as a young man in india in 1969, i accompanied a student of kumar's to his weekly lesson at kumar's lovely compound in dewas, near indore. we sat in the courtyard on a soft night in the early hot season, just the 3 of us, and sensing our excitement, kumar began to sing with all his heart. hearing the master singing, the servants ceased their chores and quietly came and sat down with us. then his wife came and sat in front of kumar and sang with him. time stood still as we witnessed and experienced this incredible music , all for two young guests and a few servants. kumar walked with us to the gate at the end of the evening to say goodnight, and asking us to wait a moment, disappeared into the garden, returning with his hands full of jasmine blossoms which he gave to us. namaste kumarji, appki yad dil me humesha hoga.
Sam Dill Thank you for sharing the experience. I have heard that his wife was an immensely talented singer too who stopped performing after her marriage. There are no recordings of them singing together available .

I have heard Kumar Gandharva no of times in Pune, Mumbai. I also heard unique combination of trio, Kumar, Vasantrao Deshpande and none other than Bhimsen Joshi,each singing for 3 hours. Kumar 9pm -12.00 midnight then Vasantrao 12.30 to 3 am and Bhimsen 3.30am omwards. People thought who will come at 3.30 am in the wee hours. In fact hundreds flocked at 3.30 am. Bhairavi started at 6.30 am on one side and sun rise on the other in the February chill of Pune….

Sawai Gandharv had a different class altogether that time. My parents home was very nearby from Sawai's location that time in Narayan Peth and we could hear from our home 🎉🎉 blessed....

Please dont belittle Pandit Gandharva by taking AR Rehman name, who only did music for Bollywood and noisy music. Classical music is par excellence divine soul stirring, not salacious filmy music sound.

Really one of the best of Kumarji, especially Shuddha Shyam, one of my favourits. But I do not understand how 6 ragas can be absorbed one after another. Needs to split it. Also no gap between two do not allow to settle in the suras when next starts instantaneously.
