The Bolongadji is an integral part of the cultural heritage of the "Peuls-Awouloubé" community. This unique instrument is deeply tied to the legend of Samba Gueladjiégui, a hero of the Fulani epic from Fouta Toro. According to tradition, upon Samba Gueladjiégui's victorious return from battle, he was greeted with the melodic songs of "Yéla," played on the Bolongadji. Since then, the "Yéla" has become a hallmark of significant occasions, such as weddings, baptisms, and the welcoming of foreign nobles.
The Bolongadji is crafted from a plant species known as "Laytédé," which thrives in forested areas. The preparation process is meticulous: once the Laytédé is planted, it forms pathways that give rise to "Paalis." An opening is made at the mouth of the Paalis, which are then submerged in water mixed with salt and left to decay. Finally, they are dried in the sun for three to four days, a process that imparts the distinctive sound to both the Bolongadji and the Corrés, a set of calabashes. While "Corrés" refers to a collection of calabashes, "Bolongadji" denotes a single one.
As the foundation of the "Yéla" songs, the Bolongadji is inseparable from the cultural identity of the Peuls-Awouloubé. This traditional knowledge is carefully preserved and passed down with pride across generations. Even children instinctively learn the "Yéla" songs by playing the Bolongadji, ensuring that this rich heritage remains vibrant.
Remarkably, the tradition of the Bolongadji and the "Yéla" transcends borders. Griots from Mali and Mauritania also contribute to the preservation and celebration of this musical legacy, highlighting its enduring significance within the broader Fulani cultural landscape.
