The dialog is awful and It's as if Shyamalan has never heard another human being talk before. Almost all of Bryce Dallas Howard's lines are either confusing or unintentionally hilarious because of how poorly written they are. It's as if Shyamalan is incapable of coming up with anything resembling a natural conversation between his characters, instead opting for long-winded and awkward monologues that ultimately have nothing to do with the plot. It's a terrible movie.

@@MatthewStephensAUAlien³ could have been good, but the studio fought with David Fincher and basically ruined it. They filmed all these practical effects for the alien, and then the studio forced them to replace it with 1992 era CGI. Ripley only agreed to do it if there were no guns, and she got to die at the end. Killing Hicks and Newt was obviously a point of contention. But it had some good stuff, too. The set pieces were great. Also, a decommissioned prison colony where the inmates were all XYY chromosome S.O.'s is a kind of grim setting for a movie with a female protagonist, but of course Ripley isn't afraid of people anymore. The soundtrack was great, I bought the tape when the movie came out. Also, it had Charles Dance and a bunch of great actors. Charles S Dutton from Roc. Pete Postlethwaite. The costumes were good for the prisoners and Weyland Yutani guys. It definitely hurt david Fincher at the start of his career, but fight club fixed it.

This movie is very metaphorical. This group of grieving people were all confronted with evil, and they thought that through their experiences, they understood where evil comes from: From civilization and money and greed. And so they thought, "If we simply make our own place, away from civilization and money and greed, we will not have to deal with evil anymore." Unfortunately, it turns out that their idea was misguided; even in their closed-off society, there was still evil, because (as the movie explains it) evil doesn't come from something outside of humans, it comes from humans themselves: from evil desires, from mental illness, from lies, from things that you cannot escape, as long as there are still people. Dealing with evil turns out to be complicated and defies any simple solution. At least that's what I got from it.
Unfortunately, the "shape" of the story doesn't really fit into the traditional shape we expect of movies, seeing as there's a sort of relaxing of tension more at the like 70% mark than at the end. That, and the audience not liking that they had a trick played on them (believing it was set in the late 1800s rather than modern day) made it relatively unpopular with critics.

I still believe that it's near the ideal society that they created. It's a more happy place than what we have with wars, greed, jealousy and so forth. Sure Evil can arise but most of the time, it's absent. Maybe by creating these monsters, they put fear in people and this allowed them to behave or not look for trouble.

Agreed. I love "Sixth Sense" because of its storytelling (and *such* a great cast in that one, too!)… Actually, this one also for great storytelling, but I was going to say, as someone that loves stories about the unknown and the sense of terror you can get from it (see Lovecraft's short book on horror and fear), these stories form the back bone to so many great stories of fey, creatures lurking, witches, etc. (see also, The Witch for another example, though that one *may* suggest the antagonist is real 😉). More importantly, as a teacher, Hurt's character knew those same stories and they built on that to establish this place of "safety" for them and their families.
Is that aspect of the premise kind of bonkers, perhaps, and yet for the story and how they've maintained the refuge of The Village it's brilliant. Cheers!

They may claim it's love, but parents (especially mothers) claim all sorts of BS is love for her chiyld when it's almost always just to make herself feel better, regardless whether it helps or harms the child.

I watched "The Village" not long after it was released and was perplexed by the negative reviews from critics. It was unfairly dismissed as just another film with a twist, but really the twists aren't either of them that hard to predict but the point is the tension which is developed nicely and the performances which are excellent. It's a solid film with a fantastic soundtrack.

I love the premise of the elders, wanting to pretty much create an honest and good world. A World without sin or evil so to speak. Yet when you look at this, when you look at the elders and the world they created. If you pay attention, almost every deadly sin has worked its way into their supposed perfect Community. Almost every one. Wrath, Pride, vanity, lust, envy, they’re almost all there. Those sins have worked their way into their community without any external forces influencing them at all. I just found this film to be fascinating & on top of all that, I loved the music. This film’s score/soundtrack was amazing. I love this film.

Nice reaction, thanks for watching this great movie.
I don't understand why someone says that the movie is not good after the revealing of the fake monsters thing.
The entire third act is based on the reason why the elders keep the secret. We know about their pain and loss and also why they want to live outside the modern world. Third act is about love and what you can do for it. And the end is pure poetry. A death (Brody's character) keeps the village alive.
Taking about cinematography... Deakins work as DOP as usual amazing. Framing and composition of shots by Shyamalan are so nice to watch. To me, a very good movie.

36:51 Actually no that wouldn't work. Such special, separate places only work as long as the secret is kept. It takes great sacrifice to make such a place work, and most people simply aren't able to knowingly make such sacrifices. As soon as the secret got out, and got spread around to everyone in the village, the village would quickly become either the same as every other place in the world, and therefore no longer special, or it would simply be abandoned by all but just a few.

Someone had already posted summary of a leaked script. I thought it had to be fake because there is no way a movie could have a twist that dumb.

There's a deleted scene in the DVD extras which I definitely think should've been kept in the film. It's when Ivy is walking through the woods and she passes a tree which has lots of pipes hanging from the branches. These are the source of the eerie howls supposedly made by the creatures, caused by the wind blowing through them.
Btw, big shout out to Kevin the perimeter guard! Great acting from that guy. Really comes across as an honest, nice guy who instinctively feels the need to help, despite it endangering his job. I'm glad it was him she encountered! 👍

This is an unusual idea, a monster movie without any actual monsters. It reminds me of a Twilight Zone or Star Trek episode.
The village Elders have been so traumatized by grief that they fled from society, and created an elaborate fantasy to keep their children away from it. But they didn't think about the long term consequences. The children are paranoid and suspicious, and even the smartest of them are ignorant of the greater world. They can survive only as long as they stay in the village, which can only support a limited number of people. What will the next generation do, or the one after that ? (if there is one)

The moral repercussions of such a society would mirror that of a Generational ship travelling to another star system. (there's surely a lot of SF covering this)

It comes down to setting viewer expectations. Brandon Sanderson talks about this a lot in his writing podcasts and in his classes. Subverting expectations is a very fine line to tread, and it's one where the marketing for this movie (in particular) failed miserably. Many like myself went into this expecting a resolution to the "big bad monster(s)"; that payoff never came, making the ending feel anti-climatic, and deflated, like those old TV shows that used to end with "... but it was all just a dream!" It feels like a cop-out. Had it been marketed as more of a love story, I don't think nearly as many people would have been turned off by it.
Imagine if you got to the end of Game of Thrones, and winter never came. Setting expectations makes a huge difference on how people end up liking (or not) a piece of art. If you tell me "Here comes Thing A", and I never get Thing A, I'm going to feel ripped-off as a viewer, unless the subversion absolutely blows my mind.... which this ending did not for me.
