If the crown was a threat to him Raphael would never have been able to lay his hands on it, and if he did regardless, it would be because Asmodeus allowed as much.
I had an ending where I killed him and Gale became the god of ambition. Raph still thanks me, but for different reasons. I think it depends on your choices throughout the game.
Raphael still appears in most endings even if you kill him. I'm uncertain whether it's implying that he's canonically still alive or just a fourth wall break judging the player in the end.
Everyone nominating and gushing about Astarion performance but I think this the VA for Raphael deserves it just as much. Omg it's so good. As much of a villan as he is I just want to here him talk all day
A lot of players haven't progressed far enough into the game yet, so Astarion takes the cake just by being one of the first companions you meet, being well known among the playerbase. Raphael only appears here and there, having around 30 minutes of screen time total

I absolutely adore Raphael's VA work, but he only has the opportunity to shine at villainy, manipulation and anger. Astarion's plot allowed for those, as well as anguish, vulnerability, joy, and his brand of manipulation was more diverse and communicated differently depending on player choice. Sorry but, if you are only taking one university course, getting 100 on that isn't going to be as noteworthy as the person who does the same on a every subject pulling a full workload. Doesn't matter who got the results in first.
Asmodeus *might* let Raphael usurp Mephistopheles. He could appreciate ambition and strength, although he would be angry that the lawful method of him making an Archdevil wasn't followed. But the minute that Raphael enters another of the circles of Hell, one of Asmodeus' Avatars will pop up and turn his spine into a hat. I could imagine him growling "ONE circle of Hell per Archdevil! Those are the RULES!" as he plants his foot firmly somewhere between Raphael's spleen and colon. Asmodeus is Lawful Evil, and Hell has rules that must be obeyed. Contracts and obedience to law are important. Asmodeus is a Greater God, and only Ao or a combination of other Greater Gods could defeat him. He holds the Pact Primeval, and through it ascended into Godhood. He literally invented the concept of punishment for breaking the law. Raphael steps outside of Asmodeus' laws, and he will be receive an eternity of torture the likes of which mortal minds cannot comprehend.
I can’t wait for the DLC, I imagine we might able to actually be able to help Raphael in his conquering of one of the planes. I would LOVE a high level campaign to play like that.
Admittedly in many lores devils and demons resurrect after being killed, as what happens with the demon tasked with killing all of the cultists in Shar's temple after you kill him; ofen requiring more to be killed permanently. Or it could just be a bug. Probably that.

If Mephistopheles had the crown of Karsus just chilling in his basement, you’d think he’d use it to overthrow Asmodeus at least ONCE in the last, idk, THOUSAND YEARS. It’s clear to me that a devil has no greater control over the crown than Karsus did. I think Asmodeus will be dramatically humbling our favorite cambion soon.
Not to mention that Raphael wasn't listening to his own speech. "Ambition burns its owner", he says, yet he clearly think that that doesn't apply to himself. I suspect you're right; Asmodeus is a MASTER strategist and schemer. If the Crown truly were a threat to his rule of Baator, there is NO WAY he would have let Mephistopheles hold onto it. I believe Asmodeus (and probably most of the deities) know that the Crown is somehow flawed, that it cannot DO what Karsus and everyone else thinks it can. So Asmodeus is simply sitting back and waiting for Raphael to try to use the Crown himself and explode himself into itty bitty pieces, the perfect trap for anyone who thinks they might be able to use it to overthrow the Lord of Hell.
i redid the ending to get the epilogue on my first playthrough and at the end this cutscene played but with the variant of you letting Gale return the crown to mystra. the thing is, i KILLED raphael. it is now my head canon that he somehow got revived and we’ll have a level 20 super raphael boss fight in the dlc
SPOILER FOR ROMANCED GALE RAPHAEL SURVIVED . . . . . You can go with him to Elysium in his realm, he offers to help make you a god beforehand. Raphael showed up beforehand, got put in his place by Gale, but shows up later in a similar scene. It says “long after you’re gone,” implying you died and never transcended, that Gale’s worshippers wreak havoc on Faerun
I fully believe that Raphael is the Demon Lord Pazuzu posing as a Devil in order to obtain the Crown. Killing Raphael in his domain should be the end of him... But a Demon, they must be killed in the Abyss.

in one of his monologues he explains that the other archdevils are pledging themselves to him as he's overthrowing zariel with relative ease. idk if it's his arrogance or the sheer power of the crown, but I don't think asmodeus can just brush him off

I was playing Origin Gale, paired with Karlach. I broke the deal with Raphael and killed him. Prior to this patch you could not save Karlach (Even with Wyll present on the dock), as you were forced into the Mystra cutscene. Now you get a full range of choices. You can go with Karlach and Wyll to Avernus, but then you get a post-credits scene where Raphael tells you that you exploded, he got the crown and now owns your soul. If you send Karlach off with Wyll you can then deal with the crown, but at Wither's party you only get a hug, not a kiss from Karlach, who seems stuck with Wyll. There's no way for Gale to romance Karlach and go with her to Avernus, since you'll still explode in six months if you don't recover the crown.
Naw, a relationship wasn't overtly implied. She praises his skill and says they hadn't had much time for talking in Avernus. She claims you haven't seen the last of her and gives you a hug, just as most of the others do, but doesn't mention any romantic longing.
i just finished my first play through and i got this ending and it gave me chills i loved it so MUCH idk what it is about it it’s just so good. i can’t wait to start up a new campaign after doing a 193 hr campaign haha i can see why spider-man lost no chance in hell
I saw another epilogue where Gale has ascended successfully, Raphael shows up at the reunion party and demands the crown, and Gale tells him to come to the Heavens to get it, enraging Raphael. I can't figure out what factors determine one ending or the other because in both endings Raphael is alive and contractually entitled to the crown and Gale attempts to ascend to godhood.
I got this ending yesterday! And I’m not even mad, honestly, I love Andrew’s performance too much. Even more than I hate that Gale died. And I got Raphael’s Final Act even if I didn’t fight him. So it’s fine. He sure is going down on my next playthrough though. I wanna explore Gale’s endings 🤔
I have a feeling Raphael will be the next games villain. It would make a lot of sense because of his own cutscene in the end. This feels more canon then the other endings before the patches adding more to the ending.
I also saw 2 more new Raphael endings. One where you made a deal with him but had Gale give the Crown the mystra and one where God Gale doesn't died and he's looking forward to the Chaos he will bring to the Gods

Found the answer in the datamine - "Gale reclaimed the crown of Karsus but never learned the truth about the orb. As a result, when he retrieved the crown and attempted to wear it, crown and orb reacted badly to each other and the orb detonated, obliterating him from existence." ie if he doesn't find out from mystra in stormshore tabernacle that it's karsite weave specifically, not just netherese, he's fucked
Because he’s a greater god. Ao himself or a collection of greater gods would have to kill him. Even with the crown they’re nothing compared to asmodeus.
I got the ending where I told Gale to retrieve the crown after beating the Netherbrain (Karlach becomes an Illithid Path) and when Raphael show up at the after credits he was beat up and bruise cause I killed him in my run and all of a sudden I guess he escaped from whats his name that rules Hell and gave us this message. Such Goosebumps cause I kill for a Heaven/Hell arc in the DLC Glad they add some aspect of your actions involving with him
Raphael really should have stopped and questioned why his dad kept the crown as a 'museum piece.' All of the archdevils might want to take over Asmodeus but the crown probably wasn't being used for a reason...
I got an ending with him talking about how I broke the pact (he was all bloody in mines) and how I let Gale take the crown to gave it to Mystra even though I left that effin crown in the ocean. So you probably still get a scene with him. That or it's bugged because if you kill a Devil in Hell they die good.

In my ending, Gale gave the crown to Mystra, and this guy shows up MAD, saying it will lead to a "cataclysm". Which...doesn't sound good. The Forgotten Realms have had quite a few magical cataclysms already.
Bruh, this pip squeak thinks he's up to the task of harnassing the Crown of Karsus when a straight up Lord of Hell refused to try to mess with it. I feel like its going to cause in fighting in the hells and give the Abyss an edge in the Blood War.
So, that's bad. The whole part where Gale horrifically died and Raphael is now on the path to conquer the world and then some. But dang is it nice to hear his voice and song one final time.

Sure, Raphael was dead in my playthrough and didn't sign a contract to begin with, but saw someone else who did sign the contract and let him live still have Gale ascend to divinity and have Raphael show up at Withers's party instead

I got an ending with him talking about how I broke the pact (he was all bloody in mines) and how I let Gale take the crown to gave it to Mystra even though I left that effin crown in the ocean. So you probably still get a scene with him. That or it's bugged because if you kill a Devil in Hell they die good.

Raphael's ending is... Foreshadowing or a sign of *"Blood Omen"* in the Nine Hells.
In my ending, Gale gave the crown to Mystra, and this guy shows up MAD, saying it will lead to a "cataclysm". Which...doesn't sound good. The Forgotten Realms have had quite a few magical cataclysms already.
So what is the difference between this end and the end where Gale just straight up dies? What were the different choices made?
Bruh, this pip squeak thinks he's up to the task of harnassing the Crown of Karsus when a straight up Lord of Hell refused to try to mess with it. I feel like its going to cause in fighting in the hells and give the Abyss an edge in the Blood War.

So, that's bad. The whole part where Gale horrifically died and Raphael is now on the path to conquer the world and then some. But dang is it nice to hear his voice and song one final time.

On my epilogue Gale successfully ascends as the God of Ambition. Sure, Raphael was dead in my playthrough and didn't sign a contract to begin with, but saw someone else who did sign the contract and let him live still have Gale ascend to divinity and have Raphael show up at Withers's party instead
