The effect of it was commonplace, as this list demonstrates, but it wasn't until later in the same block here - in Future Sight - that reach emerged as an ability. As such, if it were to lose abilities, like with Snakeform, Ovinize, or the classic Humility, it _would_ be reduced to a 1/1...but it still had *effective* reach, as the capability to block flyers was granted from the outside effect of Penumbra Spider, not from the token's own abilities. If it were made "Humble", and a flyer attacked, it could still intercept it. Same goes for the ol' Marit Lage token that Dark Depths created it simply _was_ "indestructible", it didn't actually have it as a keyword, or even an ability of "This is indestructible" as it used to be handled. Humiliate Marit Lage, they'd still be impervious to Earthquake and Damn(ation) and whatnot. It was _most_ peculiar in hindsight.
I wonder if any top tier player will ever start including rotating pool of niche cards in their side board to get their favorite under appreciated creature type enough points to get a top ten here? I would find that hilarious. Like, its a mono green deck but has this random red card in the sideboard that they can't possibly ever play and no one would play anyway just to mess with these.
I’d assume that most point-scoring events are competitive enough that if you don’t use all 15 sideboard slots for cards that might come in, you’re cutting into your chance of making the top 8.
You ever thought of doing lists of your personal favorite cards based on different themes? Like your favorite zombies or your favorite shamans. This approach would let you shed light on some potentially underrated cards that don't have to conform to the point system.

Chainweb Aracnir was important for the rogue matchup, as it gave you a way to shrink your graveyard while taking care of one of their creatures.
Giant Trap Door Spider doesn't hate on flyers, in fact, it can't interact with them.
