Peter Graves was the original Jim Phelps, played by Jon Voigt in the movie. The introduction of every show ended with the voice saying "This tape will self-destruct in five seconds. Good luck, Jim."
The theme track may have been from a tv show more than 50 years old but here it was performed by Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen. They are two of the four members of the legendary band U2!!
I jumped into the comments hoping someone pointed that out. It's like watching Free Guy, hearing the Star Wars theme when Guy pulls out the lightsaber and saying; "This Is Where This Comes From?" "Originally?" (Or I guess technically, if you watch the Family Guy Star Wars movies, and say it, is closer)
@@timcarder2170 or how about an even older reference that almost everyone bricks on? HEY YOOOUUU GUUUUUUUUYS! Everyone thinks it's from the Goonies, but the Goonies was referencing The Electric Company. Family Guy sorta helped there when they had a cutaway of the EC theme, but for the most part people just sorta forget about it (even though it was Morgan Freeman's first big job). On the subject of Phelps, Graves, and Voight: I took my dad to see this when it came out. He loved the original show. I've never seen him madder at a piece of media when we got out. He was absolutely livid they made Phelps the bad guy, and called it by saying something like "well that explains why Graves didn't want to do it."
I love that Tom wanted her to reprise her role so much he's asked her repeatedly to come back; with every flick he asks her again and again. Her delivery of "It's like a warm blanket" is one of my favourite lines ever.
I re-watched the whole series last year and I honestly forgot how good the original film is. It's a fantastic spy thriller with a plot I can almost follow. But after years of sequels, which get better every time, what surprised me most about the original? There isn't one shootout in the whole film. IIRC I think a gun is only fired a couple of times in the whole film!
Jim was the leader in the TV show from the 60's and the 80's Peter Graves who played Jim Refused to Reprise his role as Jim Phelps as he believed that Jim would Never betray the MIF.
the original film is really special. Brian De Palma at his best imo. The script is still great; the twists and turns of the plot are better than most modern spy movies even. The camera-work is masterclass and the 90s spy tech ages like fine wine
I feel so old if all you recognize Emilo Esteves is The Mighty Ducks! 😮 lol. He was a star before then! Got to watch Breakfast club. I loved this movie mission impossible. And the music is from the TV show first. Love the aquarium scene. It was amazing! Enjoy
Yes, the big blonde was in Die Hard. But I don't think you think he was the character he was. I think you're thinking it's Karl, because of the hair. Close, though, because he was Karl's brother, who had shorter hair and glasses, and was the first one John takes out.
@@MrGpschmidt yeah, depressing that. He looked like he might be headed towards a pretty good career in movies, too. He had to share so much screen time with Rickman and could have easily been overshadowed, but he held his own.
@inarar5334 he was also in Witness, which he shared scenes with Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis, and a young Viggo Mortensen. Very easy he could have been overlooked in that movie as just another Amish pacifist character but he held his own.

I saw this on the big screen with my dad back when it came out in 1996 when I was a kid, I was MINDBLOWN at how good it was and i left that theatre breathless - super excited to see you guys react to these movies!!
Great reaction you two to this 90s action thriller & the start of this very entertaining franchise....one good thing to note going forward, other than Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) is in all of the Mission Impossible films as well. 😉👍
In that really quiet computer room scene, Tom kept hitting the floor instead of stopping short like we see in the final cut. The way they fixed it is Tom put coins in his shoes to offset his center of balance enough.
Kristen, "What do you think? You think he's going to (doubles) cross you?" Then quickly covers her mouth😂, so cute. I know English isn't her first language, which is why it's so cute.
Hey, Kristen and Michael! This franchise is based on the 1960s TV SERIES and its 1980s revival both starring Peter Graves. Both runs of the series were more about long cons by a small team of operatives such as the opening set piece and relied on the gimmick of wearing disguises and utilizing cool spy gadgets. The movies retain those elements but are more about white-knuckle stunts performed by Cruise himself! The LALO SCHIFRIN score is one of TV's most iconic themes and never fails to set the electrifying pace! What many people don't realize is that JON VOIGHT is playing JIM PHELPS, the team leader of the TV series played by PETER GRAVES in the '60s original and '80s reboot! That means the hero of the series turns into the villain of the movie! Graves was actually approached for a cameo but he didn't like the twist about his signature character and declined to participate. Phelps kills his young wife because his ego couldn't tolerate her being attracted to his young protege. He wanted absolute loyalty and commitment from her which she betrayed by coming to Ethan's defense. Having her work in close proximity to a guy like Ethan, Phelps' September-May relationship was doomed from the get-go! Lol. The hot youngsters' mutual attraction was evident in the first scene! The series is mostly consistently excellent and is one of the best action franchises ever made! The first three films are products of their directors bearing their undeniable signatures. This was every inch a BRIAN DEPALMA film with POV shots, flashback sequences and low-angle vantage points. DePalma was most definitely inspired by JULES DASSIN's heist films for the famous Langley caper scene. In both 1955's "RIFIFI" and 1964's "TOPKAPI", the intricate thefts are plotted out for the audience, executed in SCORELESS SILENCE, initiated from a ceiling ingress and nearly foiled with a slip. The second film is every inch a JOHN WOO movie and the third film is every inch a J.J. ABRAMS movie.
I really hope you continue with this series. As others have noted, it's a series that takes a while to find a consistent tone. (I think that really starts in MI3.) Likewise, I think Cruise doesn't find the "correct" way to play Ethan Hunt until the 3rd movie. The best entries in the series are arguably 3, 4, 5 and 6 - so I hope you continue. Too many reactors just do the first one, then skip the rest.
This is one of the few franchises that did very well. There are currently 7 movies. There will be an 8th movie released in 2025. Each movie gets better as you go through them, although people seem to be divided on the second movie. Since you guys have started reacting to this franchise, you guys will have to go through all of the sequels.
Emilio Esteves' death scene was shocking when this movie came out for a few reasons. 1. Its probably the most gruesome on screen death in any Mission Impossible movie. 2. Esteves was pretty much at the height of his career in terms of popularity with general audiences at the time (coming off the Mighty Ducks movies, which you mentioned). 3. The trailers made it seem like he would be a bigger part of the movie, only for it to be a misdirect and kill him off in the first 15 minutes.
No the song didn't come from "this", it came from the 1966 TV series: "Theme from Mission: Impossible" (song title) is the theme tune of the American espionage TV series Mission: Impossible (1966-1973). The theme was written and composed by Argentine composer Lalo Schifrin and has since gone on to appear in several other works of the Mission: Impossible franchise, including the 1988 TV series, the film series, and the video game series.
In my opinion MI2 is the weakest of them but worth watching, then they get better. Jack the guy that died on top of the elevator Emilio Estevez is Charlie Sheen’s brother.
In response to what Michael was saying, and I agree with him btw, a very simple fix for the story would be something like, to have Jim about to shoot Ethan but Claire jumps in front of Ethan because she doesn't want Jim to kill him because she has feelings for Ethan as well as Jim, where Claire takes the bullet meant for Ethan, then we can have Jim try to escape in the chopper and get to the ending we got....
I know Emilio estevez as Johnny Collins (Tex), Keith "Two-Bit" Mathews (The Outsiders), J.J. Cooney (Nightmares), Otto Maddox (Repo Man), Andrew Clark (The Breakfast Club), Kirby "Kirbo" Keger (St. Elmo's Fire), Bill Robinson (Maximum Overdrive), Det. Bill Reimers (Stakeout & Another Stakeout), Billy The Kid (Young Guns 1 & 2), James St. James (Men At Work), Alex Furlong (Freejack), Sgt. Jack Colt (Loaded Weapon 1), Francis Howard "Frank" Wyatt (Judgement Night) & Daniel Avery (The Way)...and of course Coach Gordon Bombay from the Mighty Ducks films...
@@MLJ7956 Yes! In the 80s, he was everywhere. There was a brief time when someone might say, "Charlie Sheen and Martin Sheen. You know, Emilio Estevez's brother and father." Also, I liked Men at Work a lot more than anyone should like such a piece of crap movie. 😆
Also the person that you mentioned with the long hair He was in the living daylights Also in fallout it is revealed that the white widow She is the daughter of max From the 1st film.
The first time I saw this in the theater at 12 years old I had no idea what was going on in terms of the plot, wasn't until I saw this movie again years later that I finally understood what was going on with the NOC list and all that
People don't seem to appreciate that the internet was at its infancy in this film. I mean you don't get this sort of stuff in 80s movies. The 90s is where it all started...
It is almost painful to see Emilio Estevez become the Mighty Ducks coach, not any of his other iconic roles (like Breakfast Club), or that he's Martin Sheens son and Charlie's brother.
Oh, we could almost do this all day. Two-bit in The Outsiders. Opposite a still relatively unknown Samuel L Jackson in Loaded Weapon 1. Maximum Overdrive, though that's more infamous. Opposite his brother in Men at Work. Etc.
If I remember, I think there was a bit of a controversy with people who were upset that Phelps, who was basically the “main character” in the tv series being the villain in the movie.
And Cherile sheens real brother. Because thear actual last names are estevez because thear dad changed his last name to get work as an actor. Emillo decided to keep it if that tells you any thing.
And now u know why Brian DePalma is one of the greatest and learned directing from Alfred Hitchcock! Long silences, no cuts, strange weird camera angles, no music, zero dialogue!
Yep. The first two M:I movies are different. The 1st one, this one, is a noir espionage thriller. The 2nd one being made in the year 2000, resulted in an explosive, over the top early 2000 action flick😂
The smartest and best movie in the franchise. This movie is the most loyal to the tv series (both 60 and 80) compared to the other movies. It is not just a generic action movie. It is much smarter than that. Fyi the original actor who plays Jim Phelps Peter Graves Rip refuse to play in this movie because what happen in this movie that is why Jon Voight plays in this movie. You should also see Jack Reacher and Sneakers. The theme comes from the original 60's series and not the movies. Jim shoot Claire because he was jealous and maybe he need Ethan to stay alive and take the blame. I can agree that the Claire death was made in the wrong way, Jim should have tried to shoot Ethan and Claire would distract him enough time for Ethan to take the gun away from Jim maybe then the gun shoot Claire by mistake.
I agree with Peter Graves's decision - making Jim Phelps a traitor was a betrayal of everything in the original series. I was highly pissed off at the time.
I've always seen the movies like a TV series where it takes a few to find itself, the first movie sets the foundation of what to expect in the future. For me I've always seen the second movie as the series only change almost becoming an American James Bond story, but by the third movie we're back on course and things get better and better.
The guy the works in the Langley building that kept going to the toilet used the computer if it went off when Tom cruise was typing on rhe keyboard then it would go off all the time
@@KickinthescienceDefinitely in terms of story. This one felt like a true espionage film. The others just became action movies that tried to one up each other.
I can't believe that they are watching this for the first time. Were they living under a rock all this time? I mean I'm a Pakistani and i watched it like in 2006 or something when i was a kid.
"This is where this comes from? Originally?" Well... yes its the Mission Impossible theme... no not originally this movie. This is a pumped up version of the theme from the 1960s tv series starring Peter Graves as Mr. Phelps. (You might remember Peter Graves as the doctor on "Airplane!")
About the fish tank scene, there was behind the scenes footage - and it was indeed pulled off in one take. Cruise was right in the middle of it. Completely genuine maneuvering in that brief span of time.
It's a trivial little thing...but I really love that the epilogue had Ethan and Luther just sat having a pint outside a British pub...with typically overcast weather. Also...the little hint of diegetic Cranberries playing in the background.
If there's anything more impressive than seeing "Mission Impossible" for the first time, then that's Kristen for the first time 😇😁😍 (actually, every time is like the first time 😉)
Funny enough, Michael was pretty correct, the new Apple M1, 2, 3, 4 chips have their roots in RISC. They're ARM-based, which stands for Advanced RISC Machine. Instead of licensing the tech from ARM itself, they built them in-house.
Great reaction & such a great beginning to the franchise to be - the TV series it is adapted from is iconic and was more or less America's answer to the Bond films in the '60s.
You two work so well together, I am glad you will be doing my favorite movie franchise together. Our oldest son is named after Mr. Ethan Hunt. I loved the sneak peek behind the scenes with Jaby at the beginning, as well. Did Kristen say what I thought she said @ 31:00?! I laughed so hard!
It's an interesting that while the Mission: Impossible movies became international hits, many of the actors of the original Mission: Impossible tv series hate the movies. Peter Graves, along with Greg Morris hated the movies, especially the first movie. Greg Morris played Barney Collier. Ving Rhames character Luther is basically the movie version of Greg's character. Peter and Greg didn't like how Ethan Hunt because the Jim Phelps' character and how the movies are more about action and stunts than what the original TV show and the 1990s TV show sequel represented. The NOC list or "Non Official Cover" list is a true thing in espionage. There have been so many real-life instances of NOC agents being burned for whatever reason and they show up on the news. One of the most well-known Americans that has happened to was Valerie Plame. She was burned in retaliation for what her husband said in an article he wrote about the George H,W, Bush administration and the hunt for Weapons of Mass Destruction due to the 9/11 attacks. It was major news and she testified on Congress about it. It was a very interesting hearing. She ran for Congress in Arizona. Her campaign ad had her driving a Camero while she was talking about how she was a trained CIA agent and that part of her training was in driving. She was handing that Camero like nobody's business. globalnews.ca/video/5879220/valerie-plame-wilson-announces-congressional-bid-with-new-campaign-ad
I agree with you Michael, it’s just like in the scene from Die Hard the villain was falling from the ledge to his death and he could’ve gotten a couple shots off at John hit John both 2 times and the villain smiles as he’s falling to his death. John Bruce Willis’s character is having to fight for his life.
You guys are in for a serious treat. The Mission Impossible movies don't disappoint at all. Some aren't as good as others but overall they're pretty good to watch. My absolute favourite ones are this first one and Rogue Nation. Rogue Nation is so so good, really loved it. My personal opinion is the latest one might be the weakest / worst one (Dead Reckoning) - it still had awesome action scenes and some great moments but overall it didn't grab me like some of the other movies did. However, overall it's still a solid franchise and I think you guys will really love them. :)
Actually Claire wasn't in the car that blew up, that was the one of the other female agents, also the theme song is from the original 60'S tv show where Jim Phelps Is a good guy & the leader of the IMF but was made into the villain in the movie remake, a decision that didn't please fans of the original series & In addition to the Mighty Ducks Emilio Estevez was also in Young Guns 1 & 2, St Elmo's 🔥& Stakeout which I luv.

20:40 He is indeed. Andreas Wisniewski, also plays a baddie in the Bond film ‘The Living Daylights’. He used to be a dancer !
He is not, however, the guy with the long blonde hair in Die Hard; he's the brother with the short hair.
The first time I saw this in the theater at 12 years old I had no idea what was going on in terms of the plot, wasn't until I saw this movie again years later that I finally understood what was going on with the NOC list and all that
People know less about the internet now than they did when this movie came out. My parents don’t even remember what a web browser is.
3 and Ghost Protocol and Fallout are my faves.
Kristen isn’t allowed to have pens anymore😂.
TOM CRUISE = LEGEND
People don't seem to appreciate that the internet was at its infancy in this film.
I mean you don't get this sort of stuff in 80s movies.
The 90s is where it all started...
'Holy crap, that was visceral.' while literally being cerebral.
It is almost painful to see Emilio Estevez become the Mighty Ducks coach, not any of his other iconic roles (like Breakfast Club), or that he's Martin Sheens son and Charlie's brother.
Repo Man.
Billy The Kid (young guns)
Oh, we could almost do this all day. Two-bit in The Outsiders. Opposite a still relatively unknown Samuel L Jackson in Loaded Weapon 1. Maximum Overdrive, though that's more infamous. Opposite his brother in Men at Work. Etc.
Fun fact: Jon Voight isn't acting, he's just playing his true self. He is actually that evil in real life
If I remember, I think there was a bit of a controversy with people who were upset that Phelps, who was basically the “main character” in the tv series being the villain in the movie.
I think the first big stunt he does in Rogue Nation is safer than that knife to the eye stunt
And Cherile sheens real brother. Because thear actual last names are estevez because thear dad changed his last name to get work as an actor. Emillo decided to keep it if that tells you any thing.
These two are my favorite duo for reactions
1st Can't believe you're watching for the first time 😅❤
And now u know why Brian DePalma is one of the greatest and learned directing from Alfred Hitchcock!
There were plenty of over the top action films in the 90s...you need to appreciate that the internet was at its infancy in 1996.
The guy the works in the Langley building that kept going to the toilet used the computer if it went off when Tom cruise was typing on rhe keyboard then it would go off all the time
I never saw Jim shooting Claire as intentional, rather as accidental. Labelling it intentional to complain, is that 'Straw Man'?
The first one is still the best IMO
In terms of action or story?
@@KickinthescienceDefinitely in terms of story. This one felt like a true espionage film. The others just became action movies that tried to one up each other.
Fallout with Henry Cavill is my favorite
31:00 I just laughed sooooooooooo hard OMG!!!!! 😂😂😂
wait till they redo the same trick, in the 7th part, but with a much smaller entity.
The German blonde was the brother from Die Hard. He was the one Bruce Willis killed first.
Michael is THE BEST 💙 Michael and Kristen's energy is so fun to watch! LOVE Michael's excitement about everything 🙌
Agree
Originally the theme song comes from the Mission Impossible TV Show
"He's from the mighty Ducks" I would've thought "The Breakfast Club" first. Or Charlie Sheen's, brother.
Forgot about Young Guns.
@LarryBonson no it's just that would be the first thing I would think of, young guns probably second, but mighty ducks would be the last. Lol
The guy from Mighty Ducks is Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheens half brother, also, Mission Impossible was a TV show in the 60's.
Full Brothers actually.
Yep. Emilio took his dad's real last name and Charlie took his dad's stage last name @@MikeLau-d8l
I can't believe that they are watching this for the first time. Were they living under a rock all this time? I mean I'm a Pakistani and i watched it like in 2006 or something when i was a kid.
"This is where this comes from? Originally?"
Well... yes its the Mission Impossible theme... no not originally this movie.
Also...even at 60, Vanessa Redgrave would have still got it back then 😍
People always forget that Jon voight is Angelina Jolie’s dad
If there's anything more impressive than seeing "Mission Impossible" for the first time, then that's Kristen for the first time 😇😁😍 (actually, every time is like the first time 😉)
Thanks for the reaction, love your channel!!!
Funny enough, Michael was pretty correct, the new Apple M1, 2, 3, 4 chips have their roots in RISC. They're ARM-based, which stands for Advanced RISC Machine. Instead of licensing the tech from ARM itself, they built them in-house.
Continue this series asap, you will be mind blown ❤❤
The Mission Impossible theme is at first from the 60 TV Series, that's why it is so present eveywhere since then in so many movies
Cool to see you guys enjoying this ❤
Wow, thanks for the reaction and hope this series of impossible mission also don't stop in the middle of any part like marvel movies
Kristen needs to finish the MCU!
I'm ready for the rest of the Mission Impossibles now! lol
Yeeeeeeeeessssss I love this Franchise

You guys had each half of the bad guys. Kristen guessed Phelps and Michael guessed Claire. Good jorb! 👍
