I've had the same zippo for 10 years, I have carried it probably the last 4 years everyday and the lid has always been pretty loose since I got it back out. I just fixed it in 5 minutes and I'm grateful for this video. I was worried I would break the hinge before.
Brand spanking new black crackle came with an underbite. Which I heard is pretty common for these. Fixed in 30 seconds or less. Thanks so much brother 🇨🇦🤘🏻
I haven't run into this problem yet, but it's good knowing that fixing it isn't too complex. Didn't know how important Zippos are to you, it's something that is old and tested, and can last w/care.
I love this video tho I would like to know what kind of doors your messing with as a carpenter I've never installed a door that you can move like you said and after watching this video I even checked my door in the house and none of them have and wiggle in the hinges at all if your doors are like this they most likely need new hinges
Thanks for this. Haven't found a video on fixing the hinge as good as this. I hate having to send things in, or have something fixed for me if I could do it myself, so I will try this.
@@ZippoFanatic77 I will. Problem is, nobody I know likes zippos, but if I do find someone who does, I will recommend your channel. Have you tried reddit for zippos? It's nice just to scroll through and see everyone's posts.
I got a new brass Zippo with a nice and tight hinge but with a underbite. I simply took the lighter without the insert installed in my hands and take my thumbs, (one behind the other) and press/push the top in the direction it needs to go. Super simple. No tools required. Armor case may be a bit to tough to do. Don't have one and never tried.
Thank you for the tips! Very helpful. I just shared your video to the Best Damn EDC group on Facebook that I'm a member of. A lot of zippo fans over there, and figured this may help someone else out. Thanks again!
Got to try the Victronox Swiss Tool MX plier tool hinge fixer lots bigger than the Spirit Swiss Tool both stainless steel high crominum content steel ! Nice video Mike !
Yeah, a hinge can be A LITTLE loose when open, but it’s very obvious that Zippo’s manufacturing standards have become sub zero as of the past 20 years. Amazon is full of people reporting genuine products as counterfeits, because they just can’t imagine a real product by an established brand would feel this shabby. It’s the age old brand name problem, where the accountants have come in and found out how badly they can make the construction so that people just about value their time sending it back more than they hate the quality. Corporatism. As someone with a very fond memory of the 80s zippo I got from my brother, I’m just not gonna buy a new one. Breaks my heart when companies piss on their legacy like this…
I have to admit I took delivery of a new zippo today which I bought from the website and the hinge is loose AF it seems really poor quality. Cost nearly £40 with delivery which is way too expensive for the sub pay quality. Not pleased with it really. I had one years ago and it I’m sure it was better constructed than my new one.
Also received a zippo I ordered today, tumbled brass armor. Hing was loose out the box, i guess its normal then. I have another armor zippo and hinge aint as bad but it’s antique silver. Not sure if its just a brass thing or zippo armor thing, but most of my regular zippos dont have that much play in the hinge. Shout out to ZF77 great video great chanel! 🤙🏾
I got a tumbled brass armor a few hours ago on your recommendation. I love it, especially the sound and weight, the hinge was absolutely terrible out of the box though, like every zippo that isn't a replica 😅 I start by squeezing the hinges together from the outside edges, then get them all aligned flat by squeezing them from the inside like you do. From there I take a hand file to the four corners around the hinge if they need it then I'll put a rag over the lighter and lightly tap the top corners down into shape with a hammer especially if theres a gap closer to the hinge than the wheel.
Just got a Tumbled Brass Armor and my hinge was loose out the box as well. Wondering if thats just normal i guess with zippo armor. Other than that great video and great channel. ZF77 is a awesome.
Thanks for your video, I just bought a 40th anniversary pipe zippo and it came with a VERY loose hinge. I’d say almost an 1/8 of an inch of movement from left to right. Not sure if I should send it back or not.
Vice grips does the same thing as the pliers btw, it flattens the interior hinges quickly and only take about a second. I didn't have any plier on me when I watched this so I used the vice grips instead!
Thanks for the video. Good repair ! BTW, I think doing tricks with a Zippo is OK and part of the experience of owning one, or many. One of the pleasures, and if not purpose of this great object, is to play with it. Keep going. Great channel.
@@ZippoFanatic77 Thanks for the reply. I examined the hinge and the pin lightly shuttles when I push it. I followed your advise and went delicately. I used a precision screwdriver along with a soft hit with a hammer just like yours. Although I might not have your dexterity, I have been able to reach a good result. All is perfect now. Zippo’s design seems to be very forgiving ! Thank you for directing our attention on the normal situation in having a backlash (or play) on the hinge. I never noticed. Best regards.

My problem with the loose hinge is that it causes the lid to open when not in use, exposing the fuel. I had to refill my Zippo way too often, barely using it when having very loose hinge and crazy lid wiggle.

Love this guide and the 10 minute one where you wrapped the pliers in electrical tape, that’s what I did with my leatherman. However the teeth on yours look more grippy, do you know the brand of those pliers? I tried looking on Amazon. TIA
I wouldn't advise using a paper clip to replace you pin. The metal paperclips are made of is very soft and would bend easily so your lid would be very loose.
