I would argue that he may just have the #1 channel for sports cars in general. He's just as happy behind the wheel of a brand new 911 as he is behind the wheel of vintage sports cars from the 50s and 60s.
I drove a '63 E-type roadster on a couple of occasions back in the late 70s. It still stands as the ultimate automotive experience in my life. It did still have the original gear box, and I remember it was a bit difficult going from 1st to 2nd gear.
My father had a 1969 E-type that was absolutely gorgeous in yellow with a black interior. Driving it was an experience, to put it mildly. The handling was so much better than you’d expect on such a long car, but the real surprise was the performance: it was much faster than you’d expect, and when you planted your foot down you got shoved back in your seat HARD. The only bad thing about the car was the insane level of maintenance, and even then it broke down a lot. But when it was running well it was heaven on wheels.
When you say high maintenance was it mechanical or electrical problems?they say the engine is reliable but the cooling system isn't the best ,and then there the dreaded prince of darkness "LUCAS"
GOD I love this channel. So glad I found/subscribed. In 1970 I bought a 1959 XK-150 and a good friend of mine bought a '64 XKE the same month. I sold mine in 1975 when I ran out of money restoring it, and my friend wrapped his around a large oak tree, lingered for a few months in the hospital, and succumbed to his injuries. But he gave me a few death rides in that XKE after which I promised myself "never again". However, the Jag experience was so thoroughly ingrained that I took subsequent rides, barely escaping death each time. But it was a great car, and I still miss my XK-150. Try buying one fully restored for less than $200k nowadays. I bought mine for $750.00! This YT channel is the best of this genre, bar none. Cheers.
Great video. Enzo Ferrari said the E type was the most beautiful car in the world! It's nice to be able to see over the bonnet/hood when driving, not a common thing nowadays!
Personally, the opalescent gunmetal with red leather interior is my favorite color combo for E-types. This is a close second. Love that classy white on red.
Not Kia catching strays in a sport classic's video. 💀What a beauty, the work that's been done to it is magnificent, metal center console with burgundy interior is looking stunning topped off with a wood & chrome steering wheel.
My uncle had one of these. Great fun, beautiful car. Interesting observation about the Smith’s gauges in FBDO. Speaking of which, the speedo in the particular Jag is a bit wonky. I know you were doing more than 40 in some of this video! Anyway, glad you had fun!
I love the vicarious experience of having a driver view of the E-Type, with synchro manual no less - sweet. Is the E-Type stable and comfortable at 70 - 90 mph (or more) by modern standards, which of course is different than asking can it just go fast? I have a 15 yo 5 series BMW that requires effort around town and 0-60. Many modern crossovers of course can get a jump at a stop light and 0-60. Also I don't want to stress my car for silly advantage, every single time! However, on the highway it is super stable especially with the current Michelin tires. It can be in it's element especially when there are highway grades and curves. Leaves some modern vehicles behind under "GT" conditions.
@@TedwardDrives I suppose the filmmakers felt that no one would ever notice. Especially since 99% of people have never seen an original car. PS I would sell a kidney, to have that Jag!
You mentioned the diff grabbing on the U-turn at the beginning of the drive. Perhaps when the gearbox was switched they also went to a limited slip diff?
I've only driven a series 3 V12 version of this and those feel like they're a bit more of a luxurious take on this, while this series 1 is more of a pure sports car by comparison.
A healthy moss crashbox isn't half as bad as these reviewers make them seem. It's not bad at all actually, just make sure you come to a full rest before selecting 1st.
This is one of those cars which sound really great and drive good considering production year, but honestly, I never understood the visual appeal of E-Type. I had the opportunity to meet two different ones in person and I am really having hard time understanding where all the praise is coming from or for. I would accept a rationale, if anyone would care to share. To me, a Volvo P1800 looks better than this E-type. Am I strange? :)
"the up-dated gearbox that you would find on the later Series 1 and the 4.2 Series 2" This is rather misleading - it makes it sound (A) as though there might have been Series 1 3.8s with the "all-synchro", and (B) as though there were different engine options in the Series 2: To be clear - the all-synchro box was introduced in 1964 together with the 4.2 engine on the Series 1. At this point, the 3.8 engine with Moss box was dropped from the E-type, but was still used in the Mark 2 and S-type saloons. (They received the all-synchro box later.) All Series 2 E-types have the 4.2 engine with all-synchro 4-speed, except for the longer wheel-base 2+2 version where an auto-box was an option. Oddly, the overdrive box was never offered in the 2+2 although it fits straight in. (Personal view: The sensible thing for Jaguar to have done was to make the E-type fractionally longer in the first place, to give much-needed legroom and allow overdrive to be fitted.)
@@TedwardDrives How many people do you think knew what the real gauges looked like when this movie was made? And of them, how many do you think would have cared?
You drove an "unrestored" XK120 in another video and it was a mess. Now compare that car to this car and notice the difference. Does anyone actually think this beautiful E Type should not have been made to look better? Does anyone really prefer dents, torn seats, smelly carpets, rust and all the other signs that make something so beautiful, so beat up? I hate to break to people but there is nothing charming about crap just because it's old.
What's your favorite British Roadster?
These are.
Imagine having a E Type and a F Type in the same garage 🤤
This, the AC Ace and the Healey 3000, probably
This or an XK120 just for the noise from that engine!!
@@paulgraham1465 Those would be my first choices, plus the Sunbeam Tiger.
NGL, Tedward is the #1 channel for manual car videos.

Old inline sixes always sound so good ❤
The English twin cam straight sixes have a lovely growl which really suits the jaaaaaag

A sunny day driving a E Type roadster, that's definitely a fantastic day.
Now, _this_ is prime British motoring!
You just renamed the video
Man, that engine sound!
@Hello how are you doing?
absolutely stunning, any person not only car people would look at his and go like dayummmmmmmmmm!!!
That sliding mesh whine at 1st gear is so nostalgic
Love the old Jags. I chuckled when you said Lucas electronics: Lucas - prince of darkness. Lol
Wow the white on red looks beautiful. Gotta love an E type! Bond group has quite the collection!!
Hi Tedward, your videos bring back these fantastic feelings when driving a fantastic car. I hope you carry on!
I’ve watched Ferris Bueller so many times and never realized that. You’re correct though they completely used the wrong gages
Something special about driving classic cars 👌
Gotta love that speedo: "We're doing 50. No, wait, we're doing 70! No, wait, actually we're doing 50. No, wait..."
Great roads. Great video. Great car! I had a ‘64 FHC for 30 years. The Moss box while bullet proof was a pain.
I’ve watched countless hours of your videos and cannot explain why I was so nervous watching you drive this Jag. I need a drink now. 🥃 Thanks Tom! 😳

That engine bay is stunning. Hope to have one of these in my garage at some point in the future.
Love those old hand wavy speedos “meh you’re sort of doing between 40 and 60… ish” 😂

I bought a 63 roadster in 1975 for $900. A bit rough, but I fixed it up and drove it to college.
Wow pretty cheap
@ they were just used cars at the time.
absolute top tier

Lucky Tedward, getting to drive all these I6 Jaguars.
Today I was driving home and spotted 11th gen civic, no it wasn’t a type R or SI
Just a base model civic and I got excited over it lmao
We are the same.
Inline sixes are the best sounding engines.

@Hello William how are you doing?
The “Ferris Bueller” car was an MGB with a fiberglass body and automatic transmission. They made 3 of them for the production.
correct. but they could have used B roll shots of the correct gauges to make it look real.

Yes we all know that but they could have used correct gauges for the shot of the odometer
