      The nebula doesn't use the actual galaxy-class saucer, it uses a substantially down-scaled version. Just compare the ships' widths, widest point by far for both ships is the saucer, but the nebula is 318m wide to the Galaxy's 464m.

      It was originally conceived as a much smaller contemporary design to the Galaxy, but in something of a frigate scale. The Phoenix incident is one of the reasons why I hate it when people dismiss Star Trek ships, specifically Starfleet, when discussing firepower. People who view Starfleet ships as only being "Explorers" and therefor not worthy of military discussion clearly underestimate their capability. Starfleet technically classifies their ships as ships of exploration, but Starfleet serves as the primary defense of the Federation and they're surrounded by hostile Empires who do in fact purpose build warships and conquer civilizations around them. The fact that these military grade battlecruisers and warbirds all think twice about engaging a Federation ship in battle should clue you in to how powerful they really are.
    The Phoenix was equipped with the AWAC sensor and was pursued by a Galor-class destroyer who was armed with the Phoenix's prefix codes. They disabled her shields and successfully hit her with her shields down and this Nebula-class was still able to outperform the destroyer, successfully destroying it and then their primary target. That's pretty impressive if you ask me. A ship of exploration with a sensor pod, (didn't even have the extra firepower afforded by the triangular torpedo pod), was able to destroyer her attacker, even when the attacker had the tactical advantage. Don't underestimate the Federation or Star Trek in general.

      To be fair, Cardassian technology was more than a little behind the Federation, and one shouldn't neglect the fact that the Phoenix was also captained by a combat hardened and experienced veteran of the previous Cardassian War. If I were Cardassian, I wouldn't like those odds.

    • @dojokonojo
      @dojokonojo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The one that that always confused me when I watched that episode as a child was they never showed any crew from the Phoenix other than Captain Maxwell so little dumb me though Maxwell was defeating all those Cardassians by himself with a fully automated ship. I was like whoa, the Nebula class is badass!

    • @russmiddleton5486
      @russmiddleton5486 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But they don't design or operate them as warships; no anti-flash gear for the crew despite consoles turning into fireworks at regular intervals (or any other kind of protective clothing either), crew standing at tactical stations not sitting in seats wearing 5-point harnesses (inertial dampeners also seem to have a short MTBF), the bridge in a 'shoot here to disable the ship' position, no CIC or ops room, families on board, a bridge whose layout is there for cinematics rather than efficient operation of the crew...

      @@sparrowlt It has been mentioned for years. Someone calculated the volumes at 234,928 cubic meter Constitution versus 217,770 for the Miranda class.
      What is rarely mentioned is NX is almost having volume equal to the original Constitution and having much smaller engines, giving it a greater usable volume for a much smaller crew.

    • @3Rayfire
      @3Rayfire 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I always felt it was precisely the Galaxy's Miranda class cousin.
      @@Euripides_PanzThe NX has more volume than the Constitution? Fascinating. I think I understand it as the NX has eight decks but a wider saucer section, but does that account for the volume of the Stardrive section as well?

    • @Euripides_Panz
      @Euripides_Panz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@3Rayfire Not more, just more usable volume. Constitution has greater total volume, but a larger fraction of it is dedicated to the more powerful warp engines.
      NX has a more bulbous dorsal structure given the hull a greater volume, in spite of the forward notch. It also adds a similar structure around the bridge that Akira has.
      One thing the Constitution doesn't have is the twin catamarans that run half the NX length. Because early Starfleet ships had problems balancing high-warp field, NX also had a structure referred to as the Symmetrical Warp Governor. On the actual Akira, this volume was raised to give it a clear line of sight, as it's sole purpose was a platform for multiple torpedo launchers.

I believe a full tactical warship style variant based on tech designed for Akira and Defiant class ships is warranted and needed.

    • @Euripides_Panz
      @Euripides_Panz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, if the DS9 TM is to believed... heh... it was likely outfitted with at least 1/3 increase in offensive capabilities and uprated engines. Who can speculate what they did with the structural integrity, sensors, power generation, and hull shielding. They were beginning to study captured Dominion technology, which was more advanced.
      If you take impressions from "Message in a Bottle" a Nebula was sent to catch the USS Prometheus, designed to travel faster than any Starfleet contemporary. Not only did it catch up, it obviously threatened Prometheus, causing light damage before it was disabled in a MVAM attack pattern.
      In a less sophisticated attack pattern, the Prometheus just as quickly obliterated a far larger Warbird despite having been damaged heavily by both Romulan and Starfleet weaponry.
      Also, the more agile Akira withstood a brief engagement with three Warbirds on spite of its larger size and reduced agility compared with the two Defiants.
      Based on those impressions, the Nebula and Akira are very capable when appropriately crewed.

    • @calderhall1794
      @calderhall1794 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A full warship nebula is too small to be a true battleship and too big and too crew heavy (by federation standards) to be utilitarian in a pure warship role. Her true value is in the fact that she is a lighter cheaper galaxy and can preform multiple roles well.

    • @cptgofer1acb377
      @cptgofer1acb377 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@calderhall1794 im not sure i agree. With post-Dominion War tech a Nebula should have a smaller crew (albeit not in a substantial capacity) but also her size should allow for more advanced modularity and retrofitting. The sheer size of the Nebula could provide ALOT of room for advanced tech regardless of role. Slap on the right dorsal pod and she could be a heavy scout, long range tactical coordinator, seige vessel, medical ship, or whatever the federation requires. Being as big as it is it could supplant or compliment the aging Miranda's.

    • @f38stingray
      @f38stingray 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What actually is the weakness of the Nebula compared to the Galaxy? Internal volume actually looks fairly similar even though the Nebula is a lot smaller. Even dismissing the modular part, the rest of the space should be similarly reconfigurable like a Galaxy.
      The main thing I see design-wise is no line of sight between the nacelles, so presumably it should be slower, but actually very peak speeds both look like warp 9.6.

      In terms of engines and mass, the two are roughly equal. It's likely Nebula is slightly smaller, perhaps giving it an edge in acceleration. We haven't actually seen a Nebula out-turn anything as large as the aging Ambassadors.
      It's the Akira that combines heavy weapons, good defense, and sharper maneuvers. It probably comes at a cost of range and endurance, likely a great deal of multi-role capacity.

      Actually, funny thing is that its pretty much the same between the Galor and Keldon class ships.
      The Galor is something the Cardassians had for ages, and by itself it was a bit underwhelming, thus being typically used in squadrons or fleets.
      The Keldon on the other hand was a Galor plus, essentially sharing most of the spaceframe, except for the addition of a dorsal superstructure, with the ship being supposedly significantly stronger than the Galor class, but, apparently also much more expensive, leading to only a limited number being produced, being usually used as either flagships or handed over to the Obsidian Order.
      Curiously, during the Dominion war the Keldon class practically vanishes, with most examples (probably all that were with the Obsidian Order) having been massacred in the Omarion Nebula, along with the Tal'Shiar Warbirds. With their Dominion overlords in place, its very likely to assume that they would have wanted to have them produce Dominion ships, and they generally did, at least in the ship yards they brought themselves, but Cardassian Galor and Hideki class ships remained in production. Reasons for that can vary, though its probably either that Dominion ship building techniques were incompatible, or that switching production to Dominion ships would have meant a drop in production output due to extensive retooling. However, given the drastically improved performance of the Galor class, its likely that the Dominion at least provided upgrades to the design nonetheless.
      Now, why wasnt the Keldon being produced during the Dominion war? I assume heavily that its because its a counterpart to the Galaxy class. Technically performs well, has impressive specs, but, like a Tiger tank, is overcomplicated, difficult to produce, and by the end of the day the expense didnt warrant the increase in performance, especially with a focus on fleet operations, where you can just spit out that many more Galor classes and have more boom for your buck. If the Cardassians had been left to their own devices, they might just continue spitting a few out, perhaps as a prestige project, or as a ship for exploration or to command fleets, before production would peter out. But they joined the Dominion, got dragged into the war, and the Dominion wouldnt accept anything less but the absolute maximum boom for the absolute minimum amount of buck, as is their own practice with Jem'Hadar attack ships.
      And this turned into way more of a rant than I intended.

    The Miranda proved itself to be aging at this point. Thus Starfleet needed a new workhorse, one that would as tough, as it would be reliable. Enter the USS Nebula, the mother of a new facet of workhorses Starfleet needed.
    Personally, I LOATHED this design at first, but it's grown on me quite a lot and honestly, I'd be proud to serve aboard one of this class as much I would a Galaxy. The Nebula, and all subsequent of the class proved their worth again and again. Honestly, she even deserved her own hero ship story in Trek itself. Godspeed to this magnificent class.

    There really should be a general Classification for the "Miranda style" ships of StarFleet.
    I've always preferred them to the longer more fragile looking main hero ship Constitution/Galaxy class ships (the Excelsior gets a pass because of its muscular neck).
    They have a pragmatic look to them.
    It could be argued that the later neckless primary hull attached directly to the secondary hull look of the Intrepid and Sovereign class is a sort of blending between the designs.
    Although I would like to see a four nacelle variant, but that could almost be what the Prometheus class is (without the multi vector attack mode…). A blend of the two styles would be awesome.

    The Nebula-class was originally conceived as a much smaller contemporary design to the Galaxy, but in something of a frigate scale. As it turns out, Ben Maxwell, Captain of the Phoenix, commanded the USS Rutledge. The Rutledge was a New Orleans frigate which was built from a smaller scale Enterprise-D model. It has the distinction of being in more incarnations of STAR TREK than any other Starfleet ship.
    Besides the variations on modular equipment pods, the Nebula has variations on the engineering hull. The earliest seen were of the physical model, which featured the Slackjaw Nebula appearance. Following First Contact, the CG hull resembles a truncated Galaxy hull.

    3:14 - That is not entirely true, the Cardassians where invaded by the Klingons because the Klingons thought the Detapa Counsil was overtaken by changelings. So the Klingons destroyed most of the Cardassian Union and therefore Gul Dukat was seeking 'safe haven' with the Dominion. He also knew that he could not count on the Federation because the Klingons were still allies of the Federation. The Cardassians could not turn anywhere BUT the Dominion. And of course the Dominion saw this as a perfect opportunity to get a foothold in the Alpha Quadrant. Let's just say that if the Klingons never attacked Cardassia they might never became Dominion members. But we will never know for sure, because of this line Dukat said to Kira "In the last months I have been secretly negotiating with the Dominion". You might wonder how long he had done that, and if this was even before the Klingon invasion. What also strikes me odd is the fact the Dominion took Cardassia into their fold because the Female Changeling once said to Garak "Cardassia is dead, the moment your people attacked us, you sealed your faith", so.......I think Dukat must have been in some tough negotiations to get this done.
