I put on makeup every single day because * * * * I * * * * love it. Drinking my coffee very early in the morning--while the house is quiet and everything is moving slowly--and picking my outfit and makeup for the day is my favorite part of the day. BUT if I didn't wear makeup (or high heels) and someone told me I HAD to in order to "look professional", I would simple reply that I'd consider doing it when all the men had started doing it themselves, and after the expectations and policies had been formally added to our employment contracts, along with a stipend to cover the additional cost one would incur in. I bet no one would insist after that.

Exactly. If men can look professional without makeup, so can women. End of story.

i did a six month unpaid intership last year and an older female coworker wanted me out, so she was awful to me. so every morning i got up extra early to do my hair and makeup and picked a nice outfit cause i loved her face of pure disgust and envy when i was there, earlier than her and getting compliments on how good i was looking. so even if she made the day a living hell, i would start with that fuel of _you cant beat my outfit nor my lashes_ .

Have been working from home since March but never heard of cases where they ask women to wear makeup, how crazy is that 😟 I always put makeup before going to work and I still do now but because I like the me time and the creativity of it. Some days it is a no makeup look and some other days it is a smoky eye at 9am, but my choice and my choice only. Lovely video Lisa, thanks for the lighting tips!

  • @courtneycullen6289
    @courtneycullen6289 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

I'm an attorney and have been working from home almost entirely since March (except for work travel or depositions, which I do 3-4 times a month) and I wear more makeup now more consistently than I ever did when I was going into the office. Because it prepares me mentally for the day and the tasks and because I have the ability to take whatever time I want. I'm also quite privileged as a corporate defense lawyer to be able to wear whatever I want. So if its a very dramatic bright eye look or a bold lip or a lovely east asian inspired cheek, I can do it. I just have to watch the bronzer/contour/highlight, because the lighting in my office makes the shadows more pronounced (which is an interesting way to reevaluate and imagine light and shadow). So I rather enjoy this part of lockdown and the creative freedom I have to define my looks. I love a sort of light complexion, simple eye, lots of mascara and velvet ribbon for zoom court, because that's often what I wear with a black suit to court. So wearing the same makeup gives me that confidence, even if I'm really wearing leggings and a cardigan.

I hated law and quit to become a writer, so over the past decade I've had to work from home as a freelancer when I can get paid work, and regardless of any meetings with clients, I like getting up & making my bed, having a coffee & healthy breakfast, getting dressed & putting on makeup every morning so I feel professional and productive. Otherwise I just feel gross and if I do have a last minute meeting come up, I'm ready.

Depends on the job. If it's a customer-interaction situation (e.g. receptionist, air stewardess, etc.) or one where you are filmed (e.g. actress, model, etc.) then your appearance would be extremely important. For jobs involving cleanliness (chef, surgeon, etc.), makeup would be inappropriate.

Lisa, I am a medical doctor. A very frumpy looking one up until a year ago. I work at an outpatient clinic. One day my medical supervisor asked me to come to his office and told me he expected me to wear dresses to work and to try and look "a little better". I guess being nice, listening to patients, trying to take care of my patients the best way possible and brightening up the place with a smile and kind words for everyone (though wearing pants and flat shoes and comfortable shirts) wasn't enough. Here I am, one year later, still loving my job, still being the best medic I can, while in high heels and flattering dresses (hidden by a lab coat). Why should the dresses be important, especially when I have lives and health issues under my care?

    • @mazzaf7575

Depending on what look and colors I choose, that's how I pick what Im going to wear. When in doubt, I wear black and white and a bright lip. All Summer Ive been doing the 5 minute make up look w/ no liner either a pale pink or a coral lip. Now that Fall is on our doorstep I've been adding liner and a brighter coral or red lip for fun. I've been helping one of my dear friends find the 'perfect red' for her. Two of my neighbors asked me to color their hair and do their make up for Zoom meetings they were having, in a panic. I'm lucky as an elementary school teacher my principal hasn't used Zoom yet. Thank goodness!

I wear makeup every day, whether I’m in the office (I am in an industry that returned to work in phase 1, but we still work, when possible, from home) or not. And I get off hand comments sometimes about wearing makeup - always from women.
But I enjoy it. It makes me feel put together and, as Lisa mentioned, it’s a form of prep before the day. I don’t judge anyone for not wearing it, so please stop judging me for wearing it. (Tinted moisturizer, mascara, blush and lipstick or gloss is all I wear - I’m not caking layers on! But even if I did, shouldn’t it be my choice?). That’s what I’d like to say to those commenters 😊😉❤️

I was having the problems Lisa described in the video with my soap brow product. Sometimes my brows had little flakes of white and felt a bit crunchy. I used Lisa’s tip of spraying the product lightly with water this morning and it has worked a treat! I will be doing this from now on. So simple, but I would never have thought of it.
Also laughing at the cats giving off in the background. I have 4 cats and automatically took one of my earbuds out for a split second to see who was fighting before I caught myself on. Never a dull moment in multi-cat households. Hoping for another Ted Talk soon :)

I love wearing makeup, and your video tutorials Lisa, have been a God's sent!!
As a journalist/ media analyst, ive been doing most of my work via zoom/ Skype etc .
The pressure to look even better is enormous . I haven't been asked, to alter my makeup regime , but it's a given. Makeup,/hair, - and overal image is so important.
Sometimes I need to interview/ , or make commentaries at short, notice .
    But given,
that I have never missed any of your excellent tutorials, I have learnt soooo much.!!! 💕
I somehow manage to apply my make up, do my hair,
    quickly and efficiently (I hope)
The fact that you care, - ask questions, on how we cope in different circumstances/, situations,
makes you, an even more, special and a well loved individual.
I believe many would agree with me.
Ps I love your home decor.
It's beautiful. Keep safe Lisa .💖

i asked my college students about their feelings towards teaching digitally and surprisingly a huge discussion about make up broke loose, some really enjoy not having to wear any, some do it like you said as a ritual to feel good and ready, some feel the need to wear more because they feel more vulnarable at home (or maybe because their lighting is just bad...) I think this is a really usefull discussion, maybe this new situation raises again new possibilities to learn about self love and taking conscious decisions about your body, I love that you bring it up!

Lisa, you are the most positive, calming presence as always! ( I met you at a meet & greet, and you were just as welcoming.) As far as makeup goes, I work in fashion and for my team, makeup is non existent. Top priority in terms of visuals are 1. background 2. hair. None of us really wear makeup anymore, and we only dress up our top half for important meetings with execs.

This was very helpful! Thank you. I was a little bit worried about the cats fighting but seeing the one happily ensconced in that comfy chair eased my concerns. Also, electric guitars! Neat!
I’m a musician in a duet with my husband and, after thirty years of happy touring, we have moved all our performances online. I am NOT a fan of being photographed or filmed but it's our business so I'm adjusting. I had been wearing makeup for gigs prior to this, but nothing very major- some shadow, mascara, colored lip gloss and that’s about it. But video… well, I saw the first takes and thought, that will never do! So I’ve been devouring TH-cam tutorials and learning all sorts of new skills.
What a learning curve! :D I kind of wish I'd worked on this when I was a kid like most of my female friends but it was just never even in my thoughts. Anyway, I've been really enjoying the process of learning, and videos like yours have helped me tremendously. I just watched your "happy lips" demo and I'm going to be implementing your suggestions tomorrow for sure. :)

Me: Of course! *applies a little eyeliner, mascara, primer and a dusting of powder.*
      Husband: How do I look?
      Me: You look beautiful!
      Husband: It IS fun!
Husband several days later after playing with makeup: Makeup is HAAAAAAAAAARD!

I had to find a new job during quarantine. Opening cameras weren't required, but I missed the daily routine of doing my makeup and settling myself. So for the past interviews, I did my makeup and tried experimenting with bolder colors, even for my eyes, which I normally don't do. I think I did a fuchsia and green one at the last interview, and it was awesome. It was such an empowering thing to do, and it felt like I was getting back creativity in my daily life. As always, I wore my Lisa lipsticks

I wear makeup even on days I am not in the office or don’t have any meetings because that is how I like to get my day started. Love the look 💖💖💖. I agree with you that we have the choice to use makeup as a tool, and to be careful as it can become a crutch. Use makeup to enhance the beauty that you already own, like your smile or your eyes or don't wear any at all. It's a choice to wear makeup, don't allow anyone to pressure you... I enjoy these quick, easy looks. Thank you for creating and sharing this content 😘.

I’ve been asked to do something with my hair. My hair is coarse and curly and thick and seriously unruly. For my job, it was best just either do some sort of messy bun or a gel stiff French braid. The first words out of my mouth were “do you think I WANT my hair to look like this?” I’ve gone through all the trends, colors, perms, straightening, short, long. My best options were what I was doing. Or shaved. And I wasn’t shaving.
Anytime I’ve had any style comments made, either upscaling the clothing or a verbal makeup dig made by anyone in a professional sense, I always say, when it’s provided as part of my paycheck, I will. Otherwise, my kids get groceries before I get mascara.

I found exactly what you said the natural light on my left from window made me look worse.. Got a ring light with different lighting and as you say the make up and lighting help enhance so I don’t look ghastly. Thanks for this video. I’ve had to experiment, not all make up looks great and professional on camera. A light-ish touch is best. I LOVE make up, love getting ready at home.

At the time I am not working but when I did, I was told to wear “face makeup” since I would wear mascara and sometimes a thin eyeliner. I have very sensitive skin, prone to break outs, and if I wear foundation - even a light layer - for 3 straight days, my skin gets upset and sure reflects it. Keep in mind, I have always taken care of my skin for that same reason and tried new products that have and not worked. Right now the weather is starting to change and we have crazy wind with dust and my allergies are crazy (even while wearing a mask and avoiding going outside) to where I cannot even wear eye makeup since they get watery and itchy. But all the power to the women who do or do not wear makeup! 💪 It’s our choice to do what makes us feel beautiful, let’s empower one another! ❤️

I put makeup on before early morning calls to help feel and look more awake (most of my colleagues are in the UK so it's mid afternoon for them) and the go-to is always blush and mascara, and a touch of shading on the eyelids/sockets. A quick brush of color gel in the brows too to frame the face! It takes 5 mins and I feel ready for the day. A nice pair of earrings also goes a long way to make me feel put together on work calls, and they can be a way to have fun and express a mood too. :-) Haven't felt bothered to do hair though lol so it goes in a ponytail if it's particularly unruly!
