This was a move several years in the making. Kraft had to make a promise to Mayo to get him to stay. The only thing unusual is that they were able to keep it a secret.
I feel like Kraft has all the control no matter what. It's his team. A piece of paper doesn't change that fact. Kraft should have waited until all the good head coaches became available after the playoffs.
@bobwashburn7791 my biggest worry is that Kraft is going to hire someone with 0 gm experience from the Patriots tree. I am really worried that Kraft sees himself as Jerry Jones and sees himself the defacto GM. That will be a disaster for this franchise. He needs to go sit in his recliner with a hot chocolate and hire competent people to run this franchise then sit back and let them do just that. Keep a close eye on who he hires, that will be very telling.
Watch Kraft trust Mayo with the GM duties after Kraft got rid of the best coach because he didn't like his GM decisions.... which aren't even valid when Kraft wanted Mac at 15 and didn't want to pay either Lamar or Hopkins
The team needs to rebuild the leadership of football operations, starting with a new GM, who will then have to hire director of player personnel, college scouting staffs etc. hiring Mayo is not going to stunt the teams ability to rebuild. In fact it might prove to help expedite the process because the strength of the team is the defense which will only get better with the return of Judon and Gonzalez…job one for Mayo is finding an offensive and defensive coordinator, who knows maybe Flores and McDaniels might want to come back work with him….let’s not forget that the Pats have a ton of cap space to spend in free agency and will pick at the top of each round of in the draft. End of the day finding a franchise QB 1 is the priority then address the offensive line
The spin on the Pats' dynasty was the coach and the owner were both great - though some in the Boston media have argued against the coaches greatness. Kraft is very smart and he knows NFL history. He has hired 3 Hall of Fame coaches Parcels, Carroll and Belichick. He has also made a directive to the fan base that losing is unacceptable even with arguably the greatest Hall of Fame coach, Belichick, and even though in the history of the NFL no dynasty team has played winning football, never mind championship level play, immediately post dynasty. Robert Kraft obviously believes Coach Mayo has all the skills to head coach this team and return this team to winning immediately. Boston media can speculate all they want. We still have our Hall of Fame owner and in Robert we must trust!
It was contractual. The succession agreement enabled the Patriots to avoid a prescriptive interview process and (hopefully) attend the rebuilding business with HC in place. Mayo has a chance to be sure his coaching staff is in place and figure out what pieces to have in place ahead of getting a new GM. Having some input into that move might be helpful if the HC is in place.
That part wasn't obligated. They didn't have to give him that position. They probably just didn't want the hassle. I still think imo it's too rash and they do have pretty good HC out there.
We that wasn't my understanding but it wouldn't be the first time I've been proven wrong and it likely won't be the last. Alternate to it being a legal issue, declining to make good on the agreement that I've been led to believe was amended in Mayo's contract last offseason would almost certainly have provoked outcries from racial watchdogs if a candidate like Vrabel or Harbaugh were chosen instead. Outside of questions of obligation, submitting to the prescriptive series of interviews dictated by the NFL would mire the organization in the process leaving up in the air questions of team building with leadership up in the air. Hopefully Kraft can make a GM decision as quickly so to begin implementing a plan for rebuilding. What positions to fill with free agents and what direction to take with the draft. We'll see, I recall when Belichick was hired ahead of 2000. The history that preceded his tenure left me underwhelmed and the 2000 season validated that. Young coach could be great could be a disaster. Your rolling the dice but good for Mayo hope he succeeds. I understand wanting to interview experienced coaches. This is the best option for both parties. Mayo has a greater chance to excell with the Patriots and Patriots can still hold on to the notion they can somehow get back to their winning ways. It's not a slam dunk but a calculated risk with Mayo.
@@CasualViewerX How is he being set up to fail? He is actually in a excellent position and this formula of grooming coaches has had success at the college level. It's not like he taking over a new team that he doesn't know. He ran the Patriots defense and he is getting the 3rd pick. If anything he in the best possible position for a young coach too succeed.
A question that is impossible to answer... but we're gonna try cuz, media. Only time will tell, but it's IMPORTANT that we first hear from everyone whatever "expert" take they have. We have no idea whatsoever. That is the ONLY answer.
It's a garbage hire. The playoffs aren't even finished. Vrabel, Sean McVay, or Jim Harbaugh would have been better hires, especially for the offense. It's about finding a coach who already has head coaching experience. Now the team will have the chance to go 6-11 instead of 4-13. Great job, Kraft.
I've been a Patriot fan since BEFORE Bill Belichick and Tom Brady and I don't like this hire at all. Mayo was a great player and has done quite well with the linebackers, but our OFFENSE is the issue. Unless they find the greatest OC on earth I don't see how this is gonna work.
well the simple answer is it was either too soon or too late... ideally belichick should have been gone mid-season; and mayo handed the reins for half a season but given bill just left i wouldve preferred vrabel if available - a HC with proven track record that he can win with the right pieces
The Pats better not f$$k this up. We need a QB!!!!! As long as we get a top 3 guy we should be OK. Everything else is secondary. Save your Marvin Harrison!!! If we had 2 high picks...maybe. I don't want an overpriced free agent. I want my own guy. Let's grow together. We are a few moves away from being a playoff team. There are no great teams left. 10 wins is what we need. Fill in the holes.
Actually we NEED to get Marvin Harrison Jr because we don't have a legitimate #1 receiver that other teams are afraid of. And the o-line was a sloppy mess this season. Even Tom Brady himself couldn't have worked under these circumstances. Keep Mac and Bailey and bring in a veteran free agent and let them fight it out. Hell JOE FLACKO has the friggin BROWNS in the playoffs and Baker Mayfield is leading the charge in Tampa. We need an o-line and a deep threat at receiver. Drafting another QB will be a complete waste without fixing the other two issues first.
This is what they wanted to do this type of succession when Belichick was the def coordinator under Parcells. The Krafts are trying to avoid repeating old mistakes.
Once Vrabel was available it should of been a serious conversation. The quick slants guys like Curran and Perry campaign for the ex coworker is so obvious.
Krafts screwed up in prematurely offering Mayo the job. Two areas the pats are weakest in are offense and special teams. Two areas Mayo is weak in It would have been beneficial to interview others for such an important decision.
I'm not a pats fan anymore after this, kraft lied and said they wanted to get back to the playoffs, they won't with mayo, he's not even experienced enough to do it, kraft is a cheap bastard too.
I agree, we’re keeping the same pedigree of coaching…But as fans we deserve to have a chance at a veteran winner. We now get 4/5 seasons of amateur losing seasons and then get a rookie coach as a fix…WTF!? I don’t even enjoy being a pats fan anymore and I know I’m not alone…WE WANT TO GET BACK TO WINNING not working through trials and tribulations…smh..ugh so frustrating…
I’m excited to see what he can do as the coach I wanted Mike vrabel but Jerod mayo isn’t a bad choice well we’ll see if he is or not but I’m excited to see what he can do and I’m sure the locker room after 24 years will be more open and fun sure get serious with practice and definitely games but have a little fun from time to time bill wasn’t that guy and players have a history of saying the same thing after they leave
Media thinks they are the smartest clowns in the room. The deal was made so no need to talk to coaches. They key is to vet on a GM and on the offensive side of the ball. That is by far the more important hires.
Bedard isn’t happy with anything. Kraft likes Mayo , he didn’t want to bring anyone else in. Surround Mayo with good coaches, A competent Gm and some talent. Perry is right Vrabel was here , who says Kraft didn’t have him in his office and told him the plan. Vrabel might have said , great choice. We will never know. It’s a rebuild!! It’ll be a few years before they seriously contend for anything .
lets wait and see who is the new GM....thats the most important thing......hope this is someone with large exxperience in the patriots organization and others teams....not someone who is only work in the patriots
Jerod Mayo was absolutely the right choice. I love Vrabel but if we didn’t give Mayo a shot, I’m sure we would regret it down the line. The dude is a true leader. The only way he messes this up is if he can’t gain the teams respect but luckily for him, he already has it.
Unfortunately without the open process, this looks like a diversity hire. Hopefully not Flores 2.0. I want Mayo to be successful but I don't know if he's the best guy for the re-build.
Please! Terrible choice! Mayo has never called a play in his life. Mayo has had only ONE coaching job. He’s held it the last FIVE years: Patriots linebacker coach. Thats it. Mayo has never been in any other organization, so he has no coaching contacts to fall back on or to choose from. He’d be the youngest head coach in the league at 37, with no experience in anything. What was Kraft thinking???
...he has not had one coaching job but then list himself being a linebacker coach.... Flores was a position coach as well when he got his opportunity to be a HC in Miami
@@FlameWingMan Mayo has had one coaching job in 5 years of coaching and that’s been inside linebackers coach for the Pats. Thats it. Flores however, though his coaching was solely with the Pats, he had a variety of rolls over 10 years before moving onto Miami where he only won 4 games in his first year and finished 24 and 25 in 3 years there before getting fired for not producing. Mayo will crash and burn even worse and take us all with him.
Imagine if the Pats hired Vrabel over Mayo even though he had the wording in his contract that he be the next HC. The usual suspects on TV would have smeared the Pats to no end. The Krafts would have been the new racists of the month lol.
If you read comments on ESPN channel you'd see that people are still upset because "they set up a another black coach to fail" swear to God people are actually saying that. Alot. So either way your gonna lose
Yes. It was a horrible decision. 2 words would have corrected the trajectory of this organization...Mike Vrabel. Kraft has no balls to make a tough decision on revamping the whole operation. Status quo will be the downfall of RKKs current ownership after TB12. He was the cog for all the success of the Pats dynasty. Brady 70%. Belichik 25%. Kraft 5%.
Offense was 31st in scoring.....near the bottom in every offensive metric....hire a Def. coach....dont understand...no logic with the Patriots anymore....back to the 70s we go fans.
The way it looks is like, guy is president of a country and its tanking so he gonna step down and probably go be president at another place while someone in his cabinet is gonna take over
Mayo dos not understand offense and can't call offensive plays. This is a major defect. The Pats needed Vrabel, who is a great head coach and understands both defense and offense. I think Kraft didn't hire Vrabel because Vrabel is strong, experienced, and independent, and he pushed back against his former boss in Tennessee. Kraft didn't want an independent head coach who might push back sometimes. He wants an in-house coach he can control completely. Sorry, Vrabel, you're too good!

No, it's a "lets setup mayo to fail".
I don't see how this move helps the offense. They might as well ask Brady if he'd be interested in serving as offensive coordinator.
It’s about hiring a coach who will fall in line
@@jasonwilliamson8416 Amen!
Spot on@@jasonwilliamson8416
well the simple answer is it was either too soon or too late... ideally belichick should have been gone mid-season; and mayo handed the reins for half a season but given bill just left i wouldve preferred vrabel if available - a HC with proven track record that he can win with the right pieces
This team not winning anything for the next 15 years
The Pats better not f$$k this up.
Love it now they have more time to build a staff and a front office, #FireBedard
It's the same people that oversaw a 4-13 season and missing playoffs 3 of the last 4 seasons.
They also had something in place to have Josh McDaniels succeed BB, prior to him leaving to take the Raiders job.
This is what they wanted to do this type of succession when Belichick was the def coordinator under Parcells. The Krafts are trying to avoid repeating old mistakes.
Move too quickly? What do you mean? This has apparently already been decided for years now. Bring on a new era, Coach Mayo. 😎
No respect for this organization
Let Brady walk
And wont let Bill select at 3 and break Shulas record....no class
Very good for Robert Kraft, people too racist in Massachusetts, it was necessary to break the ice with a black coach.💯💯💯
Uhhhh...why toss racism in there? Dude has no head coaching experience. There's some coaches out there with experience & even championship wins.
Why not a Samoan tho? 🤦🏾♂️
Once Vrabel was available it should of been a serious conversation. The quick slants guys like Curran and Perry campaign for the ex coworker is so obvious.
Krafts screwed up in prematurely offering Mayo the job. Two areas the pats are weakest in are offense and special teams. Two areas Mayo is weak in
It would have been beneficial to interview others for such an important decision.
I pity pats fans under 40, yall have no clue what's ahead. Enjoy all the losing!!!
I'm not a pats fan anymore after this, kraft lied and said they wanted to get back to the playoffs, they won't with mayo, he's not even experienced enough to do it, kraft is a cheap bastard too.
by the way, kraft helps alot of people outside of the football team, but when it comes to the football team, he dosen't like spending.
You don't deserve anything. You DONT suit up
I’m excited to see what he can do as the coach I wanted Mike vrabel but Jerod mayo isn’t a bad choice well we’ll see if he is or not but I’m excited to see what he can do and I’m sure the locker room after 24 years will be more open and fun sure get serious with practice and definitely games but have a little fun from time to time bill wasn’t that guy and players have a history of saying the same thing after they leave
Mayo is not the guy.
@JamarAmmonsthey don’t know they want to start a negative conversation..
How dare the Patriots have a plan
Moving "too fast"? Sounds like they've been planning this for years.
lets wait and see who is the new GM....thats the most important thing......hope this is someone with large exxperience in the patriots organization and others teams....not someone who is only work in the patriots
If it was contractual that Mayo would be the next HC AND the media knew it, why would they still push for Vrabel? 😂
Jerod Mayo was absolutely the right choice. I love Vrabel but if we didn’t give Mayo a shot, I’m sure we would regret it down the line. The dude is a true leader. The only way he messes this up is if he can’t gain the teams respect but luckily for him, he already has it.
Yeah of course Bedard hates the move he knows Mayo ain't going to give him the time of day after the hit piece he wrote on Mayo
Wonderlic of 26, I think it’s safe to say this was a knee jerk hire that will only last for about 2 years
The Kraft’s are the same people that Believed Josh McDaniels was the answer prior to Mayo.
Never FN satisfied... They have to freaking complain about any and everything the patriots do.
I hope Robert lives for another 300 years cuz Jonathan will run the franchise into the ground.
Unfortunately without the open process, this looks like a diversity hire. Hopefully not Flores 2.0. I want Mayo to be successful but I don't know if he's the best guy for the re-build.
DEI in full swing...
I fully expect them to be hiring a new coach in 2 or 3 years..they should have hired Vrabel
picking a HC is like looking to marry by dating multiple girls when you already have a fiance if you already think she's the one you say i do.
ROBERT KRAFT YOU NEED A GM ALRIGHT
Kraft is a lot smarter than these talking heads.
Should’ve been Vrabel
Anything better than what we have now
Little Belichick/Belichick Jr. is not what the Patriots need right now....Kraft has lost it...Pats will be be 4-13 onward.
They should of waited the weekend
Media will curse if you go left curse if you go right and curse if you go straight
Well, if they did that, they’d be right
@@hammill444 Yeah because Vrabel is not the more qualified candidate right?
@@bobhurley1270 Trust me I believe it. Everyone's a victim lol
What in the fresh hell is Bedard blathering about?
Kraft 5%.
It’s the unknown we have become. What else we gonna do lol. That’s why it’s called REBUILDING ❤
Offense was 31st in scoring.....near the bottom in every offensive metric....hire a Def. coach....dont understand...no logic with the Patriots anymore....back to the 70s we go fans.
This reminds me of the niners hiring Jim Tomsula after Harbaugh. Nah.
Interview the "white" guy first..Lol!!
TEAM needs offense seems like all the Patriots care about is defense whether its player selection/coach selection.....this team cant adapt to 2024 NFL....4/5/6 wins per season the bar here for the near future.
2:48 - an orangutang pulling pieces of paper with random words on them can form a more coherent sentence.
Bedard... lol smh
Damn these people are negative.
its bc kraft already made the decision last year 😂
Since Tom left, the Patriots have lost more than half of the games they lost in 18 years w Tom Brady. That number will grow quickly 😂
Bedard is one of the most miserable sods that's ever been. You could give him 10 championships in 10 years and he'd moan about it.
Stop with the racist.
My problem is why hire a defensive coordinator when the team has been struggling with offense.
