    So... Basically, people who read the books aren't satisfied with the movie adaptation because it changed some things from the source material? Sounds familiar.

      To be far, it changed A LOT. The only things that remained the same is that there's a flood, there's a boat, and Noah builds it. Differences? Well, there's a mystic snake skin of time, God a sadistic Zeus, Noah is a homicidal maniac, Noah only has ONE grown kid, a teenager son, and a toddler. only ONE woman gets on board. I guess we're supposed to believe that the fate of the mankind rests on one girl getting knocked up. One of the sinners ACTUALLY gets on board. Mathosala has a magic fire sword. And there's...rock, giant thingies? Yeah, this movie is REALLY stupid.

    All religious feelings aside, in the trailer, when Noah says "I'm not alone", you assume he's talking about the fact that God is on his side, which is pretty badass in my opinion. Yet in the movie *SPOILER ALERT*, he's actually referring to giant rock people. That's where I started to check out.

    This is a great film! It takes it's story from several pieces of Jewish literature. Namely The Zohar, the Books of Enoch and sacred Jewish traditions. It has very little to do with the Noah story out of Genesis and that is why most people are confused by it. Before the old testament became the old testament, the story of Noah is known by these earlier writings and books. Thus this film is that story.
    Well made and wonderfully acted and directed. Cheers!

  • @calebcone4330

    Darren Aronofsky is probably the best of today's directors at getting the actors to perform as he desires. Ellen Burnstyn was amazing in Requiem for a Dream, and the Wrestler had a very moving performance by Mickey Rourke. His movies are generally very good, but the acting in every film is certainly the strong point.

    Okay, gonna be honest: I'm actually a very religious person. And you know what? I enjoyed this movie! Yes, it was an adaptation, and no, it does not follow the Bible verbatim. But honestly, I feel like it still presents the spirit of the original account quite well, and I found its portrayal of Noah to be believable - even in the Biblical context.

    • @hunterspride18
      @hunterspride18 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Eric Naylor I'm actually a very religious person as well, and I'm pretty knowledgeable in what the Bible says. So understand where I'm coming from when I call you a fraud, and I mean that in the strongest way possible.
      I saw the movie in theaters and nothing...absolutely NOTHING about that film was true to the Biblical context. The only thing that was true was the fact that there was an Ark and there was The Flood. Not even the context of evil men in the world was correct and the entire thing from start to finish was an absolute joke.
      Hollywood NEEDS to get this straight, if you make a movie off a person's religion (Christianity, Muslim, Atheism, Mormonism) you have to be faithful. Religion is set in an entirely different league from any other subject matter, people base their life off of these texts and therefore get deeply emotional about it.
      Aaronofksy completely subverted the entire message of Noah. In the book, he was a great man, in the movie he's a nature extremist that will murder you for killing a deer for food. In the book, the people where given every chance to come on board but they chose to laugh at Noah, in the movie they wanted to come on board but Noah wouldn't allow them because humanity is contemptible and needs to be extinct (complete reversal of the Biblical message). In the movie Noah tries to murder a baby boy, the character from the book would never do that (seriously the film version is a psychopath). In the book the Earth must be purged because all men where wicked, in the film all men must die because they kill animals for meat; this makes God come off as a monster when in the book God is perfect and benevolent and Noah was his righteous servant. Speaking of a righteous man, in the film Noah decides to go against God because he couldn't morally come to kill the baby, implying that humanity is better than God, in the book it is made clear that man is brutally imperfect and requires the help of something/someone greater than himself to uproot himself from the evils of his actions.
      The director COMPLETELY FLIPPED THE ENTIRE MESSAGE OF NOAH ON IT'S HEAD!
      You're an idiot, and a fraud. Shame on you.

      @Stardweller1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +hunterspride18
      I have neither the time nor the energy nor the inclination to answer every one of your objections, but I will answer the last one: In the film, God never actually commands Noah to kill the baby girls - Noah merely interprets it that way (even a Prophet can make mistakes; it we see it in the Biblical narrative). Later, if you're actually listening, it is suggested - strongly enough, in fact, that I would say that this was the intent) that God chose Noah because He knew Noah would be merciful, and not kill those children. In short, God was the good one all along.

      2) Are trying to put me in my place.

    One thing I found pretty odd was the thing with the Watchers: They are shown in league with Cain's descendents, but shortly after it is said that the humans had betrayed thm, which accordingly was set before the scene in which they are shown in league with the humans

    As a Christian, I thought this film was really really creative and absorbing. I know that some other Christians didn't like this film because the film wasn't literal, and Atheists didn't like it because of its religious context. But in overall, I really liked the aspect that this film focused on Noah's internal conflict on choosing to do what's just or love. Also, I thought this film was really respectful too in terms of how they used the materials from Bible. Aronofsky didn't twist the meanings of the story or present new ideas and portray it as the core idea from the Bible or anything. I think that he rather decided to borrow this story of Noah to express his thoughts on many universal elements and themes such as love, humanity, justice, etc. It might be just me, but this film didn't anger me at all. I thought this movie was fantastic in overall. (Bear with my English, English is still my second language even though I lived in the US for several years).

    The original Biblical story of Noah is actually a very boring story. The characters are one dimensional; there is very little plot; and there really is no antagonist. You could read the entirety of Noah's story in less than 15 minutes. There simply isn't enough source material to make an engaging 2 hour film. So it is absurd for religious people to get enraged because the director embellished the story. All his additions added depth and background to the characters - making you sympathize with Noah and his family. The addition of an antagonist that wasn't in the original story, and the internal moral dilemma Noah has to face concerning his family, made the story entertaining and thought provoking - something that cannot be said for the original Biblical myth. So, if anything, Darren Aronofsky breathed life into this story - something Christians have FAILED to do.

    • @Kingsherry
      @Kingsherry 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that boy-cotting the film is unnecessary. However, there's a lot of material in the bible to develop sub-plots before the flood. Angels materialized into humans and had sex with women, the women later gave birth to demon/human offspring that became violent giants. Noah had opposition amongst everyone surrounding him, plus everyone was just wicked etc. Sometimes you have to fill in the blanks of what could have happened, like I'm sure once it rained people were trying to get on the ark forcefully. The movie could have been way better had it been closer to the original story.

    I really liked the movie Noah, the acting was great and the effects were cool. I just wish there had been more cool prehistoric animals shown, and I wish Aronofsky had done something with the mysterious idea of the Nephilim, that would have been so cool. Yeah there's the rock people fallen angels, but they have nothing to do with the Nephilim, who were basically evil. And I wish they had shown more of how awful humanity was and why God decided to destroy them. There was that one scene where Noah went out into their camp which was good and disturbing, but I think they could have emphasized it more.

    Just saw it. I have to say, though I love Russell Crowe and generally enjoyed his performance, he didn't convince me 100%. I thought he really started to get into the character and I got invested only half-way through the movie. My actually favorite performance was Ray Winstone, who is Oscar-worthy in my opinion. I loved that he wasn't just a baddie, but a developed character who actually had his motivations, and even when he was cruel and ruthless, he still was an interesting and intimidating villain.

    I'm an atheist and "The Ten Commandments" is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love the story, the characters, Cecil B. DeMille's epic sets and even though I'm not gay I f-ing love the costumes in that movie! Ramses' war armor near the end of the movie is brilliant. And Lily the Water Girl, in that perfect dress with a flower in her hair, is one of the best images of feminine beauty ever.
    I'm a movie fan. That's my religion. I see images, I hear voices, they tell me great stories of courage and frailty. It makes me glad to be alive.

    I actually really liked the movie. I'm an atheist so I obviously wasn't angered by the religious aspect, but what fundamental Christians have to realise is that if they did a literal adaptation of Noah's story in the Bible, it would be very short and sort of tedious. I thought Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly were excellent and I loved how they didn't try to make anyone appear "prettier" than they were, they didn't have any more make up than necessary. I concur, the score was really beautiful, the sequence with the animals boarding was awesome. I loved the angels not being traditionally represented as humanoid people with halos, because I'm tired of everything always having to be beautiful in Hollywood. Most of the angels' appearance isn't actually described in the Bible, so technically it's up to anyone including them in their works to present them how they wish and I'm glad Aronovsky went this route. *spoiler* I didn't understand why the babies were CGI at first and then real, but whatever. I really liked that Ham's girl got trampled upon instead of being rescued in the last minute. I also thought it was a beautiful moment of acting when Noah couldn't kill the babies and Ila realised they were saved, no pretty crying or single tears, it was very realistic. I didn't feel like the part about having the camp leader secretly board the ship was entirely resolved, I will admit. But overall definitely a film to see again and/or buy on DVD.

      We were on the subject of evolution, and how religion is a waste of time. All it does is turn people against one another, and start wars. Religion rarely speaks the truth about anything. The bible only goes back thousands years. What ever happened to the other 4 and a half billion years of earth's history?

    • @MrJohneblaze822
      @MrJohneblaze822 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      He didn't go into detail about religion. We were talking about evolution, and how what most were told doesn't add up. People use to think the earth was flat, and we were the center of the universe. The bible doesn't really teach you anything. I learned that as a kid going to church every Sunday until High School. I still support my family that does still believe. I just can't stand behind all those lies.

      ***** This vague, cop-out form of speech is so extremely typical for religious demagogs. You can say whatever you want about what religion is supposed to do, fact is that half of the american population believe literally that the bible is the word of God and 100 % of everyone who lived in christendom before science got properly kicked into gear also believed that. The bible wouldn't be written to give very specific information if it wasn't meant to be taken seriously. God created the earth in 7 days, according to the bible. He told a dude named Noah to put two of every animal species on a big ass boat so he could flood the world, that's just things you have to believe if you are going to be a christian, and if you're gonna thumb on these things in the face of science, then you don't hold the true commitment to your belief that you think you do.

    I hated it, but whatever. I think the idea is ridiculous. What was up with the rock angels? So lame. (Yes, I do feel extremely insulted by the fact that they want to use my religion like mythology, but I don't want to get into that.) Ignoring the religious controversy (which is hard to do), I was bored. Maybe it's just not my kind of movie, I don't know. But I didn't care about the characters. The world never felt that "real" and I felt like I was just watching actors, not people. Personally, I give it an F, but I certainly would not give it a B if I could be less biased.

      +Jennifer Adams Franklin I saw the movie in theaters and nothing...absolutely NOTHING about that film was true to the Biblical context. The only thing that was true was the fact that there was an Ark and there was The Flood. Not even the context of evil men in the world was correct and the entire thing from start to finish was an absolute joke.
      How you can come to respect Noah based upon the film is a mystery to me.

  • @ValkyrieOey
    @ValkyrieOey 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    ***** Yeah I am also a Christian who enjoyed the film. I know it was completely off in so many directions but seeing the characters that you have read about countless times come to life was really interesting. The only thing I wanted to see more was how Noah gained his faith.
    In the Bible, the Patriarchs all lived to insanely old ages of like 800,900, and this means that up to 7-9 Patriarchs lived togheter at 1 specific time and that is how they gained their faith by passing it down because they had no Bible back then. It would have been cool to see flash backs of NOah gaining his faith like seeing Enoch transfigure or listening to his great-grandfathers teach of how Adam fell as Adam did live among his sons for a really long time and passed down his faith a lot.
    But I do agree with Chris, the beginning was really rocky and as a Christian I was concerned to see how they would go espacially with the whole idea of the fallen angels helping to build the Ark. But I felt the rest of the movie was quite powerful espacially in the Ark with all the drama and subplots going on there and all the character building that happens inside the Ark. Overall I agree with a B+ rating, I think it is fare given the negative parts of the film but I enjoyed it slightly more and would even bump it up to an A- but definately not an A.

    The thing is, that the story of Noah is supposed to be taken as a symbolic story. NOT a literary event. So it's quite ironic and '' suicidal '' to moan about '' historic accuracy ''. Also, it's a movie. But as a Star wars fan... ehm... I know how you feel? Lol....
    I am an Atheist, but I've actually READ the bible. Something that most Christians in my experience NEVER does. They just listen to what the preachers tell them, they have never actually sat down and read the bible. And usually, they just go with what they personally believe and think, which imo. Is incredibly dishonest, but oh well.
    I actually considered Christianity, which was the reason why I read it.... And that's... When I became an Atheist rofl. But please. Do realize that it's not a story that is supposed to be taken as '' historic fact ''. You're only doing yourself a disservice claiming otherwise.

    All you folks crying about how the movie didn't truly follow the source material and how you are confused about the rock people or "watchers" need to read up and re-educate yourselves on the actual story of Noah and how it was written and not just the King James bible story you remember from your childhood. Aronofsky obviously took a few artistic liberties (like making the watchers rock people) but I love the idea behind this movie because it challenges the sheep who think they know the story and makes them upset that they realize they don't know as much as they thought they did. I was interested in this because I love Aronofsky and I was interested in how he would make a film different than his previous, smaller films, if a tiny bit apprehensive of the possibility of "selling out" for a large Hollywood film. I was also kind of intrigued by the controversy, which after see in the film, I can say was totally overstated and pointless (even saying this as a Christian, whoever was pissed was too over the top). The first act of this film is actually pretty shaky, and the opening scene made me pretty nervous. At first, it seemed like Aronofsky's directorial style wouldn't mesh well with a story or budget this large, but once act two starts, it finds its legs. The pacing in the first half of act two is a bit off but one the flood starts, your interest is kept until the ending shot thanks to the intensity, arresting visuals, and great acting. There are some parts that are distracting, namely the Watchers, which are huge rock monsters with six arms that look like they're from a video game, but you kind of get used to it. Clint Mansell's scores are always great and it's no different here, the effects are pretty awesome, and the editing is nice. It does at times feel like "Aronofsky lite" because it's all a bit toned down, but that's to be expected, and it's still solid. 8.1/10, really good, one thumb up, above average, etc.

    What sick pleasure do you people get from bashing other people's beliefs? And to those people, well-founded beliefs? Don't you think that those with those beliefs believe you just as ignorant and misguided? This is just hate speech. Nothing rational or good about it.

      Abdullah Almosalami It's not really a pleasure, it's more like a duty. You shouldn't be allowed to believe whatever the fuck you want for the rest of your life against better judgement. We don't tell kids they are pokemons or batman once they reach a certain age becaue it isn't good for them.

      Batman _ What on Earth. YOU can judge what is good and bad? What is better judgement? What's good for children? "People shouldn't be allowed to believe what the --- you want for the rest of your life ...". What the hell? What's anyone's business what people believe? "A duty." LOL! Go ahead. Go on your crusade. Become president. Go ahead. Good luck with that.

      Abdullah Almosalami I mean, yeah. I think everybody has the right to make moral judgement calls. Same way you think it's bad to say anything critical about religion because it means alot to people, I happen to think it's extra important to question unbelievable things, ESPECIALLY when they are so close to people's heart you are called a bigot for questioning it. Noah is an unbelievable, impossible and unfathomable story that just can't compute with the real world. That is something kids need to know, same way they need to know Santa don't exist eventually.

    What people don't know is that the bible had books taken i.e Book of Enoch , The Book of Jubilees and several more which all tell this story in great detail. The fact that people will say that this didn't happen is dumb because no one knows what really happened. The Church has proven time and time again that a lot of the things the promote were wrong. I like this version because it puts a new view out there and with the world starting to give up its secrets and some of which are freaking strange cough .UFOs. My mind is open to new ideas. I give it an B+ as well.

I'll have to look into it. Links would help if you have any. One day we will know the whole story. That will be great. For some of us, anyway.

    Going into this film, I will not let my beliefs base my judgement because I know where I stand on it, and I know that not all movies based on The Biblical events will be accurate, but some like Prince Of Eygpt and The Ten Commandments and many Classic Jesus films take the material with such a passion while taking liberty with it and say to people this is how we see it. To all the Christians, please don't go into this with judgement, and make people think we're dumb and ignorant to art when we're not. To Athiests and non-Christians, please don't ignore this film based on where it came from, and go see it to see whether or not it's good. Please everyone, go and enjoy what I believe as a fan of film and as a Christian to be an enjoyable experience by a good director and great performers and fantastic visuals that tells a view to a masterful story of faith.

    Everyone is really missing the point of the ending for this movie. Gods messages to Noah are very vague and it's just his interpretation that Humanity has to die. The point is: No matter what he chose to do, he was right. If he decided to kill the babies, then he has shown Humanity is irredeemable and should and will die, if he spares them with mercy, he has shown Humanity deserves another chance and it gets one.
