Xenia was my very first coral, after a few months it almost died off and was down to just a few polyps, a year later it had completely overgrown my entire tank.
I love pulsing Xenia. When people said it grows fast I thought they were talking bollox. I was wrong mine has gone mental. I frag loads and take it to the lfs constantly.
AKA "Dont do it unless you never want to get it out of your tank" coral list. Zoas are the only ones I'd say are "beginner friendly" in that sense. Don't get me wrong, a soft tank can definitely be nice, especially when you set all the weeds to compete with each other, just don't have an aspirations of transitioning to stony corals of any kind.
Tried so many times to grow Zoas and they just never last, tried them in all different positions, so I have completely given up on them, great video as always 👍
I have all those corals in my tank but so many people can't keep pulsing coral it can die for no reason I find the best way to keep it is in medium to good flow and I think it does prefer medium to bright light if that helps anyone
I made the newbie mistake of getting Xenia a decision I regretted for years and took me 3 years to get rid of all of it in my tank and I do agree it belongs as #1 on the list once you get it you regret it 😁
I lost all my fish last month bar a sail fin tang and 1 lucky green chromis, dreaded white spot got them, followed by a massive rise in nitrates for some reason, once that is under control I’m very tempted to add coral again after this vid
I have zoa , green polyps , kenya tree, candy cane and machrrum. All doing great but Xenia is not , since I got it stop pulsing and be very tiny. May you advice me?
I have went from slowly growing lps to boom all stony corals struggling mightily about to retest everything but no problems noticeable even after water changes but all other fish and my rock flower anemone looks good but the 5 stony corals are struggling I will retest alk as maybe that dropped due to me dosing vibrant (I dont think I overdosed so idk) ...
Hi Alex, do you have any idea why Xenia will stop pulsing, also why it doesn't really grow well, what could be the reason. My LPS do fantastic and other softies, but Xenia does nothing.
I started with 3 xenia heads now I have over 200..they started pink but as it’s grown it has turned into a nice pale type of colour and pulses constantly
how do you pull Zoas out without releasing toxins and nuking the tank ? also how do you prevent any coral from spreading, especially things like encrusting and such.. i always hear people talk about it but never show it
I don't follow all the proper safety procedures so I don't think i'm the best person to ask. Saying that, I don't think zoas are ever likely to nuke a tank - if you're worried, put a fresh bag of activated carbon in afterwards to soak up any toxins. You can isolate encrusting corals on an island, but some will break free and float to another place. You can't stop a coral from encrusting, you can just take measures to control the spread.
Wow! The difference between the ever grow and the kessil is insane! So deep and much more color pop! Is this the same as the reefbreeders in america right? I wish I did nt have plans to upgrade and went with the big tank from the start or I would go with that instead of radions or ocean revive. I cant really move those to a bigger tank, unless I go with the hybrid and I would love to do that but need to have a canopy;y made and its short term so not worth the effort! With radions I can always add another light o upgrade plus I have heard the g5s compared to the look of a hybrid anyway because of the spread and lack of disco and no need for a diffuser like previous models! I was also looking into a used kessil but after your video I am staying away fro it,plus i heard lots of complaints on the programming and kessil wont address i since it is discontinued!
Yes I have one. Great for temperature alarms and out of water alarms. And very occasionally testing par. But you need the Web server to make the most of it, so it's a better 2nd hand buy for me 🙂
Hi Alex! great video my friend! In the marine hobby, are there any corals that would survive with just putting lights on a couple of hours a day or just simply with daylight please?? cheers Alex!😀👍
Still trying to reduce electricity use? I don't know how corals would get on with minimal hours of light, but I'd expect not very well given what they get in the wild. But I've never tried so I can't say for sure. Soft corals are probably a better bet. Nps corals would love it!
Love your videos, just subscribed! I have a question that I’ve been looking through your videos trying to find an answer to, but what would be defined as low, medium, and high flow? I’ve seen loads of conflicting info. I’m new to saltwater and am doing research to try and set up a ten gallon nano reef! Thanks for the help!
Good question and probably difficult to answer here. I'd say low flow will mean your corals are swaying very gently and peacefully, high is when they're getting blown around most of the time and medium is somewhere in between.
Truly try to go bigger than a 10g but i understand we all start somewhere but i will tell ya if your successful a bigger tank is always the inevitable end result...consider a sump no matter the size it makes life and upgrades down the road a breeze and later ya can just tie in the two displays to save $...your options are endless and i wish ya all the best the turtle wins in this hobby go slow 🍻 and enjoy this hobby is super fun and relaxing :)
Hi I'm new to reefing and i need help identifying something that is growing on my live rock. I have no idea as to what it is. Is there a way for me to send you an email with a picture? its white with tentacles.. i just noticed this morning that there are more growing.... Thank you.....
Same here. There IS such a thing as a "tank is too clean". As soon as I started adding sps corals and my ppm went to zero xenia perished. And it's one of those corals that can not be fed. It simply filters nitrates in the water.
Stability is more important than the numbers, but if you want to aim for a rough ball park - salinity of 35ppt, alk 8-9, calcium maybe 420, mag 1300, nitrate 5ppm, phosphate 0.03.
Pulsing Xenia is one of my favorite corals by far!
Xenia was my very first coral, after a few months it almost died off and was down to just a few polyps, a year later it had completely overgrown my entire tank.
My xenia did that, then all of a sudden it started pulsing again and grew everywhere even on the back glass of the tank
Cool video! Softies aren’t my tea but always amazing to see soft dominated tanks.
I love pulsing Xenia. When people said it grows fast I thought they were talking bollox. I was wrong mine has gone mental. I frag loads and take it to the lfs constantly.
I love your videos so much! 100% underrated channel
Love your commentary you never fail to make me chuckle you also have great information.

I love pulsating Xenia but my peppermint shrimp eat it faster than it can grow so I’ve had to set up a Nano tank for it 🙃
Love your videos! Always packed full of great info.👌🏻👍🏻
I had some beautiful rastas melt away after growing and my buttons took over. Welcome to reef keeping hahaha
Tell me about it!

Clove's are a wonderful coral particularly in Nano tanks and love high nutrient tanks. Can't get them to survive in my low nutrient system though.
I made the newbie mistake of getting Xenia a decision I regretted for years and took me 3 years to get rid of all of it in my tank and I do agree it belongs as #1 on the list once you get it you regret it 😁
Great video as always mate, I've just stuck some GSP on the back wall of my tank fingers crossed it spreads 👌
mushrooms and kenya trees grow fast, but kenya trees are a weer like xenia - both will grow everywhere, including in your filtration.
Great upload and great beginner corals 👍🏻
1:51 - "just as Arousing" - go on...
Now I just need quarantine to end 🙃😂
Xenia is so amazing I love it
Soap,Oil,Butter? Sounds like fun.

Hahaha nice spin on invasive. As long as you know what you're getting into, though, I guess they're not bad. :)
One day I hope to get a nano tank with solely Xenia’s and green star polyps, just wondering, are they compatible???
Yep, popular combo 👍

you have a dosing pump or alk/cal reactor?
@@skitf_001 I manually dose daily at 2pm

Yep, Evergrow = Reefbreeders :-)
Can anyone tell me why my mushroom leather isnt growing?
Great content! New sub.
Awesome mate
Hello mate, where is a good online store in the uk to buy corals ?
Prestige Reef 👍
Afternoon Reef Dork do you use your Seneye if so give a review of it for us. Shire I spied one on your tank?
Yes I have one. Great for temperature alarms and out of water alarms. And very occasionally testing par. But you need the Web server to make the most of it, so it's a better 2nd hand buy for me 🙂
What’s the zoa called at 2:27
Can't remember i'm afraid...
Man! I'm not sure if I want another cichlid tank or a reef tank now! (new tank will be here soon!)
Can I grow coral with salt, water, and a rock

@@ReefDork Hi Alex! what are N.P.S. corals please??
Non-photosynthetic
Is it true that Zoas are poisonous?
Some of them contain palytoxin which is poisonous
Clove polyps ALWAYS melt in my tank
☹
Hi sir where can I get this coral in India.
I don't know I'm afraid
@@ReefDork why sir

Best to post a photo on a forum or a Facebook group like Worldwide reefing 🙂
i got all of those yey 10 points for me
I love xenia but i cant keep it. I did determine my tank is to clean 😣

Luckily all of these, except the zoas, can easily be removed by using dog wormer. Unfortunately it also kills bristle worms and feather sisters.
My emerald crab absolutely destroyed my clove polyps. He pulled the entire thing off its membrane 😭
I can never keep Xenia in my tank. I can grow any other coral just fine.
Why are corals so expensive? At least here in the UK they are!
You're just looking in the wrong places...
Oh the pest coral video 🤣🤣🤣
