This was the Oslo Philharmonic's 60th Anniversary Celebration Concert and Mariss Jansons' first as the orchestra's chief conductor.

Incredible. Mariss is a genius of a conductor. He embodies the music. 7:44 in the first movement is amazing as well as 33:54 in the third movement. It's such a shame that this video has so many ads :(
Maestro Jansons' masterly performance of Berlioz Symphony Fantastic at the Proms stole my heart and his rendering of Strauss "Also Spracht Zarathustra" took it to even greater heights.

Repose en paix maestro. Tu vas nous manquer. Quelle magnifique interprétation ! On entend qu’il a travaillé avec Mravinsky, grand maître dans la direction de cette 4ème de Tchaikovsky. Les chiens ne fond pas des chats. Ce 30 novembre 2019 est une date aussi douloureuse que le 19 janvier 1988, la mort de mon maître, Mravinsky. Ils ne seront peut-être pas enterrés loin l’un de l’autre à St Pétersbourg. Merci du fonds du cœur pour tout ce que vous nous avez apporté. Vous restez tous les deux gravés dans mon cœur.

Oh my goodness, Maestro Jansons in action - one of the greats! I love his conducting style - unadorned, unaffected and precise. A pure, heartfelt musician who focused on the music alone, minus the theatrics so common with today's current crop of conductors. I'm becoming increasingly sick of baton wavers who are obviously theatrical without adding substance. Here in Houston (sorry Frankfurt) we have dramatist-extraordinaire Andrés Orozco-Estrada who (were he to study gymnastics someday) would clearly add a somersault or two and a back-flip for good measure during a performance of Barber's Adagio for Strings, since the work would be otherwise too dull for his tastes.

Realmente este es un gran material: un joven Mariss Jansons dirigiendo sin partitura la Cuarta Sinfonía de Tchaikovsky con aquella Orquesta que condujo a ser una de las mejores. Es un registro de gran calidad y creo que es inseparable la calidad humana a los resultados artísticos: sin duda el Maestro Jansons fue una gran persona y gran músico. Qué descanse en paz.

R.I .P Mariss btw the whole symphony was dedicated to Madam Von Meck his patroness at the time. The 3rd movement depicts life in a street with a drunk staggering around the 4th movement based on a folk tune.

Nice Memories. Mariss Jansons opening concert as chief conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in September 1979. How do you set the tone as a 36-year-old. In his early years Jansons had something of Carlos Kleiber and in his later phase as a conductor he became more cautious and more like his teacher Von Karajan. Expressed in periods, before and after his heart attack in 1996. But here he sets the Norwegians on fire with an electrifying version of Tchaikovsky's 4th symphony that sparks off, ✨🎶✨:
This must have been one of his first concerts as music director of the orchestra. This is such an intersting video. I think there are still one or two musicians still playing in the orchestra today?
In my opinion Marriss Jansons was the Marcia Gay Harden of music conductors. Very talented in his/her craft but would never either seek publicity or indulge themselves in any fame like the typical primma donnas like Karajan, Bernstein, Reiner, Dummel, etc.

I am not an adherent of Scandinavian performances. As a whole I struggle with their dryness and lack of power and variety. This is not the case in the present performance here. All the cheap showman's tricks like exaggerated ritardandi and other devices that devalue many other famous performances are not even considered here. By performing the first movement in a steady, even tempo, Janssons brings out its massive scale. It's very fine music that would such as, would I like to think, even the hypercritical great master would have professed to be, "after all, a satisfactory performance."
