Retired teacher who knits hats for children in need surprised for Feel Good Friday

EastIdahoNews.com and Ashley in Idaho Falls and Pocatello are partnering to honor people in our community for Feel Good Friday. Every week, we surprise someone deserving of special recognition.
We received an email a few weeks ago about a woman named Marty. It said:
Marty retired from teaching school many years ago and was an amazing teacher. After retirement, Marty still wanted to give back to the Snake River schools. She and her husband decided to knit stocking caps for the students in need on the elementary level. Hundreds and hundreds (it is probably over a thousand) of stocking caps have been knitted and donated to the elementary schools over the years.
I have known Marty and her husband for many years, and it was my privilege to be involved because of a chance meeting at Rockford Elementary. Marty and her husband came into the school, where I was employed, when they delivered three garbage bags of stocking caps. I then had the opportunity to hand out these homemade, love-made caps to the children.
As I handed the caps to the children who did not have warm clothing to wear, they would look at me and ask me when they needed to return them back to the me. As I told them that this was a gift, many of them cried and gave was so appreciate that someone that cared enough about them to make their head warm while they were outside in the Idaho winters. It was at that time, many of these children knew that someone cared!
This amazing couple does not ask to be compensated and they do it out of love. Unfortunately, Marty’s husband has not been able to make the caps because of dementia. Marty still knits and donates to the local schools. As I visited with her this week, she stated that she needed more yarn. Marty has touched my life and so many students that I would love for her to have this opportunity as she continues to make a difference in the lives of others!

East Idaho News is a real force for good in their community!
My husband’s grandmother did something similar at her church where she was referred to as the Mitten Lady. Her church pastor let his members know that a church member hoped to receive donations of yarn so she could knit hats and mittens for children in their community. Since she wanted to remain anonymous, her identity was not publicly revealed in church until two weeks before she passed away.
Grandma started knitting for children in the mid 1940’s and continued with this project for the next 50 years. She rarely had to buy yarn because of her pastor’s request for yarn donations. It was a win-win for everyone!
A dear friend of mine, born in 1900, sewed all the time. She saved every scrap for quilts and handmade slippers she donated to an orphanage. Such amazing hearts these women have! 🥰

Bless her and East Idaho News for providing the gift cards so she can continue knitting hats. Most body heat is lost through the head. A hat makes a big difference in keeping warm!

I’d absolutely love to give her some yarn!! I have a lot! Gave my little neighbor girl 6, & still have at least 12, most are large skeins, various colors, how can we donate to her?! If others want to donate to her as well, I’d collect them & take to where ever we can gift to her!!
My guess would be that she donates at least to the elementary school in her area, which is Moreland Elementary in Moreland, Idaho. Perhaps give the school a call to confirm and see if you can send it to them to give to her.

Oh she has looms awesome. I make hats with looms as well and donate. Hospitals need them for preemies so I do them when I'm waiting at appointments and when the box is full I take them in.
