I've worked bartending on and off for years and the reason why the salaries are listed as so low is because 90% of bartenders do not report their tips either at all or they report a very inaccurate low ball amount to pay less taxes. I would say whatever the listed salary is on average add an extra 10k per year. In nyc expect to make around 30-50k a year minimum as long as you work fri and sat shifts of course this amount increases significantly if you work clubs and/or are a pretty female. speaking from my personal experience.
SURPRISE FRIDAY RELEASE! Can you really make $100K as a bartender? In this episode we look at national averages for how much bartenders make in salary, including specific markets like NYC and Las Vegas. Then we break down how much you need to earn per shift
Well, 20-30K was what I was expecting anyways, Bartending for whatever reason has always been something I feel very passionate about so I feel just being able to have the job is enough to satisfy a simple lifestyle.
@@TheBestBartender My restaurant bar is in a small blue collar city of about 10,000 and my best average about $300 (top shifts $600, worst $150). The main reason is everyone tips well because they are regulars and not transient customers who know they will never see you again. A secondary reason is the standards are lower than NYC or Vegas so a quality bartender gets recognized.

I am a deckhand on a local cruise line and they are training me for the bar, too. I am trying to get extra knowledge. I really like to know what I'm doing.
Love your videos! You couldn't be more on point! I've been bartending for 3 years now and I average about 150-200 on a regular night but can go up 3-400 depending on staff and or special event.
I am really happy you started making videos again. You were one of the original videos I learned a lot from a couple years ago that helped me excel when I was learning to work in a bar... Now that I have been in the game, it is chill to watch your new content! Cheers
I luckily work at one of the busiest restaurants in the country and make well over 100… day shifts 200-600. Night shifts at least 400 most often closer to 800 and not uncommon to make a stack. But I perfected my craft for a decade and it is incredibly difficult to get behind the bar at my restaurant….
Wait ..20K? Really? Well, I work full time (6 shifts) in Connecticut, and I bring home approx $800-900 average after taxes. On a slow week I'll make $700.
I must be spoiled then? I make very good money. But then again, I’ve only worked in big cities (Houston, NYC, Philly). I don’t work more than 3 shifts a week and life is great. Shit, I used to work 2 brunch shifts a week at a high end jazz soul food lounge and cleared 4 figures on average. I truly feel that making tons of money depends on your personality. I have regulars that have followed me for years.
I have been a bartender for over 20 years. I live in Southern California and work at a resort part time making $45,000 a year that includes my hourly. I was financial able buy a property 17 years in San Clemente and live a great life thanks to the trade. Truly grateful!
I just turned 18 and bartending sounds amazing to me I live in Southern California as well specifically The Valley next to LA what do you recommend for starting because I really want to pursue this
You guys glossed over stadium or event bartending. I had 3 gigs and my Career Job that ended at 4pm each day. I had one employer willing to flex on my hours and the bar gig had a great friend who set up everything for me when I got in. Concerts, NHL, NFL " 5-7 hundred per game " then shift to full concert venue 20 plus gigs per year - It can be done. Best gigs are NHL's or NBA - 50 to 70 gigs a year 300.00 per gig.
Thank you for this one. It is important to set realistic expectations. I do it as supplemental income. I love the job and my customers. I am not making a mint but the extra scratch helps.
Vibe With Vic: Hi, I'm very curious, as I'm becoming interested in the bartending arts myself: It's awesome that you set your goals high, but what steps do you take to pursue them in action? Personally, I recently took a course to get my TABC, the certification for becoming a bartender in Texas. However, this channel's videos make it seem like I'll have to put in a little more effort to just to get the job, so I'm trying to really think my plan through...
Hospitality in general varies so much. I work at an olive garden in a relatively small town. Some nights are trash and I barely make 100 bucks. Some nights are great and I clear over 300. Sometimes that happens in the same weekend. NYC and other touristy cities are where it's at
I think $20k a year is based on restaurant bartenders income. Other bartenders usually make $30k or more a year depending on if you’re full or part time and the bar you work at.
yeah no offense but stay away from college anything if you're trying to make money from bartending. anything under 100 in tips is very low for a night and it all makes sense because college kids generally tip like shit
I've got 18 years in. Very accurate stuff here. Run the math. If you make 20% in tips off of your sales which is what the avg person will do (18% male/22% female) then you need to consistently hit $2,000 in sales every single shift on average. Most places will limit you in one way or another. If the sales are that high consistently then they will open additional bar stations to dilute the sales or you will have to compete against other people wanting to work. Extremely difficult to make happen on a consistent basis unless you are in a high end hotel with a good shift base or have the ability to rotate through the hottest night clubs.
I was surprised when u said 90 % of bartenders make 20 k lol I made 43 k as a barback at the boathouse in Disney spring #6 grossing restaurant in America. Owne by Gibbsons from Chicago. I do gotta say I was In a lot of good situations that they needed me i was nown as the yes guy even on my days off i would pick up a shift
Yep, those are the numbers I dug up, pretty low but it's important for people to realize this isn't a career you get into because you want get rich. Your spot is an exception, not the rule. That, and being willing to work as much as you can, again rare! You're one of those extremely valuable employees, I'd keep you around any way I could. Thanks for sharing, Cheers!
I make about $10k (ten) in a year in a top bar (4*10 hours per week), with ten years of experience and wide knowlegde of cocktails / spirits. this 10k equals my final payment since we do not get the tip from the owner. However the average salary for a bartender is about $7k in my country.

i'm trying to be independent bartending is extremely difficult in my first month. My coworkers are negative and im worried about my future i wonder if i'll be able to survive in the world. I'm getting depressed because I'm not sure if ill be able to live a full life with that and personal training :/
As soon as I done my bartending classes and get my bartending certificate ' I will go search for jobs only in high value clubs and bars ,i will go look in center city Philadelphia because it be booming there , if it's in the Philadelphia area the best is center city to bartend ! Or New York city ,and i will travel and relocate for the money i will love to travel to Vegas as well I would bartend there too . Not only for the money but to make friends too and socialize whit people because my lifestyle its Pretty boring so bartending is like a way for me to socialize more whit the world
this is interesting because in nyc making 250-300 a night is considered a bad night. I average about 400 as a starting bartender. not to mention base pay of $18/hr so if i just report my base pay it's 34,000 a year no one ever reports their tips lol.
Yeah NYC has long been known as one of, if not THEE best market in the world to be a professional bartender. And I agree that tip claiming is vague at best in most establishments ;)
what kind of place did you work for, if you dont mind myy asking? im a bartender in los angeles. worked at the roosevelt hotel in hollywood for 4 years and was making $15 an hour plus an average of 250 a night. ive met a few people who have said theyve made $400 a night average but never got the names of the places they worked for. $400 a night was a good night at the Roosevelt, where i bartended. it wasnt rare. sometimes 2 to 3 times a week. but i want to find one of those $400 places. i have theories. my guess is like an upscale sushi restaurant that has entrees that cost 50 dollars on average and their cocktails are 20 dollars average. and they probably autograt. and you probably wear a black tie or a pressed white shirt. and big name people come to your establishment on a regular basis. thats my guess.
Most people think Vegas, but pound for pound ( or... bar for bar) NYC has to be in the top three markets in the US if not #1. I had a few friends that have done very well out there. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much for putting this into perspective for me! I still would love to become a bartender because the idea of it would be cool and I could make a lot of friends!
I'm interested in doing bartending as a side gig and I am neither young nor beautiful. Would I be wasting my time trying to do this or is it feasible for someone like me to do this job?
It's been my biggest dream to become a bartender, I'm 21 and I've been finally trying so hard to get into it but I feel like nobody is taking me seriously because i'm petite, I genuinely look 15 and sound 12, I guess it would be weird to get served alcohol by what looks like a little girl. I started volunteering at this place that has a bar, got trained and everything, I know a TON of stuff about alcohol as I've researched and read a lot simply because it's interesting to me. I'm super social and bubbly , I love love love people and interacting with them! Anyway, my first bar shift ever as a volunteer, I'm working with this 60+ year old man, it's already weird, it looks like he's working with his grand daughter or something 😑 But we talk about the bar and he asks me how come I wanna volunteer at the bar, and then he asks me if I just finished school. I sigh, hahahaa. Anyway, when customers come, nobody ever comes to me first, they all go to the old man to be served and they'll even all cue up on his side in order to be served by him while my side is totally empty. I feel a little defeated, I'm 21, I'm not gonna change in appearance anytime soon, I'm done growing basically, is bartending a hopeless dream for me because of this? Will employers not want to hire me because I look so damn young? Or is it all in my head and this stuff doesn't matter at all?
I know you commented 6 months ago and have probably gotten over the issue now, but like they said, own the bar, stand tall as you can and be confident. I’m also 21 now and would love to be a bartender, I’m also a young looking guy but if I can learn my stuff then I believe I’ll do great and you can too!
I averaged 3k sale sa night, 10% low end on tips is $300. Plus wage of $18 with ot after 8 or 40hours working 10h shifts i made 2500 a week average. Or about 130k I claimed all of it to buy a house
All these Americans talking about how they get so many tips in city bars and just bars in general over there and theres me in the UK thinking £40 on a Saturday night is good. Mid week shifts you can not get anything at all
Yeah, but that was my whole point with this video, most bartenders in the states don't make a very good living. Some outliers definitely do, but for the most part we are living in the low income bracket. You're on par with most average bars for a day shift with those numbers :)
Hmmm you would be right about making only 100 a shift if they are working at a bar that’s not that busy lol If you are working in a casino or at a busy bar in a vacation seasonal city then we are making way more a shift ! Plus you have to have a great following as well ! 😎
I've heard a lot of bad things about cruise ships. Don't they make you sign like a year long contract? I'd do it if I was fresh outta school or something, but not now. I'm more interested in going somewhere I can surf for a few months
It's true, usually they have 8 months onboard contracts. Usually cruise lines signs 2 years contracts, depending on which one you go you have more or less off-board months.
I dunno what this guys talking about. He must have had some shitty jobs….if you’re only making 100$ a shift bartending then you’re working at the wrong bar. Period. Go somewhere else. You should be getting 350 a shift AT LEAST on the weekends, and about 150-250 during the week. You should avg about $200-250 a shift, or higher if you’re good at it and you have a good bar job. If you’re willing to work till 2 am or so then you SHOULD be looking at about 500-600 a shift on the weekends. This is assuming you’re a good bartender though, not all bartenders can handle how busy and quick you have to be to get that kinda money.
@@braccin well come to think of it, you’re probably right. There are a lot of shitty bartending jobs out there. A lot of them…But there’s a lot of good ones too. There’s a lot of places that just hire anyone off the street to work behind the bar without even having serving experience. Probably not the kinda places where you’re gonna make good money. I just think if you’ve got experience and you know you’re good at your job you should expect to get paid accordingly. We work really hard for our money. Long shifts with no lunch breaks, no PTO (no sick days…), no benefits, nothing. If you’re not making at least $30/hr then I don’t think it’s even worth it to do this kind of work.
@@elliot1405 Is it really hard when u start my biggest Thing is if idk a drink they ordered etc just anxious seems way too good to be true YK what I mean?
@@braccin you learn all the drinks and stuff just by doing it every day. The hard part is keeping up with how many of them you have to make and how many people there are who want their drinks “RIGHT NOW!!!” It’s all about speed and being able to maintain a super fast pace for hours on end with no breaks. My wife’s a bartender too, and she always says “be like a duck on water. On the surface the duck looks calm and relaxed like he’s just enjoying the world around him, but under the water his feet are kicking a million miles an hour”. She always tells me to “be the duck” when I’m bartending lol 🦆
Yes I plan on taking it on full time if not 6 days a week, gna take the elite bartending course and what should I do right after (step by step if possible) do I just apply for bartending positions or get bar back first or a server and work my way into it & okay thanks for the dynamics on the amount I should be making and how exactly should I choose to what spot I apply to? Or would it just be better to become a bartender at any local pub or a non busy busy one and get at least 6 months down before applying elsewhere just to say u have bar experience?
Id say it really depends, is It just a hotel with a bar lobby area? Or is it a hotel & resort, I work at a hotel and resort and bartenders here make about 150-250 a night. I couldn't imagine a hotel with a lobby bar making much at all unless an event nearby has came in and lots of clientele are staying at the hotel for the period of time
Tigrex Gaming my friend used to work as a bartender at the Hyatt here where I live and he worked the nights and weekends and pulled in $2000 -$2500 per weekend
So, you're pulling close to $240K/year... as a bartender? That's awesome jaymi, but you also must realize you are at the extreme upper end of the $$ spectrum. Do you think most bartenders across the country, or world, are pulling $1000 a shift? I've done the research, and the time in a busy market; most are not anywhere near that, outside of a select few places in specific super heated areas. As depressing as it may seem to you, these are the averages for our industry. But it's good for people to hear of the high dollar successes that are possible in this job, so thank you for sharing :)

I know plenty of bartenders that make $300 a night plus whatever they get paid an hour. I doubt any of it gets reported.
no one reports shiit
I am really happy you started making videos again. You were one of the original videos I learned a lot from a couple years ago that helped me excel when I was learning to work in a bar... Now that I have been in the game, it is chill to watch your new content! Cheers
Same here!
Hey brother where do u work in Connecticut
I must be spoiled then? I make very good money. But then again, I’ve only worked in big cities (Houston, NYC, Philly). I don’t work more than 3 shifts a week and life is great. Shit, I used to work 2 brunch shifts a week at a high end jazz soul food lounge and cleared 4 figures on average. I truly feel that making tons of money depends on your personality. I have regulars that have followed me for years.
one of the female bartenders at las vegas puts her tips inside her bra cup. at the endof the night she looks like dolly parton
That's... a new thing I learned today.
That's hilarious i love it
I have been a bartender for over 20 years.
Epic! Thanks for sharing this 🍻
Thank you for this one. It is important to set realistic expectations. I do it as supplemental income. I love the job and my customers. I am not making a mint but the extra scratch helps.
you famous
Realistic expectations. Nahhhhh. I’m the bartender that’s making a killing because I set my goals high
Vibe With Vic: Hi, I'm very curious, as I'm becoming interested in the bartending arts myself:
It's awesome that you set your goals high, but what steps do you take to pursue them in action?
Personally, I recently took a course to get my TABC, the certification for becoming a bartender in Texas. However, this channel's videos make it seem like I'll have to put in a little more effort to just to get the job, so I'm trying to really think my plan through...
Hospitality in general varies so much. I work at an olive garden in a relatively small town. Some nights are trash and I barely make 100 bucks. Some nights are great and I clear over 300. Sometimes that happens in the same weekend. NYC and other touristy cities are where it's at
I think you're experience reflects around the general average in this industry, some ups, some downs. Thanks for sharing 🍻
I know plenty of young girls who make amazing money- what you said rings true and goes to show take advantage of something while you still have it
I uprooted and moved to vegas. I make a solid 50k, 4 days a week.
Steve Cusimano was it difficult to land a job when you arrived ?
I averaged about $150 a shift working 5 shifts a week roughly 30 hours a week
I work 8 shifts a week on average I make 270 a shift I work hard and I’m always tired but I’m 28 and going hard till I can’t then buying my own bar
150 weeknights, 300+ on the weekend nights
in the San Francisco Bay Area
I hate to break it to you but my bartenders make 75k to 110k per year. 28 hours per week. You’re at the wrong place.
I make an average 150 a night, but have reached into the 300's many times
I think $20k a year is based on restaurant bartenders income. Other bartenders usually make $30k or more a year depending on if you’re full or part time and the bar you work at.
I bartend at college football games/basketball and make about 90-150 for a 5-6 hour shift... thinking about getting into the club scene
yeah no offense but stay away from college anything if you're trying to make money from bartending. anything under 100 in tips is very low for a night and it all makes sense because college kids generally tip like shit
I want to date you
I've got 18 years in.
I do fall in that category of young and beautiful, and I live in Vegas, all I gotta do now is learn to bartend
Haha, get after it! Everything you would need is here on this channel ;)
Great video! Thanks for the breakdown!
I have made more money bartending than any other job I've worked. I'm not going based off on my own salary but lets just say on average you make $200 a day/night. Ive always tried to get 5 days a week. 200x5=1000. $1000 a week. 1000x4=4000. $4000 a month. Now if you have good people skills and know how to hustle you can and will make alot more. One thing I was taught and understood early on is build up your customer/regular base. Just because your a male bartender doesn't mean you can't have a good following. That will make you ALOT more money
If you work at one bar five nights a week, will they care if you work at another one the other two nights?
Overall I do agree with most of the points within the video....Well said.
How much working at a football stadium? And do bartenders only get paid by tips or tips and paycheck?
Tips and paycheck
i'm trying to be independent bartending is extremely difficult in my first month. My coworkers are negative and im worried about my future i wonder if i'll be able to survive in the world. I'm getting depressed because I'm not sure if ill be able to live a full life with that and personal training :/
whats my options to survive once im old and ugly:( prolly just gonna kms
Jillian Lurie fuck what your coworkers say man. you can do it. remember that most ppl also went through what you did to get to where they wanted.
Jillian Lurie and don’t worry about once you’re old. by that time, you’ll have had something worked out trust me.
@@matthewk1 And once your old just make sure you look aged and wise. Those are the best looking bartenders🤷♂️
Not true about vegas bartenders .. I’m a vegas bartender & we are union @ $20 an hour without tips alone is almost 40k a year
In NYC, we make about $400/shift. I think that this depends upon where one lived. Folks make a living here from bartending.
Most people think Vegas, but pound for pound ( or... bar for bar) NYC has to be in the top three markets in the US if not #1. I had a few friends that have done very well out there. Thanks for sharing!
@@BartendingPro NP. :)) Thanks for the videos. I need all the assistance I can get.
What's a good area to bartend in the city?
I make $400 a night in pdx plus $15 an hour have some regularly that always tip $100-$200
Do you love making drinks and do you make good drinks? A good personality is a bonus. That's the question.
Tnx bro for info. I wish I knew that info when I was in my 20s🤣
You gotta stand behind the bar like you own it. Be outgoing and personable, but let others know you are serious and can handle being a bartender.
thx for the tips, will keep all of that in mind on my next shift and see how it goes :)
TLayla let me know
If you end up getting the job ! 👍🏼
I learned to do tricks and bottle flips that’s how I got my first one.
I know you commented 6 months ago and have probably gotten over the issue now, but like they said, own the bar, stand tall as you can and be confident. I’m also 21 now and would love to be a bartender, I’m also a young looking guy but if I can learn my stuff then I believe I’ll do great and you can too!
Go where the retired old people are at. Country clubs, large retirement communities. Places like that
What about airport bartending?
Great option!
I averaged 3k sale sa night, 10% low end on tips is $300. Plus wage of $18 with ot after 8 or 40hours working 10h shifts i made 2500 a week average. Or about 130k I claimed all of it to buy a house
Спасибо за видео. Thank you for this video.
I’m actually considering getting a bartender license
My mom is a bartender and she works in Manhattan so she wins 5x
some make a little, most make less.
Any tips on bartending while traveling?
HapaHarley Work on cruise ships. Best of both worlds
I've heard a lot of bad things about cruise ships. Don't they make you sign like a year long contract? I'd do it if I was fresh outta school or something, but not now. I'm more interested in going somewhere I can surf for a few months
If you speak and read local languages and you can bar tend anywhere.
It's true, usually they have 8 months onboard contracts. Usually cruise lines signs 2 years contracts, depending on which one you go you have more or less off-board months.
So people dont report their tips?
Dont u have to
Yea 😉
People don’t realize how much more “cash” is worth….
Cruise bartenders make a lot...
Wrong
These videos were 6 years ago maybe it’s different now
@@braccin well come to think of it, you’re probably right.
How much hotel bartender make.
I make $120,000 a year bartending. None of this Information was accurate.
Lol. Where at?
where do you work?
Says the outlier. Did you not read alllllllllll the other comments and yet bc of your one you call bs on allllll the rest. Hmmm sounds like b
400 to anout 1500 plus cash
Can you be a vegan and bartend?
Wilt Chamberlain ...I mean...you aren’t drinking it
Interesting. I'm a Grubhub/Doordash driver, and I've been doing $300 a day.
Depends on how you work and how you behave 😉
I feel like all of the comments prove this video wrong... lol
lol he has no idea what hes talking about. i almost make 1000 a shift. i also work 12 hours a day 5 times a week
But it's good for people to hear of the high dollar successes that are possible in this job, so thank you for sharing :)
what kind of place do you work for? that sounds amazing.
No you dont
I want to be a bartender for some extra cash
$20000 a year “ON PAPER”
Exactly 😎

If you work at one bar five nights a week, will they care if you work at another one the other two nights?
