This is the video channel of TALKING OBJECTS LAB.
TALKING OBJECTS LAB is an artistic research project dedicated to the decolonization of memory and knowledge, unfolding in think tanks, symposiums, artistic interventions, and exhibitions over years. The curatorial team consists of members from Kenya, Senegal and Germany, the countries where the majority of our activities take place: currently Mahret Ifeoma Kupka, Isabel Raabe, Malick Ndiayé, Njoki Ngumi and Chao Tayiana Maina. The LAB accompanies the TALKING OBJECTS ARCHIVE, an archive for decolonial knowledge production. In the long term, TALKING OBJECTS should contribute to a new ethics of relations between the Global South and the Global North. The TALKING OBJECTS LAB wants to provide space for long-term research and collaborative learning. The TALKING OBJECTS ARCHIVE, planning to launch in 2024, seeks to break with euro-centric knowledge systems and visualize the poly-perspective nature of the knowledge.

The Tambing, often referred to as "the Fulani flute," originates from Guinea-Conakry and is deeply rooted in the culture of Fouta Djalon. The crafting of this instrument begins with selecting a suitable stick, typically sourced from backwaters or rivers. Once the stick is cut to the desired length for comfortable handling, both ends are sealed using honey residue. This preparation is followed by measuring and cutting the stick precisely to ensure optimal playability.
There are two types of Tambing: a smaller version and a larger one. The body of the flute is carefully designed with two to six small holes, allowing for different tones when played. To enhance its appearance, the Tambing is often wrapped in vibrant, multi-colored plastic, adding a decorative touch to its traditional design.
The Tambing holds not only musical but also symbolic and cultural significance. It is steeped in tradition and is believed to possess healing properties. This is evident in a traditional medicinal practice where a Tambing is used to treat a sick person. The process involves dipping the flute into water while playing it. The water, now imbued with symbolic value, is then used to wash the sick person or given to them to drink.
The Tambing is prominently featured during significant events, such as weddings, baptisms, and other celebrations, underscoring its importance in Fulani cultural life. Additionally, the transmission of knowledge about the Tambing is highly valued. Many Tambing players actively teach their children how to craft and play the flute, ensuring that this rich heritage is preserved and passed down through generations.
This combination of artistry, tradition, and cultural significance makes the Tambing a powerful emblem of the Fulani community’s identity and legacy.
