    I have a 6 month old colony of Camp. Herculeanus, currently in hibernation. Started with one Queen and now have 6 workers too - I guess this means I should be expecting another 20 or so workers next brooding season if I take care of them as well as you have. I am interested in any advice and such if you wish to contact me, as a more experienced keeper of the species. Thanks for the video :)

      Hi! If you have 6 workers after a half of a year it was a good start and you have cared about them well! Some wait even longer for their first workers.
      What can I say more.. hmm.. They will require "hibernation "during winters (at least 3-4 weeks; mine went on a balcony last year,but I've missed a good season without freezing temperatures this year, so I will have to hibernate them at the beginning of spring). Without said hibernation the colony will start "stagnation" a long period when they will do completely nothing. It may last a half, or even a full round year.
      As for the food, mine like to eat a lot of honey and Tenebrio molitor larvae. I give them also some juices if I happen to have some (tomato, apple, beetroot etc) and paprika (sweet one).
      I did them a decent formicarium with sand and stones on the bottom, but after a week none of worrkers was present on the outworld. So I changed the "environment" to barky one. Workers (also major ones!) like to walk on branches and the bark and try to avoid non-wooden places. Always there is a few of them sitting somewhere around. Also, if you will do a cork nest (like me), carve all the chambers by yourself and leave almost nothing of the cork. Mine ants just dug inside it and I didn't see the queen or the brood from.. 2-3 years? Do not make the same mistake (unless you wish to give them freedom) ;)

    Hi, yesterday the wind knocked a terra cotta pot off my balcony railing, and it shattered. I was really surprised to find a single giant ant in the dirt when I was potting it back up. She fell out of the root ball, and was walking around and moving her head around in the dirt like she was looking for something. Well, I learned that she is a new queen, a carpenter ant. I felt so bad that her home had been destroyed, but I did not see her eggs in the dirt. I put her in a jar with some dirt. How can I help her to lay more eggs so I can start an ant farm?

      Did she layed eggs already? Or maybe u let her escape?

      wow, nice catch :D Ants move their head around when they try to search the way (i.e. by pheromones). Carpenter ants have a quite good sight; they (especially queens) can also overreact when disturbed (at worst, eat their own brood!).
      If she had eggs before, she will need some proteins to lay new eggs and raise this ones. By proteins I means.. bugs ;p You can buy some mealworms and.. cut them on half - but if I will you I will be careful with this (you know, to not disturb queen much). This meay be disgusting for the first time, but trust me -this will pass :)
      Also, put her in a test-tube/syringe filled with water to its half and lay it in dark and calm place (see how to prepare a test-tube for ants here -> Keeping ants - preparing test-tube // probówka "krok pierwszy" ).
      I don't know where do you live, but our middle-european Camponotus ants need to be overwintered (because they have specific biological clock; you know, winter with 0 up to -20*C ).
      My english is limited -as you can see, so if you have more specific question see
      antfarm.yuku.com/ - english forum for myrmecologists and fans of ants :) they will help you with everything :)

    i would think that this are not camp.herculeanus - i think that they are camp.ligniperdus. because of the rounder "gaster" and the the orange body of the workers... but very nice video and song :)

      +Ken2it C. ligniperda have red spot that extends from front "plate" of the gaster to its sides and top. These ones do not have mentioned dot :) They are also a bit smaller.
      Orange body color appears only in case of nymphs (young workers)

    • @margarettaization
      @margarettaization  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ClashWithHunt they are usually in a dark place, far away from windows; Camponotus queens seem to not like any lights and always try to cover somewhere in shadows :)

      Różne mrówki mieszkają w różnych środowiskach i regionach kraju; najlepiej byłoby najpierw zerknąć co się teraz roi (najpopularniejsze gatunki: formicopedia.org/mrowki/Terminy_r%C3%B3jek), a potem poczytać opis tych mrówek, gdzie mieszkają i jakie warunki środowiskowe lubią (np. czy są to mrówki termofilne [znaczy, że lubią wysokie temperatury, co za tym idzie, będą to tereny otwarte, z niską lub suchą trawą itp], dendrofilne i etc).
      Takie informacje idzie uzyskać albo na stronach (jak Formicopedia, Antmania, Myrmeblog, o mrówkach albo w publikacjach typu "The Anst of Poland" - tą ostatnią da się legalnie uzyskać na stronie: www.antcat.org/references wpisując w wyszukiwarkę słowa "ants poland 2002" i klikając w link pod słowem "PDF"

    so year and half only 25 workers?

    • @zielonamrowka493
      @zielonamrowka493 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually, that's how they develop (rather slow). You have to add also two stagnation periods for a few months total (queen were eating her eggs for almost half of the year before first worker ever finally emerged after overwintering the queen). Workers also develops very slow (almost two months).

      @@zielonamrowka493 I see. i guess i won't have to get a formicarium for my c. herculeanus colony of 4 workers until next summer. Maybe even the following spring.
