I'm a 48 year old African american of yoruba descent by way of the slave trade. I just started learning yoruba early last year, and I understand and speak 50%. You can learn at any age, no excuses! Keep it alive

@@MyDiasporaSpeaks thank you. It was extremely difficult at first and I felt like giving up but I was too determined to take back what was stolen from the slave trade. After that it became easier. All I do is listen to Yoruba speaking television shows, cartoons, and radio all day, everyday , which is very helpful. My problem is writing and spelling but I'm happy to get this far. I get help from my neighbor who is Yoruba too.

Kudos to you. I find it quite irritating when people say "oh but my children can't speak Yoruba or so many Nigerian children can't speak Yoruba" as if it's a foreign language one has to go to school to learn and the children are being denied access. It's not rocket science, if you're a Yoruba parent and don't communicate with your children in Yoruba - then you failed on that simple assignment.
Please understand, making every effort not to speak Yoruba to your children is actually lack of self-esteem and appreciation for your heritage and who you are. Well done to this parent, I'm sure your household will be more enriched by this simple habit.
