  • Here we have yet another Ludwig Acrolite restoration. This one seems to be from the 70s. Pointy blue/olive badge and frosty shell. She came out pretty good! Just had to throw some parts on and give it a quick clean!

    • @BayouMaccabee

Yes, David totally needs to make an ALL snare drums kit. Would be cool if every snare drum is a different size (diameter and depth). They should be played with the snares OFF and then with the snares ON.

As it happens, recently I've been wanting to try a different batter head for my own Acrolite. The Evans coated G1 is just too dry for it. Then today, this video suggestion pops up, and shows me how good the Remo coated Ambassador sounds on an Acrolite. Sold.

Acrolite=desert island snare. I have a very nice collection of classic snare drums, including a WFL Barrett Deems (later renamed Jazz Festival and made legendary by some bloke from Liverpool), Slingerland Krupa Sound King COB, Ludwig Rocker 6.5" and a couple of others. And my 70's Acrolite I got off Craig's List for $80 that was missing a top hoop. I put a 2.5mm hoop on that I had in my miscellaneous bin, Aquarian heads, Puresound wires, and the thing is just amazing, the ideal snare. I actually sometimes avoid racking it up because if I do, I'll leave it on there longer than I want, when I really want to be rotating through the other drums. It seduces me. I had a Supraphonic and it didn't do it for me. I think 10 lugs vs. 8 makes the difference.

Thank you the utilitarian of drums, rdavidr for your Acrolite snare videos. You have made me dig mine out the closet and referb it. It was "the drum" I first learned to play in middle school 30+ long years ago. I looked up the serial number on it and I believe it to be a 1972 model. I almost, not quite, could read the numbers of yours at the end. It sounds great with my DW's.

I'm literally in the process of saving/modding a snare drum too. I bought Tama Metalworks steel snare about a year ago. Shell has nice black nickel finish with chromed lugs. So I decided to buy die-cast hoops in chrome to compliment the contrast. Also, I figured out that Starphonic linear strainer and butt-plate fit the drum, so that'll be a nice upgrade too. I honestly don't know how shell and lugs didn't get a single scratch, because hoops, snare wire and drum heads were completely trashed.

In the early to mid 1980s they switched the finish to what looks like a powder coat that's thicker than the 70s anodized finish. Similar to the Blackrolite (Acrolite with the "black galaxy" finish), the thicker finish tends to muffle the drum and reduce the resonance. I can hear the considerable difference between my '79 Acrolite and my 2013 Blackrolite. Aluminum shells tend to resonate less than steel anyway, so further choking is not always desirable. While they are both great snare drums, I much prefer the '79 model as the drum has more presence. To each their own of course.

Hi David... I just got an Acro for the first time, and the vintage ones come with strainers that only accept string. I see that you added a vintage P-85 onto the drum, and the one you added initially had no way to affix a strap. Then, I see that you have some form of strap adapter added to the strainer. Can you please explain what happened here? I can't even find a strap adapter for a P-85. I can certainly buy a modern P-85 with a strap connector, but you seem to have found a work around or a converter that works for a vintage one.
