    Here I'm again, after 13 years. I'm a music student in a university here in Brazil, and this video is one of my biggest introductions to a different kind of concert music, contemporary, but with deep roots in our synphonic tradition. After talking with a spalla of one of the biggest orchestras here in Brazil, which played some of Mason Bates compositions, I had to listen to this once again. I got a little emotional, I must say. Seeing how the internet and the world has changed in those 13 years, and how this same evolution of internet gave us so much possibnilities to know about the great tradition of composers and all the new great musiciains and inventors of music that we have in our times, gave me so much energy to keep pursuing my very need of creating music for our times. This is one of the best things that happened to our contemporary music.

    We can listen to Mozart forever or we can expand the concept of the symphony into the next century.
    I was trained as a classical musician but really wasn't quite good enough to make a reasonable living at it, so I went Harvard Law School and turned out to be a successful lawyer who could afford to attend classical performances.
    This piece is an amazing maturing of the classical orchestra into the modern world. The traditional instrumentation is fully present and played in traditional style AND it is joined to a modern palette of sound and texture not normally associated with the formal music hall.
    The joining of horse hair and electrons seems seamless, completely complimentary, and totally additive (no! multiplicative) of the resources of the ensemble!
    On the basis of this presentation, I shall attend the Bates opera, The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, at Santa Fe this summer!!

      @1MRBASSMAN 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is not a "maturing of the classical orchestra into the modern world." This is the modern orchestra pandering to modern tastes for the simplest common denominator. It is a regression from the complex harmonies and developmental techniques of Wagner, Mahler and Schoenberg, to the simplistic rock structures that enthrall 10 year olds. And not all the finely turned phrases in the world can hide that fact.

    • @DarrinNewhardt
      @DarrinNewhardt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@1MRBASSMAN absolutely untrue!
      As a classically trained composer myself, I hear all the same poly rhythmic ideas of Wagner and the choral harmonies of a Mahler and on top of that, Bates has found a way to make it sound fresh by keeping it relatively Diatonic. There's as much brilliance her as Wagner or Mahler. Grant it, Wagner wrote music that was very different then what others of his time were writing but Mahler didn't. He took the classical styling of his time and crafted it as his own. That's what Bates is doing here. Yes it has a rock flavor but through a highly sophisticated and educated lens. I would gladly take a 10 year old to hear this if it opened them to the joys of orchestral music.
      I bet you don't like Hamilton either do you?

    The guzheng sounds totally out of this world like a nebula answering the beacon of the mothership. It sounds like silk weaving through space, flowing, turning, alive and beautiful. I play Chinese orchestra but have never heard the guzheng like that. Absolutely in love and in awe.

    If Bates wanted an instrument that sounded like an orchestra instrument he wouldn't have chosen the electric guitar. The player made the electric guitar sound like an electric guitar, and that deserves some credit.

    People keep saying the guitar was "too much" or "too extraneous"... that's what Bates tries to do that so many good artists can't. He pushes the limits and boundaries. If you're truly pushing limits it's never gonna land with everyone right away, sometimes it's even a hit and miss. But at least he went for it.

    • @ndf3
      @ndf3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if this vapid shit is "pushing limits" I'll stick to the status quo

    • @justinnaramor6050
      @justinnaramor6050 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ndf3 yeah.... you just don't like it. Pretty obvious considering that comment you wrote. If this was really truely "shit" then no one would listen to it. Same applys to mainstream popular music. If it's truely "shit", as a matter of fact, no one would listen to it. It's like heavy metal music; some people don't like it, and those people might find it strange that other people like it. But there's a group of people in the world that in fact like that sound of screaming and heavy guitar and drum sounds. Just thought I'd point that out.

    • @justinnaramor6050
      @justinnaramor6050 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ndf3 Also, this "pushing boundaries" is in fact what Mason Bates does. Think about it. How often do you hear unconventional instruments/sounds, like a techno beat, in a symphony orchestra? Not that often. So my point is there shouldn't be a limit for what instruments should/shouldn't be used in the orchestra.
      Also, if you're gonna complain that this is "vapid", then chances are you're not gonna like some of Max Richter's music, like his piece called "Sleep" for example. I personally choose to judge the quality of music not based on how technically complex it is, but on the emotion I get from hearing it. I could hear a rather simple song that could be easily recreated by a beginner musician but that song might make me feel quite joyful and excited. Or I could hear a rather simple song that could be easily recreated by a beginner musician but that song could make me feel very relaxed and peaceful, or it might even move me to tears. So I would advise people to look past the fact that a song is simple and ask themselves, "what emotion do I get from hearing this?" or "what emotion might other people get from hearing this?" I won't choose to avoid listening to a song just because it's pretty simple musically. If it gives me positive emotions after hearing it the first time around, then I'll gladdly listen to it again.

Sometimes it didn't but then it just went WAM and it it was like the bad sort of chaos in my hears. @mrfreemusic1 the important thing is that you liked it. Question: how do you know the other soloists are simply "playing a rehearse routine", as you put it. Is it because it seems like they melded with the piece closer? Or maybe you saw them rehearsing their routine and heard all the exact same notes? Also, I'm not saying anyone played badly, it's just that it takes an even higher talent to express yourself improvisationally while still melding with the spirit of a particular piece. 'nough said
