You maybe think you have something "modern" in your head, when in fact, it's just the same power struggle it ever was, with various pro in-group and anti out-group talking points, in this case (referring to location and time period) coming from various minorities in the US, against "whites" (themselves a broad group).
They fought, lost, and were replaced by technologically superior foes and greedy native allies ready to pounce on weaker tribes. Just the same as the Saxons, the Alemmani, the Picts, and the Carthaginians.
As if that has any relevancy. Taking a moral stand in the moment isn't some how directly related to immoral choices made by ancestors that came before. Is that how your morality is governed? You act with immorality because your ancestors did the same? The writers didn't go in your direction because it would've sounded petty and ridiculous.
