Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, this is not working on my 4K LG OLED TV. I can select "Display Options" but when I go to select "Set a specific screen resolution" it repeatedly bumps me back to the previous menu without being able to select a specific resolution.
This has been happening lately with 4k tvs. It’s a frustrating issue. If you connect to a non 4k monitor/tv and make the changes it will allow you to do so without bumping you out. It’s a annoying workaround but does work this way. After that just connect back to your 4k tv and you are good to go. The settings will save and transfer right over.
@@OfficialChaseBrogan Yes, I read that about that. It seems that changing the resolution here only seems to work with menus and such and not during game play. My problem is that the game play is choppy (lower frame rate) on the 4K display. The game play works just fine on both of my PC monitors (2560 X 1440). I did go through some of the retroarch menus about adjusting it there but could not seem to find what I was looking for. I'll need to look a bit more thoroughly next time. Perhaps there is a way to manually set the resolution in a configuration file somewhere. Going to be doing a bit more research on the matter. Hopefully I can find a solution.
@@tomthumb0 that should lower the resolution throughout. It did for me when I went through this but that was several months back. It’s updates everything changes so it could behave differently for you depending on your setup and your version. You can adjust resolution in retroarch. That seems to have worked. Next I will work on the cropping that is happening now. Not much. I'm sure messing around with some of the settings will take care of it. Thanks.
I just had to follow the steps of changing the resolution BLINDLY. This video was definitely helpful! I had set my new RPi4 to some weird resolution that wouldn’t allow the command line or menus to show up. Thank you!
Thanks for this! I recently got a 4k tv and tried playing Zelda 2 and it was very stuttery. I read how to set the resolution online, but got the black screen of death when rebooting. I thought I was going to have to start from scratch. I never would have thought to use the other hdmi port on my pi.
That's the lifesaver from this video I think! I went through the exact same thing. Total panic mode when I first did that myself because of course at that time I had no backup and had spent weeks on the custom card collection.
Thank you, I had gone through the Disply/Resolution menu but for some reason it just didn't work and I moved on to other fixes. Came back to it after this video and now I have my RPi all set up to crush these speedruns. Thank you thank you!
I had an issue that others are experiencing where it would just refresh the page when trying to select change resolution before the options are presented. I had tried a few suggestions to change the configuration file to include "hdmi_group=1 hdmi_mode=16" for example but would still force 4k. I had tried an easier work around of plugging it into an older 1080p monitor and choosing the option there and saving the settings and then plugging it into the 4k tv.
That’s great to know. Thanks for sharing that I’ll make note of this in case others have the same issue. Always great to have multiple solutions. Thanks again! Much appreciated.
I just got a new 4k TV as my 1080p died and was getting so much lag playing Super Mario Allstars. WTF?? It was perfect at 1080p. Glad I found this and there is a solution for this issue. Thank you!!!
The reason why this happens is if you connect the hdmi to the socket furthest from the power connector. You can change the resolution from raspi-config if it is connected to hdmi 0 next to the USB C port. Or manually in config.txt for 1080p hdmi_group=1 hdmi_mode=16 or 720p hdmi_group=1 hdmi_mode=4 however changing to 720p can strangely disable WiFi connection
Thanks very much for this video. I had a similar issue to the others in the comments where games would display perfectly on various computer monitors but would glitch in a weird way when using my large TV: when the whole screen needed to be redrawn, the bottom third to half of the screen would warp and glitch, like it was having a hard time catching up, making playing fast games almost impossible. Manually setting the resolution, even to the highest possible resolution and refresh rate, fixed the problem!
Oh man you saved my life! For some reason after I installed the bezel project it made all my games run awful on my 4k. Then I tried to change the settings and all that was there was the automatic setting, till I plugged it into a monitor. 🤙
Upon booting emulation station, my Pi crashes on 4k displays and specifically the Samsung TV we use. Do you suggest setting it to this resolution on a monitor first and then trying again on a 4K display? Thank you, Julian
Thank you so much for this video, I just wish I was more patient and watched until the end to figure out why I get a black screen after changing the resolution before I completely erased my sd card and started all over. Well, you learn from your mistakes :)
Thanks for the info on switching HDMI ports after getting the black screen. Question: once I changed the resolution and got the black screen, I switched to the other HDMI port and it worked perfectly. What will happen if I switch back to the original HDMI port now? Is the port useless now or will it function normally now too?
