Anastasia will always have a place in my heart. Gorgeous animation and some pretty awesome songs.
And Oliver and Company -while not the best - gave me "Why Should I Worry?" which is worth it. Plus the whole thing was a nice grittier modern change compared to all the other Disney films before it.
It still bugs me that Atlantis and Treasure Planet get no attention.
Miss Moxie Preach, especially on Treasure Planet--I still can't believe it failed at the box office, but I am glad that I got to see it in theaters. I'm sorry my dollars didn't contribute to a profit, but it was worth the money.

Oliver & Company may not be among the strongest animated Disney films in my opinion but it's still good.
I love both Atlantis: The Lost World and Treasure Planet. It's too bad some films don't get enough attention :/ I hope both of these will get their own Worlds in Kingdom Hearts III.

+harrietamidala1691 Treasure Planet failed at the box office because it was super expensive to make. Disney spent $140 million making that film, which is comparable to major live-action blockbusters and more than most animated movies even earn.

I think Don Bluth was one of (if not the only) people at Disney to not patronize the audience and try edgy things for kid's movies. After all, wasn't he the one who said that "Kid's can handle anything dark as long as you attach a happy ending to it!"

Yes, he did for a time. He took part in the animation of the Rescuers and some others. His last film with Disney was some uncredited animation for Fox and the Hound.
Taylor Allen He did and he didn't like the direction they were going at the time.
He gave kids a LOT more credit than Disney did at the time. He understood that kids can handle sadness and heavy themes. And that a lot of kids prefer it. I grew up on Don Bluth movies and to this day I prefer dramatic movies and tear-jerkers.

He sure did not follow the last bit of that formula with All Dogs Go to Heaven.

A lot of people feel like liking Anastasia but god.. Well.. Did you learn it's like historically inaccurate?
Really? I watched it for the first time today (I'm 28) and I found it incredibly simple, the villain is hardy there, the acting seems stiff and only a few of the songs hit. The animation can be wonky at times, too, even though it's great most of the time. Nah, I think there's a lot better animation films.
I like "Anastasia" and "Titan A.E." Do I find the real history of the Russian Revolution more interesting? Yes. But I think it's a decent film all the same. I found "Titan A.E." enjoyable and unique. If you dislike one or both of those films, that's fine. This is just my opinion.
I think Treasure Planet makes a little more sense if it takes place in the Titan A.E world, since Jim and his mother are the only humans we see in the film.
I really enjoyed Titan AE. Sure, a it was a little choppy at times and the characters a little corny but you could definitely feel the struggle of the main hero. The emotion is there.
@@DivinePearl for me Titan AE is interesting and the 2d animation and some of the 3d animation is really good and how they combine them, but towards the end the cg got really bad especially the ending scene of the Earth landscape, the story and characters were a little too cookie cutter and with a few adjustments could of been better and I wish the characters and settings were a little more fleshed out
Anastasia and Pocahontas get a lot of criticism for not being historically accurate, but critics just don't get that they're both animated fantasies, not docummentaries. They take place in imaginary universes with talking threes, green demonic magic, talking bats and peace between natives and pioneers.
It's called historical fiction, despised when animated films do it but praised when Shakespeare and other artists do it. So unfair.

my professor worked on rock-a-doodle, and he told us the script was forcibly changed not long before the movie came out- they had to redub animation and completely recut the movie, because the higher ups decided they wanted it to be the little mermaid, when it was originally scripted to be roger rabbit

So that's why critics didn't respond well to don bluth films. Man now I feel even more bad for him and his team, the stupid financiers should not have dumbed down any of bluth's films, you can't out Disney Disney. Honestly he was better off making movies with Steven Spielberg
No wonder it turned out so terrible. Don Bluth was just too used to making dark films that push boundaries. When you ask a man to do something he is not used to. He will probably fail at it. The Disney films were lighter than his films, but they still had a good story behind it. Fun fact. He actually wanted to make a beauty and the beast film, but of course, Disney.

This is gonna sound lame but I cried during Transformers, it's not just Optimus Prime's death but the death but the deaths of so many Gen-1 Transformers, that was a lot of carnage for a kid to take.
I am really surprised no one thinks that the tragic murder of child actress Judith Barsi (orphan from All dogs go to heaven and Ducky from Land before time) had no affect on Don Bluth's psyche. Bluth was even quoted as saying he planned to her voice more characters in later movies. You see a clear down turn from All dogs go to heaven (Barsi's last movie) to Rock-a-Doodle.

I loved Anastasia and still do
What!? Anastasia is one of the most BEAUTIFUL animated movies ever! I freaking love that movie. It is a million times better than The Little Mermaid, I freaking hate Ariel. The story was great, the animation was beautiful, and the songs were fantastic. Rasputin was horrifying and funny, "In the Dark of the Night" is one of the best villain songs ever. I have loved Anastasia since the moment it came out, I still love it and I showed it to the kids I nanny (ages: 12, 9, and twin 7 year olds) and THEY loved it. I thought they did a good job making Bartok cute and funny but not overusing him to the point he takes over and gets annoying.
I never really liked the Secret of Nimh, it was meh for me. Some of my favorite movies as a little kid were Rock-a-Doodle as well as All Dogs Go To Heaven, heck, I still love them. ADGTH still makes me cry. Troll in Central Park was... ick... no thank you. I do love An American Tail though, I actually enjoyed the first sequel, An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, not Don Bluth but I still like it. I love Thumbelina BUT I understand why others may not think it is that great. I also really enjoyed the Pebble and the Penguin but once again understand why others may not like it.

the Movie Anastasia is visual realy good, but a little Dump. The Villian had a cool Song, but is not so carismatic.
Anastasia does not care that shes been tricked, although it was obvious. Rather an open secret. In addition, the story is played down to the death of the Romanovs and spelled out with spells instead of political disinterest. All the monarchy.

I'd say that Disney's best film during their dark age was 'The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh'.
Between the silver age and the renaissance that is easily the best. As much as I love Sleeping Beauty I would actually say that is the best Disney movie from Pinocchio to Beauty and the Beast.

I've always sort of liked "Pebble & The Penguin". While I recognize it as a mediocre film, it's kind of one of those films that I only like because it's so pretty to look at. I've always had somewhat of an allure toward ice/snow landscapes, so to see that drawn so beautifully in an animated film was so breathtaking. Even if the animation itself is sub-par, for some odd reason, I still love looking at it.
"Anastasia" was actually the first Bluth film that I saw as a kid. I remember liking it, but there wasn't that much that I remember about it. It's weird how even as a kid, I vaguely suspected that it was a Disney film, but I knew that in the back of my mind that it wasn't quite Disney. I do like the music in "Anastasia", though. And I think we can all agree that it has one of the best villain songs ("In The Dark of the Night").
I really need to watch "The Land Before Time" again. I watched it once or twice when I was a small child, and I remember vague things about it, but I don't quite recall anything about it because I was so young.
I saw "All Dogs Go To Heaven" only a couple of years ago (I have Nostalgia Chick's review to thank for that). It truly is a beautiful movie that I think does have a lot of spiritual and religious themes to chew on. Lindsay sort of played up the religious aspect of that move in her review as a joke, but I do think that that analysis of the movie still carries some weight. Especially since Don Bluth is a devout Mormon. I should also mention the real-life subtext of the young actress who played the little girl in that film, Judith Barsi, who was killed by her abusive father along with her mother. The film becomes more tragic when you realize that this was her last movie before her tragic death, and it makes her "I Want" song much more tearjerking.
I only saw "The Secret of Nymph" once, but it was a beautiful movie, obviously. I think that I need to watch it again, because it seems like one of those movies that warrants more viewings in order to properly "get it".
I haven't seen "Titan A.E.", but I really want to. I've heard both good and bad things about it, but regardless, from what I've seen it's definitely an interesting film. I would probably love it due to it being a Sci-fi, action-based animated movie. We don't see that very often in the west (closest I've seen being The Incredibles).
I wouldn't count on Don Bluth coming out of retirement anytime soon, but I hope we at least get something like a small project or whatever before he dies. I hope hand-drawn animation will make a comeback in the near future. At least we still have Studio Ghibli.

***** I actually own five of Bluth's films on VHS at my Oregon home--Secret of NIHM, An American Tail (have the sequel too), Anastasia and unfortunately Thumbelina and Troll in Central Park. The weird thing is, I think I actually saw Bluth's bad movies more than I did his good ones. Secret of NIHM confused me when I was younger and An American Tail was just too hard to watch a lot because Feival was separated from his family most of the movie. I think they definitely deserve a re-watch. I still believe Anastasia is a decent movie for a Disney rip-off, but to say Thumbelina and Troll have not aged well (if at all) is an understatement. Why I watched those turkeys more often is a mystery to me. I didn't even know they were that bad until later.

Jason Lasica Just mentioning Judith Barsi is enough to ruin your day. She was also rather short for her age (she was ten with the body stature of a five-year-old), which further adds to how adorable she was. It really is tragic what happened to her.

Okay I personally love Anastasia. The music and the characters are great. Sure Rasputin isn't the best villain and the story is wildly historically inaccurate and kind of cliched but so are many Disney films that people hail as amazing. And I'm not sure what they meant that Anastasia came out at the "wrong time" because "even Disney didn't want to be Disney at that time". Ummm Anastasia came out in 1997. That's only 3 years after The Lion King, two years after Pocahontas, and the year before Mulan which are all very "Disney-style" Disney films (especially the latter two).
The Rapustin stuff is fun but the scene where Anastasia is meeting her grandmother and they finally realize their connection is one of the most emotional and beautiful scenes I have ever seen in an animated movie. And the song "Once Upon A December" is a beautiful song. I love Anastasia.

'Anastasia' is great. I much prefer it to a lot of Disney movies. Also the villain from 'The Princess and the Frog' is very similar to 'Anastasia's villain.

It's emotional contrast. Humans experience everything through contrast, even right down to the way our brains perceive color. Ergo, if you really want people to feel the happy ending, you have to make them feel how bad it can get on the other end. People will only feel as happy at the end as you made them feel sad in the middle.

Worth a watch - it's as good as an average Disney movie. The songs are almost on another level though
by no means is it bad to like or dislike what you watch. as these guys have noted on several occasions, it matters how you explain why, to offer a different point of view about something for consideration upon a next viewing, to share your opinions and compare/contrast with others. even though Anastasia does have problems, it doesn't hold it back from being good depending on who you ask.

*The Secret Of Nimh*, *An American Tail* & *The Land Before Time* - Classic films that still hold up wonderfully well to this day. All three films are completely timeless. Go see them if you haven't.
*All Dogs Go To Heaven* - A really good movie with likeable characters, a solid amount of surreal creativity and surprisingly great sentimentality. I would definitely recommend it.
*Rock-A-Doodle*, *Thumbelina*, *A Troll In Central Park* & *The Pebble & The Penguin* - In all honesty, I don't remember a single thing about the four. They were so forgettable. Like whenever I see the NC reviews of those films, I'm always like *Wait, did that happen*, *Wait, who's that* or *Wait, Dom is in this*. I wouldn't recommend any of them.
*Anastasia* - Finally, a good Don Bluth movie. Good characters, great songs, pretty animation and an interesting storyline. I would really recommend it.
*Bartok The Magnificent* - It was shockingly fun and entertaining. From a DVD cover, it just looked like a dumb direct to video film like many others but looks can be deceiving. Recommend it, I would.
*Titan A.E.*- Another good movie. Fun characters, creative premise and really damn good animation. I would highly recommend it.
I actually really love Anastasia, mostly for the music, but also because I grew up with and it has that nostalgia factor.

Don Bluth is a genius!!, he literary makes some of the best movies of all time in my opinion. An American Tail is no doubt my favorite movie of all time, man, what a masterpiece, I usually don't ask for thumbs up, but I don't want to feel alone. Thumbs up if you love An American Tail and agree it's a very amazing movie!

Jay Play You made a great choice of keep loving this movie :) An American Tail is a very amazing and beautiful movie, this movie does not deserve to be forgotten at all! This movie deserves a lot a lot of love and respect from a lot of Don Bluth fans and movie enthusiasts in general. It baffles me how this movie turned into a black sheep of all the 80's Don Bluth films to be honest. It's crazy because I remember when I'm on TH-cam when I was in 8th grade, lot of people in the comment sections talk about An American Tail just as much as The Secret of Nimh believe it or not! I remember An American Tail is such a beloved film from a lot of people. Then all of a sudden, the so called "Don Bluth fans" barely mention about this movie. I remember I said to myself "Where all the An American Tail fans? Am I the only An American Tail fan?"
Someone should get that petition going, or if you go to the school that Bluth teaches at, convince him to go to Spielberg and try one more time. The world needs more Don Bluth.

That movie is truly frightening right in the beginning. I enjoyed the rest but the first part with the air conditioner almost ruined it for me because it was just so traumatic

Land Before Time- Awesome!

Rock-A-Doodle- I only saw one scene and thought it was funny. Pretty much forgot about it afterwards.
Thumbelina- The only Don Bluth film I actually owned (got it from my grandparents). It's on my "Top 11 Films the Nostalgia Critic Should Review"- list.
A Troll In Central Park- Never seen it (Thank God!) and never will, but the Nostalgia Critic episode is one of my favorites.
Pebble and the Penguin- Never seen it, but judging by the Nostalgia Critic episode, it looks mediocre at best.
Anastasia- Watched it with my dad and liked it at the time, but now I pretty much agree with Doug and Rob. At least it's a better historical fantasy than those animated Titanic movies.
Titan A.E.- I liked it.

I really liked "Fievel Goes West." It's not as good as the original, by any means, but I think it's really good in it's own right.
I love how Thumbelina is... not even mentioned (and it was arguably their first attempt to go after Disney--Let me Be Your Wings is even matched animation wise to a Whole New World). Which is definitely still better than Pebble, Troll and probably Rock-a-Doodle.
It's uncanny how much alike those two sound.
First off, I loved The Land Before Time movie. I can still remember that great sadness I felt when seeing Little Foot's mother dying in front of him, and that sense of relief and joy I felt towards the end when the clouds opened up over the Great Valley. It struck so many strings at my heart. Second, I now want to see Nostalgia critic do a parody somehow of eighties animators and producers getting back together, and calling themselves a parody of the A-Team...The 80-Team.

With the idea of a happy ending, it also works for books. There are a lot of children's books which gets really dark before the happy ending. Deltora series, The Unicorn Chronicals, Redwall, The Unicorns of Balinor; all of these have some very dark twisted moments in them that when you really think about them sends a shiver down your spine. But they have a happy ending so kids don't mind how dark it went before that ending.

I am a 100% Disney fanatic. But when someone asks my about my favorite movies, the first to come to mind are Land Before Time and an American Tale. These movies were an even bigger part of my childhood than any Disney. There are pictures and videos of me simply walking around with the Land Before Time case at 1 1/2 years old. It was my first favorite movie, and I'm so happy it holds up. Same with An American Tale. I got into Secret of Nimh a bit later. We didn't own it when I was that young. But still, so gorgeous and so good. I do have to admit, the other title to come to mind is Anastasia. That was my favorite movie when I was seven. But while I still enjoy it today, it's the others that I can still watch over and over again.
The Land Before Time in my opinion is one of the greatest animated movies of all time.

I'm a decade after these guys, being a 90's kid, but Land Before Time and An American Tail were both a huge part of my childhood. I think I even wore the tapes out. As for Anastasia, I loved it when I saw it in high school. It's what got me interested in the history of the Romanov family, and even though I know it's SO wrong historically, I still adore it.
The American Tail sequel is freaking awesome! When I was a kid I actually liked it more than the original :P (I still do! But I do appreciate the original more than I used to..I guess :P)
Both the original An American Tail and An American Tail 2: Fievel Goes West are very wonderful movies, and they're my favorite movies of all time. How can you not really like the original An American Tail? Or that you "guess" you appreciate more. An American Tail is a very awesome movie, if you like the sequel, I don't understand why you would not like the original An American Tail.
Man, you guys were spot on about Land Before Time. Holy shit, even thinking about it gets me halfway towards bawling. I swear, it's my favorite movie that I routinely refuse to re-watch, because I know that the second those credits start rolling my day is DONE. Hell, I don't even need to see the whole movie, the credits alone will get me tearing up something fierce.

Two years ago due to unfortunate events I was completely alone on Christmas. No family or anyone, just me and it was completely overwhelming. I watched The Small One after watching Doug review it on Disneycember and, man, that little film left me in tears. That small but simple story saved me that Christmas and I will never forget it. A few months ago, Bluth came to my local comic convention and I personally went to thank him for making that film
I went to a panel featuring him and he was fascinating to listen to, sharp as a knife even though he's in his late 80s. So glad I got to hear from someone as legendary as him. While I don't have a connection to Anastasia, a lot of people absolutely loved that movie and had a huge impact on how they view art
Maybe it's because these two are guys they just don't connect with a "princess" movie but I think Anastasia is a master piece, it's right up there with Beauty and the Beast for me. The animation is amazing, the songs are so beautiful and memorable, the characters are great, yes even Bartok he's hilarious.. I don't know what's not to love?

God so spot on with the representation of kids in Bluth films. The scene where Little Foot and Cera fight and Little Foot crying angry tears really resonated with me as a kid and how I would fight with my brother. I get chills just thinking about it.
"The Land Before Time" is still to this day my favorite film of all time.
An American Tail is still to this very day my favorite film of all time.

I saw the land before time countless times as a kid and I rediscovered it again a few years ago, and then I watched it again most recently a few weeks ago with my kid sister, and I swear the whole time I was watching I was just sitting there marveling at that gritty animation and how utterly perfect the characters were: like I don't think I've ever seen kids more accurately displayed on film ever, and they were dinosaurs! As opposed to all those sequels where they started to feel like your typical television kid gang like recess.

...I meant that kinda as a joke, but it's true a NC episode of that movie could be interesting.
All Dogs Go To Heaven was one of the earliest films I ever watched and it's still one of my all time favourite films. Can't really say the same for the sequel.
Here are my thoughts on all the Don Bluth films:
Secret of NIMH, Land Before Time, American Tail- All masterpieces. By far the best animated films of the bunch, and the best animated films of the 80's in my opinion.
All Dogs Go to Heaven- The Wall-E of the Don Bluth Films- It's very good, but not as amazing as the absolute best of them.
Rock-A-Doodle- Start of the "bad" Don Bluth films. On it's own, it's mediocre at best. To quote Rob, "It's an Acid Trip."
Thumbelina- Haven't seen it, but I heard it was bad
A Troll in Central Park- The worst of the bunch. Also arguably one of (maybe THE) the worst animated films of the 80's.
Pebble and the Penguin- Actually not as bad as Doug and Rob say it is. It's not good, but it's not terrible. I'll take it over Troll in Central Park and Rock-A-Doodle any day.
Anastasia- It's fine. No classic, but not too bad.
Titan A.E.- Saw it once, I have absolutely no memory of it.

In my opinion, I do agree Don Bluth's best films are An American Tail, The Secret of Nimh, and The Land Before Time. Heck, An American Tail is my favorite movie of all time! And I do agree the 3 best Don Bluth films I also listed are masterpieces. So, Andrew Heaney's opinion isn't irrelevant.

I grew up watching and rewatching Anastasia. I loved it for reasons I couldn't quite articulate back then, its protagonist was an every-woman whose deep love for her family and need to belong somewhere spurs her to travel across Europe with a con-artist and his mate and her dog to find her family. Grate songs, a mate of mine loves Rasputins song, fantastic voices, animation and art only topped by Gibli. Fantastic.
I just found out Don Bluth still alive.
I just rewatched Anastasia for the first time since my childhood. Man, that movie is Gorgeous. It made me very emotional towards the end.
As much as I like Anastasia, I can't help but feel a little heavy-hearted knowing what *really* happened to the Romanovs. Rasputin as an evil warlock was kind of silly.
The guy who voices the dinosaur the critic was going on about (who consoles Littlefoot) Actually played Comission Gordon in the Tim Burton Batman movies :D name was Pat Hingle
The Secret of NIMH is, in my humble opinion, the greatest animated movie ever made. That's all.

lol wtf? All Dogs was amazing. The imagery, the characters, the story and to pull it off through dogs and even including a weird alligator moment that made no sense, it was still so damn good.I really felt the relationship grow between Charlie and Anne-Marie. Other movies try this and never pull it off but somehow Don Bluth made it work

I have a conjecture about why his stuff got worse after "All Dogs"... The murder of one of his stars. I'm absolutely sure that screwed him up a lot. He and Stephen Spielberg, especially since he may have felt a bit guilty about it (I think Spielberg said he did) because they knew SOMETHING was wrong, but they didn't go to the police about it. So, when she died, I think a part of him died with her, and that part was connected to his creativity. It didn't destroy it, but it threw it off enough to be problematic.
Aw man.. You didn't like Fievel Goes West?.. I couldn't, and can't get enough of it still. While I respect what the original did, I have a much better time with the sequel over all. It's more fun, while keeping some emotion in the mix.

Well I'm not sure if Doug or Rob will see this, but Rockadoodle is sort of the Disney does Aladdin version of an ancient Greek myth of Chanticleer (hence his odd name). Which later was adopted into Medieval fables the Cock and the Fox. The in the Greek version Chanticleer was the pet of Zeus and beloved by Apollo, who would wake Apollo to let him know it was time to bring out the sun. The fox who wants to eat Chanticleer tricks Apollo by mimicking Chanticleer's crow and convinces Chanticleer Apollo doesn't need him anymore and Chanticleer allows the fox to eat him. In the Medieval versions both Chanticleer and the Fox were recurring characters to teach young children that things are not always what they seem, and don't always believe what you are told. The Fox become a symbol for the Devil and Chanticleer the innocence of man. So yeah with all that heavy background let's add in Elvis and a singing owl and we have a movie!

The terror/fears we could imagine: the rats in the shadows and That OWL!!! (Oh and the cat and the tractor..etc.)
The absolute sorrow and empathy (losing the medicine, Timothy sick, even Nicodemus and his fate)
The joy (the amulet and the family saved, finding the medicine, even finding friends amongst the rats!)
The humor and laughter you can find
(Jeremy, and evening the children at the end)

I use to love the hand-drawn animated films of Don Bluth, when I was a kid. The Secret of Nihm, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, my all-time guilty pleasure: All Dogs Go to Heaven, Anastasia and Titan A.E. were one of my personal favorites. But, I never got into the video games that were released in the arcades back in the 1980’s.

You want the honest truth? In my opinion, it's the greatest animated film of all time. Not counting Fantasia, as that is an experience, it's the greatest hand drawn film that is 99.9% perfect. Seriously, to find a problem, you would have to dig incredibly deep to nitpick something.
It's an awesome film. It well worth watching several times because you might miss some tin the first couple times you watch it. I love this film. I grew up watching this and Land Before Time.
I don't know if I should be ashamed, but I saw The Land Before Time 4 before the original, and I kinda prefer it. I know Don Bluth's strength is in the quality of the emotional scenes, but I guess as a kid I prefered watching lighter movies. The same goes for the other Land Before Time spinoffs (I wouldn't say sequels, that disrespects the originals) and yeah there are moments from those spinoffs that have remained with me - particularly the songs! "Always there" still makes me cry to this day, and I kinda felt that some of the original emotional depth came back in The Land Before Time 6 with the legend of Saurus Rock and how that was portrayed. Sadly after that I stopped watching them after that but I still have the memories. And I had the Land Before Time singalong on VCR, those were the freaking days man!!! -didn't realise how passionate he was for the series-

I think they don't want rewiew Anastasia because it isen't bad enough, the same with Horton saves a who, Doug don,t think it is a good movie but not bad enough for a rewiew so maybe that's the case with Anastesia.

I met Bluth at an animation expo once. For Anastasia, I don't think he hates it but I know he said he refuses to watch it again because he dislikes some of the animation. The example he gave was the way the mouths were animated by the inbetweeners since they look like they are flopping. After going back to watch it, I can see what he meant.

I might be one of the very few that likes American Tale 2 better. An animated film that was set in the wild west is something you never really saw back then. Now we have Rango and (unfortunately) Home on the Range; but even so, you don't see many westerns in animation. Or at all for that matter. The original movie is fine, but I didn't watch it as often back then so it's less nostalgic for me. The rest of the Bluth films are meh for me. I liked Titan A.E. back in the day, but I admit it doesn't hold up all that well.
There was a certain style of animation I couldn't get into as much. A lot of the times the characters' heads move in a very exaggerated way, even if it's a relatively stoic dialog delivery. They liked to push the mouth shapes to an extreme most of the time, and often it just gets hard to watch because there's no variety in the bigness of the performance. In general that is; there are certainly subtle scenes here and there, particularly in NIMH. But I could never call myself a fanboy of Bluth. He did some good stuff, and then a lot of not good stuff.

Agreed. I even bought the VHS when I saw it being sold for like $0.25 somewhere. It actually holds up better than you'd expect. I don't think Bluth actually had anything to do with it though. It was all Spielberg.

Tareltonlives I know. I would watch the first one and be like "Why is this so dark and gloomy?" It's actually the same way I feel about Game of Thrones today. It's not that it isn't good, it's just so joyless mean I can't watch it.
I watched American Tail, Secret of Nimh, and The Land Before Time so many times when I was a little kid. These movies really shaped what I wanted out of animated films.

One thing I know about the Chanticleer story is that, while Bluth was still working with Disney, a lot of the staff wanted to do a movie based on it. However, they couldn't think of any ways to make it work in the area of story and character design and stuff.
The fact that Don Bluth made Rock-A-Doodle makes me think that he might have been one of the staff members that wanted to see the Chanticleer story put to animation.

An American Tail Fievel Goes West was a good cartoony sequel. Everyone who watched the first movie in the 80's wanted a more light hearted movie and Fievel Goes West does exactly that.
