Hi Leonard. I live in Montreal and it's not that complicated. I fill up with Super (no ethanol...), put a tender on the battery and push it back and forth once in a while. Mousetrap with peanut butter takes care of rodents. And professional service once a year. Voila. Enjoy the ride.
Ok, gonna disagree (to a point) with the whole deal about “letting it run for a few minutes doesn’t do a thing but drain the battery”. If you let it run LITERALLY 2-3 minutes, yeah, that doesn’t do anything helpful. Cranking it up every 3-4 WEEKS and letting it run for at least 15 minutes and getting to operating temperature does a lot to help. Besides the fact that running that long will charge the battery back up, even if you have a battery tender, this not only keeps everything lubed up to where things like piston rings don’t start to rust to cylinder walls, and other moving parts may want to stick, but it also allows for any condensation in the oil to heat up and evaporate. And yes, it doesn’t matter where you live, you’re going to get condensation in the oil from temperature changes.
I tend to start my bike at least once a month and let it idle for 10 or 20 minutes anyhow. Let it heat cycle and charge the battery. Makes me feel better.
