The CUTEST Snake You Will Ever See: Baby Southern Hognose Snake!

The Southern hognose snake (Heterodon simus) might just be the cutest snake in the Southeast!
These tiny colubrids rarely exceed 2 feet long as adults, and are restricted in range to sandy soil ecotypes such as dunes, longleaf pine woodland, and turkey oak scrub.
They are also dietary specialists, with special rear fangs designed to subdue and pop their favorite food - toads. The bufotoxins contained in these amphibians would be enough to kill most predators, but Southen hogs are able to process them without dying, which is highly convenient.
Their little snoot looks so 'hogish' thanks to modified rostral scales that allow them to easily burrow in the sand to dig up a meal or evade predation.
Unfortunately, these little cuties are considered threatened in most states where they occur as human development encroaches upon and fragments their sandy homes.
