  • This is a shortened version of the 1947 "LORAN for Ocean Navigation" filmstrip produced by the Coast Guard as a sales pitch to commercial shipping lines to adopt LORAN (as a both a navigational aid and to assist in distress situations). Updated with a new narration track in place of the distorted period track, the film provides a brief overview of the operational theory behind LORAN.

    Always wondered how Loran worked. I'm sure this was super hi-tech in it's day but when you think about how much more accurate GPS is it's no wonder the USA doesn't even bother with Loran anymore. There used to be a Loran tower where I live in south Florida and as a kid I remember always wondering how Loran worked back in the 1970's.
    Loran served it's purpose during it's time but technology marches on.

      +Randy Evans Surprisingly, they are bringing back an updated version of LORAN as a backup to GPS in ports.

      +Randy Evans GPS is LORAN, LORAN is GPS (main difference is Frequency, not operational theory). Notice how there is no accounting for any Earth-spin induced Doppler effect in this animation (and nor is there in any radio or RADAR triangulation system in use today - ask me how I know). Ask yourself...Why? Your brain and your life-long indoctrination through both media and school may make it difficult for you to really understand what I'm saying here, but I know people who worked on LORAN II and other similar systems, and have/had family members with some of the highest clearances in the Intelligence community. They don't want you to think about this question or ask to many related questions...but the truth is coming out anyway, and I have some confidence that a fuller disclosure surrounding these phenomena (and related ones - like the deceptions pulled off by NASA, etc.) is forthcoming. Why, I don't know, but THAT they are coming...I'm quite confident.

      +StopMoColorado LORAN is NOT GPS sorry, I am studying navigation. They are similar, but not the same thing. LORAN uses TDOA principal, whereas GPS - TOA. GPS is global, LORAN - is not.

    • @StopMoColorado
      @StopMoColorado 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Игровой канал RobosergTV "GPS" most definitely has its roots in LORAN (GPS signals are higher-frequency, for one)...this is even demonstrated in the "credits" for GPS, which refer to LORAN, and other unspecified DoD technology. GPS is most definitely NOT global...just watch 24/7 Flight Tracker over the South Pacific, or listen to NASA scientists explain that the Orion launcher loses contact with Houston over the Indian Ocean...I won't waste too much time with this, anyone who's curious can do more reading on the topic. Your local cell tower is helping to spoof the GPS signals...there are apps that can help you find them (a bit tedious, but possible), you'll soon realize they're terrestrial, not "Geostationary" (which is impossible for more reasons than I care to detail, but impossible nonetheless) and in orbit.

      +StopMoColorado I already told about about the differences. I am having exam tomorrow in "positioning and navigation" and I know better, how LORAN and GPS work. They use different methods, have different coverage etc. They are similar, but not the same.

      @@Volleyball_Chess_and_Geoguessr It was a system used BEFORE satellites, It was a GROUND based navigation system. The TIME difference in radio pulses were used to create a "grid" like on a piece of graph paper that you could determine where you were on land sea or in the air. My father was one of the first teams to develop and install this system in WW 2.Unlike RADAR, the great thing about it was: the radio signals weren't generated by equipment on ships, or planes they were only RECEIVED. That way the enemy couldn't "tune in" or TRIANGULATE your position and blast the hell out of you. You would simply RECEIVE the radio pulses - observe the TIME difference and be able to plot your EXACT position at SEA on LAND or n the AIR, wherever you were.
