      I would more than rather to just walk into a store to get something than wait for days and have to pay a bunch of people extra that shouldn't get much money in the first place to have them fuck it up and throw it at my door. But also I wish the stores would just have what I needed. You always see stuff that nobody bloody buys or even wants to buy. If stores just sell shit that people need instead of stupid idiot accountants/purchasers stocking what they like we'd have more people buying in shops.

      The IIe backpanel is aluminum alas.
      If you need to make clean holes in panel aluminum nothing beats a two-part punch die. Motorheads use these all the time, so do Test & Instrumentation guys and A/C guys and marine electricians to name a few. They are thirty to two hundred bucks and they cut clean holes in two steps faster than it took to trace that nickel with a Sharpie. There are TH-cam videos on the commoner sorts. They even come in D-sub patterns and keyed holes nearly impossible to approximate with a burr.

    Built-in analog audio on RPi isn't great, since Pi doesn't have proper DAC.
    That's probably why USB audio device was connected.

    • @klausstock8020
      @klausstock8020 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Considering that the original Apple II had a speaker connected to an address decoder (so it would click whenever this memory location was addressed, to produce 1 but digital audio), the Raspberry Pi's built-in PWM audio is, paradoxically, probably too good for an accurate emulation. It is much more straightforward to the 1 bit audio with a proper DAC.

I would come up with some idea and jerry-rig everything, hot gluing shit all over the place, just making a total mess of stuff (I'm definitely not saying that your guys' work was that bad, I was just giving an example of my work), and my erstwhile grandfather would stay up half the night cleaning up my mess and generally making everything look neat and orderly. Funny thing, before computers were everywhere and everyone (kind of) knew how to use them, you could genuinely make a business out of word processing. My mother ran such a business out of our house the entire time I was growing up. She also did medical transcription - taking a doctor's audio recorded notes and putting them in text format.
      She only ended up closing shop in 2004, and that was mainly because we moved away from all her clients.

    Finishes the project with style.
    Anybody critical of you being disrespectful of the others' work needs to pay attention: You left all of their additions intact (apart from the disconnected parallel port) and only modified the setup to be more stable and durable. We should all have as much patience and tolerance for bodges in a long-term product as you had because when you know a project is being finished and given as a prize, you ought to have your best presentation -- and this really is just about the best you could achieve for the work done here.
    The series was great and really goes to show how even a shell of an old computer can still be made relevant for modern use, and I think all of you made great additions to the project -- and that you, 8-Bit Guy, did a great job of closing up the project and bringing a professional feel to final product.

      @plebetopro5786 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I realize this was meant to be used as an Apple IIe emulator primarily, but since the case is so huge, there's a lot of really cool functionality that could be added to it. Things I'd personally add:
    1. Put an ethernet port on the back of the case in one of those empty holes (the one feature from the first video that no one carried on). I know wifi is easy, but it's nice to have options.
    2. Since there's so much room in there, I'd add some USB controller adapters with the ports on the back (using more of those vacant slots). That way you could use official Genesis/Megadrive controllers on those games, SNES controllers on SNES, NES on NES, PS1 on PS1, N64 on N64, etc.
    3. I'd use an SD Card extension port so the SD card is accessible from the outside of the case (or mount the Pi itself in a spot that'd make it accessible).
    4. I think I'd also possibly relocate the Pi's LEDs to be visible from the front/keyboard area (Most likely re-wire the keyboard's LED to function as the Pi's power LED, and then relocate the SD card LED right next to it).
    5. Install an RGB/Component-out hat onto the Pi and make those accessible in the back as well. That way you could play your games in beautiful RGB on RGB CRT monitors/TVs/PVMs/BVMs. Best possible signal for those old monitors.
    6. Add a hard drive with even more games. You could put every game for every system the Pi can run at proper speeds on there that way.
    There's probably other stuff I haven't thought of yet. I think I might have to build something like this myself. I've seen videos like these in the past, but this one has really got my juices flowing. I mean, there's a chance I'll win this system (a very small chance, judging by the amount of entries so far), but man, yeah. Hrm. Actually, for more power and more systems, it might just be better to forget the Pi and put an actual PC motherboard in there. It would also then be able to use RetroArch's Run-Ahead feature to basically remove input lag you normally get with emulators. Yeah. I don't really have the money to do all this at the moment. But, yes. Something like this needs to exist in my life. :D
