Hey Man! I just got a sony handycam and i have a bunch of cables but cant seem to get it to work in quicktime like you have in the video. I dont have any option to select a video source it just gives me an option for all my audio drivers etc. I have the star tech cable video capture as well but I havent tried that on my PC yet as i would like to have an option on my mac

hey man, i got a sony dcr-trv 510 and a 520, with doing step for step what you are doing with a similair set up (i only need the DV out from the cam to a apple firewire to tunderbolt adaptar) with a macbook pro I7 intel core on the mojave 10.?? trough the quickfire video recording option. now every random allotted amount of time that passes by 5-20 ish minutes, as my camcorder keeps playing back my quickfire just stops the recording with an error message along the lines of "could not fullfill action recording stopped". did this also happen to you and if so how did u fix this?

Firewire to USB cables or converters do not work. You need a firewire to firewire cable, and a firewire receptor on your laptop or desktop. I spent about $40 for a firewire PCIe express (only Texas Instrument chipset) online, plugged it into my son's PC, and it worked.

@@isaacmijangos Yeah you have a Digital8 one so those and the Mini DV ones usually come with firewire but the Video 8 and Hi8 ones don't usually. You can get certain Digital 8 models which are reverse compatible with video 8 and hi8 playback, so it's a handy way to digitise and get best quality over firewire, using it as a cassette player

It does however record onto Hi8 tapes if you like but you only get say 60 mins out of a 90min hi8 tape, or 40 mins out of a 60 min hi8 tape or something like that ratio. It's in the sony manual
do NOT use firewire to USB! firewire and USB are totally incompatible with each other, and the footage will look significantly better if plugged into an actual firewire. a typical firewire PCIe card for a desktop only costs around $20.

This video is mislabeled it should be transferred from DV cam. Hi8 is something different. The cameras dont have digital outputs (firewire). What a waste of my time. You should not call tape film. Video tape is uses a magnetic process. Film uses light to record images. You're perpetuating misnomer or something 🤦🏿♂️😂😂 Label your video correctly, at the very least.

It will play digital Hi8 tapes that were recorded with it or other Digital 8 camcorders. It will not playback analog 8mm or analog Hi8 tapes.

from my experience, and all the cables I used (took several weeks), the cables I used were the ones that worked for me.

Make sure you aren't too close to your Wi-Fi. It can cause interference with older equipment. I had that problem.
