Bells on milk cows was a common practice in this country too. I have the cow bell my Grandparents used on their cow. It’s not as fancy or loud as the Swiss versions but would do the job. You milk cows generally twice per day so you have to know where to find them in an open grazing situation. If they don’t get milked it can be painful for them and soon enough they’ll dry up and not give milk again until they have a calf. I think you said in that wind that you discovered that you were off trail and had to get back on the route? Beautiful country and I would assume they are moving the cattle to new pasture or possibly back to a facility where they can treat them for worms and give preventative shots, as necessary, for that area and time of year.
@@wanttogo1958 All good observations! I've been surprised I haven't seen them going to or from a milking parlor. That's probably a function of what time I'm actively hiking. I've been thinking about some remote pastures & the huts that apparently are there to milk the cows. But, once again, I haven't seen evidence of farm workers at them. I was also wondering about the electricity for milking machines, refrigeration, etc. Perhaps there is no refrigeration as all this milk is just made into Alpkäse. Still, milking by hand would take too long for the size of these herds.
@@feralhikes8898agree that the herd sizes you have shown in some of videos would indicate they would need to use a mechanical milking system. Interesting for certain.
@@h-lorolltide92 I've been wondering if they go deaf, or at least deaf in the tone of their bell. I also just had the chance to left one: they're heavy!

Those waterfalls are INSANE! I feel badly the cows have to wear those giant, loud bells. It's a shame they can't just graze in peace.

Yes, you are on quite an adventure. I imagine the descents must be brutal.
@@danidaskam1027 Some have been steep, but most are not. The descents do a number on my legs & joints, though!
