  • Never even knew there was a light in here. Sure enough, the bulb was just burnt out. Good time for an LED upgrade eh?

    Thank you! My 4Runner is with me since 2009 and I never suspected the presence of this light. Replaced today. Well done.

    To save you a headache next time, that whole socket disconnects and pulls right out of the glove box with the screen and everything

    Hi Darren how are you! I watched your video regarding glove compartment light bulb and it was awesome! What is the part number of the LED lights?

    • @darrendexter6125
      @darrendexter6125  ปีที่แล้ว

      Any 12V bulb with a T5 socket will work, as long as the bulb part is not crazy large. Start with the ones I linked in the video description.

  • @yakbassin7196
    @yakbassin7196 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A light that stays on in a vehicle would be considered parasitic draw. Your led may not cause any issues but a halogen bulb would most certainly drain your battery if left for an extended amount of time. My best guess is there is some sort of switch that engages and disengages when you open and close the glove box that has gone bad. I can't imagine Toyota would have designed it stay on at all times.

    im sure you already figured out that glovebox bulb is on/off with cluster.

    Thanks for the video, dropping down the glove box like you did, did not work for my 99 SR5. I had to remove the 2 screws at the bottom and pull the whole thing out that way. I was concerned your way I was going to break it because it would not flex enough to drop it down. My question for you or any 3rd gen or 99 owners is: Does the glove box light stay on continuously when the headlights or running lights are on? I did not notice any kind of activation switch when I was changing out the bulb and it only made sense to me that the glove box bulb would burn out due to this because the glove box is so rarely opened.

    • @darrendexter6125
      @darrendexter6125  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the bulb remains ON when the running/main lights are turned on. There is no door sensor to shut it off when the glovebox is closed. Seems silly to me. Good thing its an easy replacement job. LED's should make the job even less frequent.

      @@darrendexter6125 Thank you. I didn't have any luck finding the led bulb locally and the amazon link doesn't show that it is good for the 99 4runner, nor did the dealership have a clue where I had to purchase the original, not that I ever expect them to. I believe my bulb may cross ref to a T1 (Though I'm not 100% certain) not a T5. I had to return a T5 to the parts store, it was to big, other people said that is what they used. . I still want an led but for now this will have to do. Gotta figure out the ash tray light now. Bought my 4runner brand new back in 99 and wouldn't trade it for anything, just never noticed that damn light.

    • @darrendexter6125
      @darrendexter6125  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sandrasmith7960 The link in the video description is the exact bulb I used in my 99'. I can't imagine why a bulb with a T5 base would not fit in yours. Ash Tray light is the same bulb, and very easy. So easy, I didn't bother making a video for that one. If I remember correctly, its on all the time too (same as glove box).

    • @darrendexter6125
      @darrendexter6125  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With your headlights (or at least running) lights turned on, test the voltage at the bulb socket. It should be about 12V. If it is, then there is a connection issue. If there is no voltage, then its something earlier in the circuit.

    • @bran-qt7ds
      @bran-qt7ds 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darrendexter6125 thanks, yeah normally I would have tried already, but since such tiny contacts at such an awkward angle, I was hoping maybe I was just overlooking a stuck switch somewhere perhaps. I agree very wierd that there's no switch apparently. Guess I'll bring out my acrobatic skills and climb under there with a tester and magnifying glass. Thanks.
