floats. However, this would involve a lot of untwisting of the two balls of yarn.

  • @KimWF570
    @KimWF570 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really appreciate this as I prefer to knit continental. But you don't mention color dominance or how you hold the colors in relation to one another. Is that not an issue?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the type of colorwork how I hold the yarn. With something with quick changes of colors, I will often hold both strands over my finger and then "pick" the color I want for the stitch. If i have to deal with floats, I still hold them together but make sure to adjust the tension and twist them around eachother every few stitches.
      I don't really treat the Main color any differently from the contrasting color. I hope this helps a bit!

    Thank you so much for this video!! I finally feel confident enough to try two colours, I’ve never been able to visualize it before. One question: would there be any downside to twisting the colours every stitch, other than it taking longer to complete the project? My perfectionist brain hates the look of floats.. I know they’re on the wrong side but still 😂 would twisting the strands every stitch affect the tension or overall project?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never tried twisting in between every stitch, so I honestly don't know how it would do. It could make the tension a bit tighter, but you could try it out on a swatch and see if you like how it looks!

    Thank you so much for your video! This helped me tremendously with my first fair isle project!
    How much slack do you typically recommend for the floating strand? I was disappointed to find that many of my floating strands were too tight when I went to try the hat on, so I had to spend a couple hours cutting out and weaving in the ones that I could haha. I would like to avoid this again in the future! I twisted the floating strand every 6th stitch with some slack, but not enough. All the strands that were too tight were on the one color rows. Thanks again!

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm so glad this video was helpful! I typically try to wrap my float every 5 stitches or so, making sure I vary where I do the wraps so you don't see them from the RS. I try to keep my floats SUPER loose so there is still stretch to the hat. It helps to pull the fabric open a bit if you need to to help the float relax. (Especially if you're making something with negative ease that will stretch. If you're knitting something with positive ease then it doesn't matter as much.) I hope this helps!

    Do you have a pattern for a basic zigzag scarf, using 3 colours?

    Is there any way to not have the floats? I'm trying to make a scarf and I want to have the pattern show on both sides.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, with colorwork there are going to be floats. Some options are to do a tube type scarf (so all of the wrong sides are in the middle) or you could stitch a backing fabric onto it maybe.

    Hello! I was wondering if you could possibly help me out on how to knit with two colours if you're alternating rows instead of stitches?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marco Daub Are you working flat or in the round? I don't have any videos on stripes right now.
      If you are switching colors ever 1 row (in the round) or two rows (flat or in the round) you can leave both yarns attached and make sure you're a little loose with the first stitch of a color change. If you are doing thicker stripes you might need to cut the yarn in between.
      If you give me some more specifics I can try to help explain more. Good luck!

    • @andreasdaub9219
      @andreasdaub9219 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very kind of you! I haven't started the project yet, but the plan is to work in the round, and do only two or three rows of the contrasting colour every 10 or so rows of the main colour.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah. In this case, I would leave your main color of yarn attached, and then join the contrasting color for the 2-3 rounds. I would cut the yarn after those rounds, and loosely pull the main color up so you can continue knitting. It should be loose enough to not pull the fabric tight AND tight enough so you won't get a super loose gap stitch. Alternatively, you could cut the yarn each time you change colors and then knot the yarn and weave in loose ends at the end. Good luck!

      For this type of simple pattern, it could be. For some more complicated color work patterns, it is a lot less work to do the stranded method.
