    I don’t have to leave anymore
    What I have is right here
    Spent my nights and days before
    Searching the world for what’s right here
    Underneath and unexplored
    Islands and cities I have looked
    Here I saw
    Something I couldn’t over look
    I am yours now
    So now I don’t ever have to leave
    I’ve been found out
    So now I’ll never explore
    See what I’ve done
    That bridge is on fire
    Go back to where I’ve been
    I’m froze by desire
    No need to leave
    Where would I be
    If this were to go under
    It’s a risk I’d take
    I’m froze by desire
    As if a choice I'd make
    I am yours now
    So now I don’t ever have to leave

      It's so unique in how it sounds. Sure it fits into a genre, but it's not like where you go, "ah yeah this sound was popular from 200X to 200X or ah yeah, sounds like a song from early [era]." I think those bold, simple riffs on the guitar that cut through everything really contributes. It's not just some droning rythm in the background. It plays really well with the vocals.

      Nothing is ever ahead of its time. Especially not in 2009. There had been music a great deal more complicated and whatever else a long long time before this came along. I loved this album but to say it was ahead of it's time is just ridiculous.

    "I am yours now, so now I don't ever have to leave / I've been found out, so now I'll never explore"
    This like a couple of the XX's songs seems to be about conflicting aspects of a romantic relationship; while in the beginning everything fits together perfectly and the lyrics echo the sentiment of being fulfilled - "I don't have to leave anymore, all I have is right here / spent my nights and days before, searching the world for what's right here" - over the course of time things start to break down. The middle part of the song seems to be about questioning the relationship; "That bridge is on fire back the way I came... where would I be if this were to go under" doesn't suggest a commitment out of love, but more out of routine and the difficulty of ending things and/or finding something new. By the end the hook takes on a bit of a darker meaning to me, "so now I don't ever have to leave" sounds more like resignation to a life sentence than an expression of contentment.

    • @ResidentScrub
      @ResidentScrub 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      I always interpreted the song as finding "the one" and being completely devoted to someone, rather than resigning yourself to the relationship.
      "That bridge is on fire..." symbolises, to me, never wanting to go back to the time or life you had before meeting this person you're with.
      "Where would I be if this were to go under?" to me, is thinking out loud "where would I be without you" and wondering how you'd cope if the relationship ended because this other person is absolutely everything to you "but that's the risk I take" to be with the person.
      "I am yours now, so now I don't ever have to leave" as they are both singing this together toward the end of the song I always take this as a reassurance from both sides, to each other, that we pretty much belong together and it doesn't have to change if we don't let shit get in the way.

      Delroy the hint that it might not be the case is the line “so now I’ll never explore”, it’s not sang with love or relieve, but more like a realization that they will never get to explore and try new things, they’re stuck....

    • @lightbreathermusic
      @lightbreathermusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The first time you hear "So now I'll never explore", you think it's about finding the right one and you don't have to search for better anymore. When you hear it after the second verse, you slowly understand that she is trapped in his love for her, so finding another one and breaking up with him, as much as she wants to, can be extremely difficult for her AND for him. You can also hear the beat slowly deteriorating. Time after time, you hear reversed samples and unnecessary bass lines that just don't sound right. Such a creative track!

    For quite a long time I've tried to understand the video since it's more complex than what people might percieve on the surface. For starters the coreograph is brilliant, each cycle varies slightly giving the appereance of something that with time deteriorates, the dance as well has two elements, the four dancers in the back, and the two at the front. To me the meaning of each is particularly interesting, the front ones make a bridge, as the lyrics suggest. The backing dancers are divided in two semi groups, the middle ones are the ones in a relationship, and the outsiders represent the islands to "explore" or rather the pool of different possible partners. The coreography cycle begins each time with a kiss and rapidly moves to the outsiders who also make some sort of a kiss. As the song evolves you can hear "I am yours now, so now I don't ever have to leave, I've been found out, so now I'll never explore" signifying that they both find their other half, but as the song progresses both the lights and the coreography dims as if something isn't right, much to the hopefull tone of a new relationship that was founded on the grounds of finding the right one. But "the brigge is on fire" by the middle of the song, also represented by the characters on the front that are leaving, both representing male and female respectively, so she stops seeing what up until this point was their "love routine" represented by the different cycles. After the bridge collapses there is no way but to go under, which I'm not very keen, but might refer to the fact there's something beneath it that isn't quite clear. The dance on the backgroung then takes the spotlight as the girl starts to phisically show some signs of deterioration, she doesn't kiss with her eyes close anymore, her eyes turn more tired and her skin more pale, so she defects first, she in fact breaks the cycle. By the time we arrive at the second "I am yours now..." we get a sense of possetion not compromise, seeing how she yearns for a different relationship, represented on the guy that dances with her (unaffected I must add, because he isn't part of the relationship, yet, rather than an outsider, the reason to "explore"), so she leaves. Much to the disgrace of the guy next to her who keeps on playing as if nothing happened, maybe because he doesn't want this to end, but after she leaves he is left hearbroken and visiblily afflicted, while the girl who dances with him keeps on going as she isn't really affected. In the end she isn't anymore there and he is left sad and probably regreting not being able to look back at the outside the same way the girl did, so he's on he's knees aparently alone with a posible candidate as there are still fish in the water, but for him, his world is worthless and he'd prefer to see it burn, alone, which is also accentuated by the last "So now I'll never explore", meaning he doesn't want to explore, everything has brutally ended.
    This is one of my favourite songs of all time, I've taken inspiration on the meanings provided by others and I've added my own personal touch. Summarizing, this song is a masterpiece, the video is deeply meaningful and might just be a story that many can relate, either by being the girl or the guy. I personally do feel affected by it since I'm the persona that looks in the end the endless sea with sorrow and pain, hopeful that sometime, somewhere I'll be able to cope with the loss.
    Much love, and if you read it all, thanks you might add more elements, I'll be happy to read you.

    This video and song in my opinion is a masterpiece, the idea of relationships being like islands and the bridge to the previous being set on fire. The video with the subtle changes in girls dancers representing her love fading while the guy for most of the song continues along obliviously until she finally has left... Then the final dance with just the girl who would dance with the guy at the back dancing by herself while the set burns around her representing that the guy was still in love with her but it's over now...
    That's what I've taken from it anyway, literally a masterpiece.

    • @SobrietyandSolace
      @SobrietyandSolace 8 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      +Stephen Holmes That's pretty much what I picked up form the visuals, too. I prefer subtle progression to blatant visual indicators; narratively I think of secret lovers or cheaters who were clearly in the wrong relationship to begin with as the bridge to the old island slowly crumbles. But now they've been found out, they belong to eachother, so there is no more slipping away back home to the old partner. They burn, but they burn together

    • @SobrietyandSolace
      @SobrietyandSolace 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      +Little Wolf Taima The repetition could also represent cycles of multiple failed relationships, rather than just the decline of one, emphasising how THIS ONE is 'it' whether it's right or wrong

    • @dundunbadms4037
      @dundunbadms4037 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Little Wolf Taima the repetitions could also mean the sequence of love. we experience it as something repetitive yet we love that person so that repetition wont easily bore us. the dancers in my perspective represent emotions and love. then the changes in the repetition shows us how love for others will slowly fade will the other one doesnt.

      @aliar86 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hmm, the video is definitely about the end of a relationship. But that's a rather surface level reading of the lyrics. I think "i have been found out" talks about the inherent fear in any relationship that this is it, you will no longer explore (date). It's a bittersweet realization that the voice won't date anymore, a realization that comes with a lot of anxiety that often leads to cold feet.
      We are all islands exploring until we begin a relationship, then we lose some of our individuality.

    So now I don't ever have to leave

    And I am yours now (I am yours now)

    If you dont get the video just read how i watched it
    "Wow this vid is great!"
    "Is it gonna repeat like this?
    "Nothing is changing..."
    Towards the end
    "Woah. I didnt even noticed people were leaving... now the vid is over."
    Some people cant appreciate something until its over. Relationships are the same...

    I'm pretty sure i've watched this like 20 times now lol. Looking for all the subtle changes in each "repetition" if you can call it that. The mood changes gradually from start to finish and there are major relationship altering events expressed in subtle changes to facial expressions or hesitations in the dance. I love it. I didn't even know I was into this sort of music but I love this, I'm in. Ty PBS Idea Channel for the introduction.

      +Pavlin Petkov Honestly I don't think it would have cost as much as some. Most rappers can spend a million on a video alone and all this would be is wages for 8 dances, set cost and then production costs. I think it'd be under 150k, not bad for a video.

    ISLAS --
    Ya no tengo que irme....
    Lo que tengo está aquí...
    Antes pasaba noches y días
    buscando en el mundo lo que está aquí....
    Por debajo y sin explorar
    Islas y ciudades he mirado....
    Aquí vi algo que no puedo ignorar....
    Soy tuya ahora...
    Así que ahora nunca tendré que irme..
    He sido encontrada....
    Así que ahora nunca exploraré...
    Mira lo que he hecho...
    Ese puente está ardiendo....
    Y así he estado yo...
    Estoy congelada por el deseo
    No hace falta que me vaya....
    Donde estaría
    si estoy se fuera abajo..
    Es un riesgo que correré...
    Estoy congelada por el deseo...
    Como si fuera una elección que hice....
    Soy tuya ahora...
    Así que ahora nunca tendré que irme...
    He sido encontrada...
    Así que ahora nunca exploraré...

    Here I saw
    Something I couldn't over look

    So now I don't ever have to leave

      +Mitchell Steckbauer Hmm, it's a repeated camera move instead of a continuous one, contains focal length distortion from a lens and represents a real space instead of a highly abstract flat perspective from compositing footage, has choreographed dances that make up the majority of the video's content instead of differentiating clips of a single performance, and the story (abstract as it may be) actually has an arc that changes and has an ending.

He's in love, she's coming out of it. Then its cheek kisses and then she leaves. I have only just realized this.

    • @Raphoovvv

      the 6 people dancing doesn't represent 6 different people, it represents their relationship as a whole. The blonde woman slowly distances herself from the man and eventually they break up, the other 4 people represent their commitment to the relationship/their love for eachother. At least that's my take on it, it's still art though so everyone finds their own meaning in it.

    The dancing pair in the background shows the couple's physical interaction, while the pair sitting in the front depict the emotional interaction. The pair in both the front and back are in unison initially. As the song continues, though, the girl in the front stops dancing and eventually leaves, and soon so does the man. But the couple in the background is still dancing until near the end. This means that while couple lost interest in the relationship, it still went through the motions in a desperate attempt to rekindle the love they once had. They fail. Basically the song is talking about how relationships can fail when a couple falls into a pattern of monotony that has no variation or passion.

    not sure if this is how the xx wanted us to perceive this song, but I rly think the video coincides with the song. the song rly means something completely different with the music video. years ago when i first heard this song i thought what a romantic song but if u listen closely there isn't any emotion when she sings the chorus it's just stating that she is his/hers and that they will be together for ever. but personally what i think this all means (when u include the video) is that a false promise is being made. sort of like young relationships/young love. you think you'll be with your first love or partner forever and that you'll never have to leave them or "explore" aka look & find love in someone else which in someways can hurt an individual because they are being restricted. u see in the video that the blonde female dancer slowly is drifting away, but she's being held tight by this promise she made about loving her partner forever. on the other hand, the song could literally just be a love song and the video is just another creatively beautiful way for views to not only be left questioning the video but the song's meaning itself. rly makes you think.

    When I first heard this, I thought it was a love song. I wasn't entirely wrong, but after watching this video I realized it's about falling out of love instead of falling in love. Even since I noticed this, I haven't been able to shake the worry that the lyrics still resonate with me as perfectly romantic, despite the song clearly having a melancholy undertone. Am I complacent in the idea of a romance that traps me? Why does that thought give me a sense of security instead of sadness?
    I never thought love was easy but it shouldn't be an inherently rueful concept in my mind--it should be joyous. This song makes me think perhaps I love a little too fiercely, enough to become stuck or hurt, or worse to scare away someone I care deeply about. That's better than the other interpretation, which is that I simply want to be unhappy. If I'm being honest, it's probably a mix of both.

    Everyone will interpret this video differently but to me it's pretty clear how it's about two couples falling out of love for different circumstances. The one in the front because they're growing apart probably because of routine, the part where he keeps trying alone at first and then painfully realizes she doesn't want to anymore it's heartbreaking. The one in the back because of third parties who don't really love them but still succeed in breaking them up, that's why in the end the girl keeps doing the same as if she didn't care at all about the damage she made. It's beautiful, I fell in love with this song again after years of forgetting it existed.

      I searched endlessly for 13 years after hearing it once at 4am on Fuse and my brain is finally full circle and at peace. Never heard it again…..The bass line has been stuck in my head all this time. So happy you found it too. The comfort of nostalgia is incomparable and music has a special way of doing it that’s incomparable 🎶

    this music video is probably my favourite ever, it's so good and must have taken a long time to perfect, every time I watch it I notice something different in the scenes❤️

    This is one of those songs that really aren't as good without the video accompanying it, although, the repetitive nature of the first half video gives an lingering bother feeling, I understand why. With a long lasting relationship with very subtle changes that slowly unravels until it quick goes downhill altogether. The visual representation and metaphors really actually add to the music itself.

      Makes you wonder if everything in life works that way, repeating over and over again until they all rot and fade out...

      Don't agree. This is one of the best songs I've heard in years. The minimalism is astounding in what it achieves through the production, but the songwriting is clearly the strong point. Clever title as well.

      Aere Perenius I agree, I never said it wasn't a great song, rather I'm giving praise because the video actually directly corresponds with the music and tells a story, and improves the experience of it, not trying to be super eye catching and just a random jumble, but, rater, minimalistic, like you said.

      David Lam You're right, I didn't read your post properly. I _do_ agree that the video and the music together make a superior product.

    I actually really like this music video- I think it matches the meaning of the song in a lot of ways. From what I gather (and from what others have pointed out), the song is about finding that "certain someone" too soon in life. Your happy to have found your true love, but then you realize that you're done.. no more looking and no more new/exciting experiences with other lovers. In a lot of cases, this could lead to self sabotage in the relationship. I think that showing these 2 people repeatedly kiss as their sentiment disappears around them is a pretty good way of visualizing the meaning of the song.

    Almost every speaker I own seems to believe there are incredibly low frequencies in this song. This song is bassier than almost all rap I've heard.

    That video clip is amazing anyone who disagrees has a very simple mind. Its slowly telling a tail of breakup and the choreography expresses so much in simple body language.
