  • After a hard day at work, sometimes it's hard to get out into the garage and do what you love. But when it comes to knifemaking, Frank Grissom gets out there as much as he can, as it's his time to be alone and relax. He's also self-taught on CNC, as there aren't a lot of people out where he lives who knows much about CNC. He did take one of John Saunders first CNC classes, and that gave him the confidence to make the purchase of the Tormach PCNC 440 a priority.
His skills at knife making grows every year, but he's very humble and doesn't consider himself a machinist. Anyone who looks at the craftsmanship of his knives will think otherwise. From the Ale-inator bottle openers, to his Tomcat flipper/Grisson Friction Folder and to his Neckers, it's obvious he is a true machinist.

    Nice Work!
Yep, it is nice to think about something and then do the cad/cam work and machine it.
    Makes you smile every time.

Absolutely awesome! I am buying my second 440 this month. It does what I need for a low dollar. Some people forget that old bootstrap concept.

We're very glad the PCNC 440 is working out for you! What do you make with the one you have, and what are your plans for the second one?

@@tormachinc Just to give you a quick background story...My wife and I jockeyed my first 440 down the stairs to the basement where I did my first year machining production runs of nylon parts for Energizer Battery, where the 440 about paid for itself in the first year. Many stories and whatnots btween that made some money, I decided to keep consulting in the design realm and work my day job at an RF power supply company designing components to the semiconductor industry...Now I am creating brass fixtures for brazing eye wear frame pieces together for the longest lasting US eye wear company today and trying to semi-retire from the RF/semiconductor business. This family run USA eyewear company started in 1918 and even made eye wear for presidents. Today as I am typing this, I am working burning the midnight oil to get some complex shapes and contours for fixturing for these future orders. I will be contacting you very soon with an order for another 440 because I don't really need much more to keep doing my job and my old 440 is getting tired. Not buying a Haas, because why? The little 440 does what I need. Thank you, Paul, God bless you.

Perfect application for a Tormach. Tolerances and speed don't really apply, pretty much an art project. Good to see.

How would you say the noise is on this machine compared to a belt grinder? I've found a low grit belt grinder on steel is borderline too noisy for my loft, so I'm nervous about finding a sound solution before I purchase.
