President Rodrigo Roa Duterte was received by Israeli President Reuven Rivlin in an official welcome ceremony at the Official Residence of the President in Jerusalem.
Thereafter, the two leaders proceeded to a meeting together with their official delegation. The President was joined by his daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and his Cabinet members.
In his official statement, President Rivlin warmly welcomed the President and the Philippine delegation. He underscored the shared history between the Philippines and the Jewish State that stretches back during the open door policy of the former Philippine Commonwealth government in the late 1930s, and the passing of the United Nations (UN) Resolution 181 in 1947 that was also supported by the Philippines.
“We are doing everything in our strength first of all to build our country. In the last 70 years, we have built a country that can carry the burden of security, that can carry the burden of economy, in developing everything,” President Rivlin said.
“Actually, we have faced a lot of challenges and we took every challenge to become an opportunity to rebuild or to do something that can really bring us in front of the entire world. We are doing that and we are cooperating with every country that are trying to do the same to protect their own people and to carry the burden of security,” the Israeli leader added.
For his part, President Duterte introduced his Cabinet officials to President Rivlin and expressed his gratitude to the State for the critical assistance it extended during the Marawi City siege against the extremists.
“We intend to explore further in the field of investments and trade and there are a lot of opportunities Israel can help us on this. And of course, to set up investments, business in my country,” the Chief Executive said.
The President also vowed that the country will remain loyal to the tenets of democracy and the right of a nation to exist peacefully.
“And so with the worldwide terrorism now, it behooves upon Israel and the Philippines to cooperate more than ever to defeat one enemy which I think could never disappear within the next 10 years,” President Duterte ended.
