  • Modern baseball minds overwhelmingly agree that clutch - the ability to step up your game in big moments - is not a real skill. Clutch moments exist, but clutch players do not.
    Counterpoint? Madison Bumgarner.
In October of 2014, the newly minted ace of the San Francisco Giants clutched up in astonishing fashion, turning in one of the most indelible postseason performances in MLB history and cementing himself as a franchise icon and modern baseball legend in the process.

There will never be another type of performance like Mad Bums.

When you think about what he did in game 7
      1. five relief innings
      2. Pitched a shutout several days before and happened to pitch seven innings of one run ball in game 1
      3. Completely shut down the hot Royals lineup
      4. 25 years of age and three rings
Easily one of the greatest one-man carrying a team on his back in sports history

The Giants’ non-Bumgarner starters in that 2014 World Series: 9.35 ERA
Even the one game SF won that he did not throw a pitch, they had to score 11 runs

He friggen tanked the shutdown pitching in the WS that year.

Vogelsong was a ND in Game 4 since Strickland got the W in that game, where they scored 11. The way you worded your comment makes it seem like Vogelsong lost his start, but he didn’t. Peavy lost 2 games (Games 2 & 6) and Hudson lost 1 (Game 3)

Unfortunately our football teams were unable to do the same. Speaking as a Raiders fan.

Such an amazing run by Mad Bum. He was the only SP for us to win WS games. He won Game 1, then Strickland (a reliever) won Game 4, then Mad Bum won Game 5 and our reliever Affeldt won Game 7 with that clutch 5 inning save by Bummy. So amazing to witness. I was smoking through cigars game after game, I was so nervous.

      I don't think he'll make it
While yes he was elite in the postseason but his stats aren't that good in the regular season
His stint in Arizona was also really bad

My favorite W.S. ever. Never have I seen a Championship won in baseball by pretty much one person. Amazing.

Do this for Dirk Nowitzki‘s 2011 NBA championship run, he went through a gauntlet of Hall of Famer‘s and young stars, easily the most difficult NBA title of all time
