I’ve come here again after months later because this concert is spectecular. And as a turkish i would like to make a statement about those red vests :D I think they tried to reflect turkish culture. This piece is written in modern turkey but in the ottoman period government’s soldiers (original name: yeniçeri) used to wear red jacket as their uniforms. And you might see the traditional turkish ice cream sellers still wear red jacket as a costume. also this piece reminds me of turkish history and i’ll write some infos for the people who wants to understand what is this piece probably about. Like why hopa is fast, Ankara is dark and kinda scary while bodrum is so sprightly delightful? And some fun facts are coming because Fazıl Say has hidden some traditional melodies in the piece and its really fun to listen while you already know the original versions of them. I will tell all these little details in the piece as the text goes on. So basically the piece’s main story is about the turkey before its modernized and as the piece goes on we can see the changes and revolutions has been made through the years. Simply it stars with the period of colapse of the ottoman empire and then war of independence years and it ends with the modern day civilized turkey. Even in this one piece you can travel turkey, be an observer on how modern day turkey has been created from ottoman by Atatürk, soldiers and millions, meet with turkish people and can feel their pain. Now I’m gonna add more details for curious people. I. Sivas: sivas is a city located on the anatolian side of turkey and you can find that eastern impression all over the city. It is also important location for independence war because Atatürk made a congress which has a milestone impact for war. So this part starts with “Sazım” (it means “My Saz” saz is a traditional turkish instrument, it looks like kazakh’s dombra) Sazım is a folk song written by “Aşık Veysel” he is a blind poet and folk-composer from Sivas who lived in those war years. in this part there is a huge inspiration from a very well-known folk song “Uzun ince bir yoldayım” (I’m on a path, long and narrow) it is popular among all over the country. It’s written by Aşık Veysel too. But this one is exceptional because nearly everyone who lives in turkey knows this song’s lyrics from beginning till the end. Fazıl Say literally makes you to fall in love again with this beautiful melody. My word to describe to this part would be: despair II. Hopa: Its a town of Artvin and located in the Blacksea region of turkey and neighbors with Georgia. This part is particularly fast because in the black sea region there is a folk dance called “horon” it is a very rhythmic and tiring dance :D (based on real experiences) while this dance goes on there is a traditional music for this and they are being played with a traditional instrument called “kemençe”. This is totally what Fazıl Say tried to write in the score and it is very well played by Jaemin. Maybe he doesn’t know it but he is playing his cello exactly how kemençe being played. One word to describe: awakening III.Ankara: I think this is the most hard part of the piece to listen to but it is very important to understand the war atmosphere in 1920’s. Ankara is Turkey’s capital where Atatürk’s mausoleum is, first independent parliment established and strategic point for war. So this part starts with a cannon-like sounds. Yunchan plays it very heavily just like it should be. In this part from start to finish you can truly feel the chaotic atmosphere, tension, danger, courage, determination and death. With the full of ups and downs in the middle you can also find the hope and pure love for country. As we keep to listen it there is a melody actually a military song composed in those times. Song’s name is “Ankara’nın taşına bak” (Look at the stone of Ankara) Again very famous song all over the country. Nice choise, nice interpretation. The ornaments somewhere in this part also reminded to me that Say’s piano sonata Kara Toprak/Black Earth (also that sonata is inspired from Aşık Veysel) Once again one word to describe this part: sacrifice/devotion IV. Bodrum: Last jazzy part finally has come :D bodrum is a district of Muğla in Agean region of Turkey. And also one of the most popular touristic spots in the country, both for foreigners and locals. In this part joy is all over the place. We can really understand how much Fazıl Say loves jazz. Even in a turkish interview he said he likes jazz so much, also he has Gershwin recording and Turkish March’s jazz version. So no big surprise for his listeners for this part. And another hidden well-known melody is here “Yıldızların Altında” (Under the Stars) its a poem written in 1928 and composed in that era. Very old song from Turkish Tangos and its still like the first day. Years couldn’t aged this melody. Also it really suits Bodrum. Before the final part we also hear again “uzun ince bir yoldayım”. We were heard it before in Sivas. Fazıl Say really did a great job with putting these various melodies throughout the piece. Anyway with Bodrum’s energetic structure it tells us that war is over and finally we gain our independence. In these years ,after the world wars and turks’ own war were over, they represent freedom and development. All seems great but the end of this part doesn’t seem peaceful at all. Opposite, the ending is horrible, everything is everywhere with all complexity. The end of this piece is the reflection of today’s Turkey i presume. I am not gonna get into the political issues here but if you know, you know. Our traditional one word picking ceremony: relief or liberty So i think i said all the things i’ve had and btw all the things i wrote here are my own ideas about this piece. Maybe this is not the piece’s main idea idk but as a person who’s listens classical music, researches history, languages, aware of politics and culture i just wanted to compile my knowledge here. Thanks to your great explanation, I've come to understand this wonderful piece of music better. Although the independence war of Atatürk is not widely known in Korea, I do know to some extent the person who shaped present-day Turkey. Inferring from the music, it seems that the great struggle for founding a nation indeed required many sacrifices. It makes me want to learn more about Turkish history.

To be honest, make you want to learn my country's history also made me flattered. For that reason i want to make couple of recommendations for you. For Turkish music, if you like folk-rock, i highly suggest you to look up the channel called "Anatolian Rock Revival Project". And for Atatürk's miricilous story you can read Lord Kinross or Andrew Mango’s biographies about Atatürk. I think first one is more easy to read for beginning. And also there is a movie called “Veda” (farewell) this is a great start to understand Atatürk.
Simply two world class musicians. There is something that hits different when two very proficient musicians who also happen to share a deep friendship make music. The organic, tacit agreement and coordination between them make their playing feel completely on the same wavelength. The last time I heard this special sound and energy was from YoYo Ma and Emanuel Ax. I’m sure future concerts and album recordings will come and I’ll just have to be patient!

이런 곡을 작곡한 Fazil Say도 대단하지만, 이런 곡을 이렇게 집중력있게 들을 수 있도록 명 연주를 한 두 사람도 대단!! 특히 3악장 끝에서 두 사람이 시간이 정지된 듯 바라보며 끝맺는 장면은 압권입니다. 특히 두 사람의 케미..정말 폭발하듯 넘치는 젊음과 열정, 거기에 세계 최고 실력까지.. 두 젊은 연주자의 향후 100년이 기대됩니다.

I'm so captivated by the sounds throughout. Mysterious but beautiful, and ended fun! . Can almost hear the whole orchestral instruments - strings, woodwinds, percussions, piano...perhaps just short of brass sounds? It opens my eyes how YunChan and Jaemin are so bold to explore the different ways of making musical sounds on their own instruments. Love also how they are so flexible shifting from one style to another and performed marvelously. Excellent job! Thank you Jaemin, for sharing. ❤❤❤
Fazil's music is always innovative and delightful. You really need to listen to his works several times to fully understand him, but it is well worthwhile. This work cleverly depicted the ethos of aspects of each city from busy streets, to building, to Jazz dance, all with a middle eastern reference. Incredibly busy second city. Loved the harmonies, discordances and rhythms and the rhythmic and extremely demanding interaction between both voices.. I came across Say's music first with the Jussen brothers for whom Fazil wrote a work. These two brilliant Korean young stars have made this work their own. FELT THEIR STAGE POSITIONING WAS MUCH BETTER FOR THEIR SIGHTING THIS TIME. The cello sounds were at times haunting (rather like the Australian indigenous peoples' didgeridoo in tone)-very clever bowing throughout by Jaemin, and Yunchan is, as ever, commanding in his role, including the effective use of blocked strings. Absolutely adored Bodrum! Made me wish I was 18 again, rather than 81!! Nice stage vests too-a change from the ubiquitous black and white. This is a world-class stage duo but during Bodrum it was also nice to see the kid in them both.
81 is a great number. 8+1=9 and number 9 means growth and attainment in numerology. Great music will help you with growth and attainment like it will for Jamin and Yunchan. Salute!

Fazil Say 데뷔 앨범 사서 들었던 거 기억나는데, 일단 반갑고, 우리나라 음악 영재들이 이렇게 현대음악까지 공연하고 즐기고 있다는 사실이 너무 뿌듯합니다. 임윤찬군과 한재민군이 함께 공연하는 걸 많이 보고 싶네요.
열정,유머,중동의 대추야자열매같은 spicy함, Nice&jazzy, 세련된 그루브감, 신선한 날것 그대로 번득이는 천재성,매혹적인 그러면서도 우아함도 잃지 않는 음악과 연주 너무 멋져서 입이 다물어지지않네요
진짜 강렬하고 설레도록 멋진...
근데 하...반짝이...그것도 뤠드..^^;;;;;
암튼두분 브라보입니다

마지막 무대 나갈때 어깨에 손얹고 걸어나가는거 보니 이 아이들이 아직 아이들이 맞긴 맞구나 싶네요.
연주할땐 세계 최고 자리에 올라가 있는데 그 외의 시간에는 그저 10대 아이들인가봅니다.
너무 예쁜 모습이어서 미소가 지어집니다~
형같은 한재민(15) 품에 동생같은 윤찬림(17)이 폭 안기네!
윤찬림 연주를 자주 보다보니 협주 끝나고 지휘자에게 안기는 것은 윤찬림의 습관인듯! ㅎㅎ
작곡자도 천재지만 두 연주자들은 못지 않게 미친 천재들이네요. 이런곡을 연주 하는 두 젊은이들 자랑스런 한국아들!
이런 곡을 작곡한 Fazil Say도 대단하지만, 이런 곡을 이렇게 집중력있게 들을 수 있도록 명 연주를 한 두 사람도 대단!!
특히 3악장 끝에서 두 사람이 시간이 정지된 듯 바라보며 끝맺는 장면은 압권입니다.
특히 두 사람의 케미..정말 폭발하듯 넘치는 젊음과 열정, 거기에 세계 최고 실력까지..
두 젊은 연주자의 향후 100년이 기대됩니다.

I'm so captivated by the sounds throughout. Mysterious but beautiful, and ended fun! . Can almost hear the whole orchestral instruments - strings, woodwinds, percussions, piano...perhaps just short of brass sounds? It opens my eyes how YunChan and Jaemin are so bold to explore the different ways of making musical sounds on their own instruments. Love also how they are so flexible shifting from one style to another and performed marvelously. Excellent job! Thank you Jaemin, for sharing. ❤❤❤

Fazil's music is always innovative and delightful. You really need to listen to his works several times to fully understand him, but it is well worthwhile. This work cleverly depicted the ethos of aspects of each city from busy streets, to building, to Jazz dance, all with a middle eastern reference. Incredibly busy second city. Loved the harmonies, discordances and rhythms and the rhythmic and extremely demanding interaction between both voices.. I came across Say's music first with the Jussen brothers for whom Fazil wrote a work. These two brilliant Korean young stars have made this work their own. FELT THEIR STAGE POSITIONING WAS MUCH BETTER FOR THEIR SIGHTING THIS TIME. The cello sounds were at times haunting (rather like the Australian indigenous peoples' didgeridoo in tone)-very clever bowing throughout by Jaemin, and Yunchan is, as ever, commanding in his role, including the effective use of blocked strings. Absolutely adored Bodrum! Made me wish I was 18 again, rather than 81!! Nice stage vests too-a change from the ubiquitous black and white. This is a world-class stage duo but during Bodrum it was also nice to see the kid in them both.
81 is a great number. 8+1=9 and number 9 means growth and attainment in numerology. Great music will help you with growth and attainment like it will for Jamin and Yunchan. Salute!
