I remember both John's beginnings. Saunders in his apartment in Manhattan and grimsmo in his garage making Volvo parts. Hats off to you guys, thats how you grind it out and make it happen!
Thank you for doing this interview. I couldn't have been more nervous when buying my first machine. Now that it's delivered and almost built, I wouldn't trade it for the world.
Awesome collaboration video. These are 2 of the 3 that inspired me to start my own shop. It's a slow starter, but it will succeed. With enough passion, faith and heart anything can succeed.
Awesome to see these videos Titan, and hearing about the way people got to where they are today, their challenges, their journey, and most importantly the fact that they simply got it and had a go!
I'm still in my barn with my grizz cnc i made like 8 years ago making ice fishing products for fish finders. There was a need for a solution with plastic transducer mounts breaking in the cold. So being a very experienced job shop machinist with 2 engineering degrees.. I set out on my way to make that difference. I'm still going strong if you don't have the will and the strength to learn /fail/and die trying. Making a business work while growing is just not going to happen. Its a everyday struggle not just when you feel like it. I love what i do for a living as well as my home shop. I kind of like being a word of mouth business. Bringing a product to someones hands with quality and high end components with a aww factor. That's what MasterCraft fishing is all about. This industry has made me a great living without a doubt.
I'm really reaching for this goal. Not knife making specifically but hobbyist machining turning into a way to make a living. I appreciate all of this information. I really do.
So encouraging and awesome to hear this story and what's even more encouraging is to hear of a young person that learned and enjoys the machine trade. Being a middle aged machinist who is now evolved in operations I've seen so many come and go. You said it right, its the passion that we have to take a bar and turn it into something to run a studer grinder and measure .00005 stock that you took off. My hat's off to you I hope you do well and as soon as I'm done typing this I will look into one of your knives.
Knife machining is even more competitive than aerospace in my opinion and can be just as hard, you have to be either really really good, or really cheap to be making knife’s, kudos, we just got done with contract for Benchmade and it really had us working hard and showing us our weaknesses, the profit margins are slim, tolerances are super tight, and there is no room for error! They have to be flawless to be acceptable .
I"m facing this exact thing, and honestly I'm so stressed. This hits so close I have tears, I'm scared. As a man I am suppose to be the rock for my family, it's hard. These videos help, but please Titan Pray for me...
I have to agree with other viewer's,,,what an inspiring guy and story,, At 68+ and head too convert our RF-31 to CNC,,,glade I found this,,,Wow,,and my family thinks I should retire,,,No way,,sky is the limit, not over the Hill,,Bear
This was awesome to watch, I’m actually going into making car parts and other odds and ends in a couple years so laying the framework now. It really helps to hear someone got off the ground with that minimal funding. The main takeaway was dead on as well; just tinker and work, find your passion in creation and the rest comes
I enjoyed this! Fantastic example of putting your mind to work :) I work for a small company that makes specialty camera. Super niche market. All of our cnc is tormach. Superb equipment and path pilot is my best friend. 2 mills, 1 lathe, and their new router. The router is my other best friend :)
Estas 2 personas grandiosas me inspiraram para abrir mi empresa de mecanizado CNC em Brasil. Amazing two my inspiration peolple talking about starting.
Great story I personally feel like I can relate big time I’m at the early stages of the machine like John’s, I recently bought a tormach 1100m still trying to learn the processes and a car guy but unsure on product or sense of direction to go In.
You guys , Saunders and Grimsmo are an inspiration for me to star my knife business, i just got my tormach cnc (don't know how to use it) 😂 but I'm here to learn , saludos desde Tijuana!
how was your machining finishes on the knives with the Tormach? I've programmed and ran Haas and older Mori Seiki at my day job but wanting to get started on my own. just trying to figure out what machine to start with. great video!
Love ur videos , love what u do , I've been a machinist for like 6yrs just starting to do HSM , I wanna get my own machine and make my own parts , but it's like the chicken and the egg , which comes first the machine or the work and HOW Did u go about getting name out there and get ur first contract job?
this is mike .I own Tec boring in Michigan. All my employes are laid off. I have a makino .and two cnc devilge boring mills. I do not know how to operate them.I am 56 . I have been a machinist for 40 years. I do not think my employess are coming back. thank you for pushing me to learn .I am intimidated.
You might have passion, you might have some ideas, you even might have space to put your machines (like garage) but since you don't make money how do you survive? That's the point im at.
Doing it on the side of a normal job until you make enough for your savings to carry you over until you do make money.... Working 5-9 after a 7-4 (7-10 after a 6-6 for me) and weekends isnt fun but that's the most reliable way.
This guy did not start from the bottom. I started from the bottom. You know how I had to make my knives? I didn't have a garage. I had to find iron ore and scrape it out with a butter knife. To smelt it down I had to leave it in the sun under a magnifying glass for three days. To form the blade I left it under a busy intersection so cars would flatten it out. I sharpened it with a pencil sharpener I stole from a child at the bus stop. You don't know the struggle. In all seriousness though that's awesome!
Yeah, that or a spare room in an apartment if you can avoid getting evicted The real problem for the bottom line is the cost. Even at 5k, it's not a low bottom, especially for those who are bad at saving money. I'm not even out of my 20s and currently work for shares (or the machines written as securities if the company fails), being able to save 1k/mo due to me focusing on saving and setting up passive income. I could barely start my side-hustle job shop for optical machinery prototyping and even 2 years and 600k down the hole, i'm just starting to break even on that.
No matter the field, it's all about passion. Passion will drive you to success every time!
For someone looking to start a business, investing time and money in CNC is probably more useful than college these days.
I remember both John's beginnings. Saunders in his apartment in Manhattan and grimsmo in his garage making Volvo parts. Hats off to you guys, thats how you grind it out and make it happen!
Blood, Sweat & Tears... the elixir of success ! Hard work, patience & POSITIVE ATTITUDE ! Thanks for sharing John & Titan !!

It's cool to see Titan will even take his time to talk to small machine shop owners shows he really cares about the trade 🤩
you two are an example to follow, a real inspiration!
Congratulations to both of you

2 of my favorite makers in one video =)
Any chance of you making videos on heidenhain controls? No one does videos on that so it's a big gap you could fill

Great video. I have always admired the start from the bottom story with him.
That's an awesome collaborative video!
Two of my fav creators of all time!

Looking at getting my first machine this year. Haas had some very nice offers out now...

How is the Tormach in comparison to your other machines. Durability, rigidity ect

Thank you so much for this!
Very inspiring video! 👍

Can the CNC make Ford Model A carburetor bodies? Tillotson Zenith and Marvells?
Super inspiring!
Big up the Grimsmo Bros!

John Saunders next
@6:03 the ?
I love the thought, people buy cars but they are not willing to invest in themselves.
I would never be where I am today if I never invested in myself.
That's why you don't have a car.
@@danl.4743 I see...we have a keyboard tough man
Have respect....not for me...for yourself!
@@danl.4743 You must be a car lover.....how is that career going?
@@ShaneWelcher Which career?
“Grismo”
3:05, nice pun lol
Cool video
I am a microtech freak. I'm going to have to get a knife from this dude.
Grismo.
Shit that's where I know you from paintball.
Danm having a garage is the bottom lol
Yeah, that or a spare room in an apartment if you can avoid getting evicted

What i want to know is why people pay 1000 dollars for this guys knives?
At least 900$ for a pocket knife? I’ll pass.
Cool guy but what an ugly and useless knife, damn
