the rescuer's down under was the first animated film sequel that Disney theatrically released. It is also one of the sleepers of the Disney renaissance. people forget that it came out in 1990 between the little mermaid and beauty and the beast and can think it came out during the dark age not the renaissance. Also fun fact: it was the first film to be created fully digitally, using CAPS
And, since we are singing this movie's praises, its the ONLY Disney sequel to be considered part of Disney's main animated canon. And one of the only sequels (in my humble opinion) that not only matches its predecessor....it is BETTER than the first one in pretty much every way....especially the animation.
One thing I only recently realized is actually how long there was between the original Rescuers and this sequel. Like 12 or 13 years? So I'm actually curious why they decided to make a sequel. Was the first movie such a massive succes? Did they always want to make a sequel. But if they did then why did it take so long? Was the audience asking for it? Man, The Rescuers Down Under was a household favorite of mine when I was young and I still enjoy it as an adult. The best and most memorable scene for me was the sequence of Cody and Marahute flying together. It’s a beautifully scene that’s so awe inspiring to watch time and again. I really enjoy this film for its, story fun characters (my favorite being Wilbur), and gorgeous scenery of the outback. A underrated Disney sequel this is.
That movie doesn’t have the recognition it should have!!! It feels criminally underrated. Those scenes with the eagle made me cry when I first rewatch it as an adult. It soooo beautiful and you can’t shake that feeling that Australia is a magical place where amazing creatures live. If at the end you don’t feel the biggest call to save endangered species and the planet, you have no heart 😮
You were correct! There are VERY few circumstances that allow a person to legally own an eagle feather in the United States. _Rescuers Down Under_ was my introduction and familiarity of _The Rescuers_ and pretty much this sequel took this on a whole new level and made it more grand and adventurous than the first film. Looking forward to your reaction to _DINOSAUR_ and while it’s hard to say which Disney film you’ll be doing next following _DINOSAUR_ if it’s classic Disney I recommend _The Great Mouse Detective, Oliver & Company, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Sword and the Stone, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi_ and _Fantasia_ but if you’re doing a CG Disney animated films I recommend _Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, Bolt,_ and _Strange World_
The voice of Percival McLeach was the incredible George C. Scott who is perhaps best known for his roles as General Buck Turgidson in Kubrick’s _Dr. Strangelove,_ George S. Patton in _Patton_ which earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor in this movie, and as Ebenezer Scrooge in the 1984 adaptation of _A Christmas Carol_ which is without a doubt one of the best Christmas Carol adaptations and my favorite George C Scott performances besides his role as McLeach in _Rescuers Down Under_ I highly recommend you watch the 1984 Christmas Carol if you have the chance. @WhiteNoiseReacts Jake was the Australian mouse. I'm so glad you enjoyed this one. The adventure, comedy and tenderness for the animals and Cody in this film was great. The animation was beautiful. And I loved the sweet carryover relationship/ romance of Bianca and Bernard. I believe John Candy was the Albatross voice and Bob Newhart was Bernard.

The lead animator was so concerned with getting the flight sequence with Marahute perfect that he took over the _entire_ set and animated the whole thing by hand. Worth it, the end result is one of the great masterpieces of Disney animation. Breaking free of the ropes, flying among the clouds, and holy _crap_ the shot with Marahute and the birds above the river good grief!
Same, that’s the good thing with the White Noise Reacts channel and how they stand out from the other reaction channels cause literally James and Nobu react to every Disney animated film regardless of the time period and go on and talk about its animation, the voice acting and everything that made those films so good. Apparently they’re one of the few to go through some of the Classic Disney animated films released from _Snow White_ to the films released prior to Disney Renaissance (e.g. The Rescuers, Fox and the Hound, Black Cauldron). Most of the other reactors who react to the Disney animated films usually just only react to the Renaissance films (e.g. _The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King_ etc) the Post-Renaissance films (e.g. _Emperor’s New Groove, Atlantis, Lilo & Stitch,_ etc.) and the Disney Revival era films (e.g. _Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Frozen, Zootopia, Encanto)_ because those are the films that everyone remembers and grew up with along with the fact they have more relevance in terms of Disney related reactions.
This is a favorite of mine. I remember the opening scene where Cody and the Eagle fly off and down towards the stream.. it gave me goosebumps! It's a fun and engaging story..
this was one of my favourites as a kid- i remember i watched it when i was really young and i was convinced golden eagles were actually big enough to ride 😅
That was John Candy doing the voice of Wilbur. Also Wilbur and his brother Orville, who was the Albatross in the first Rescuers are named after the aviation pioneers, the Wright Brothers. The actor who did the voice of Orville passed away before the sequel so he could not reprise his role.
10:09 The fact that the Rescue Aid Society can apparently hack a military computer was something I didn’t understand as a kid, but it just blows me away as an adult. Talk about organized!
This was another of those movies I played a lot as a kid. I also did that to the Brave Little Toaster, to the extent that the tape "wore out" and "had to be pitched."
Outside of being an Australian and growing up with this movie, there's a lot to love about this one. The kid had balls of steel and I'dve loved to see a movie just about him and his adventures rescuing animals. Also, Mcleach is one of my favorite villains because he's a PG version of Mick Taylor, and his truck pisses all over any vehicle in the Mad Max franchise.
RDU for animation and Rescuers for characterization. RDU upped the ante in every possible way although the original has this 70's narm charm that's just so funny to watch - kind of like Robin Hood actually lmao
My mom had a daycare in our home. We finally had a VCR when we were teens (long after all our friends) and the daycare kids got to pick a movie to watch after nap time, right when we were getting home and we couldn't afford many movies. This movie got so much play we had to buy a "previously viewed" 2nd copy from Blockbuster when the VCR ate the first one. The only other repeat rewatch I remember was because one kid would chose the exact same movie every time he got a turn to pick: "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: the Secret of the Ooze".
This movie was actually how I found out there were fireflies in Aus, I never knew we had any, but looked it up and yeah! Not in my region though, sadly. Joanna is a goanna, a native Aussie monitor lizard, hence her name 😂. And I'm pretty sure Jake is a spinifex hopping mouse. The animal they were riding on at one point wasn't a flying squirrel (no squirrels in Aus) but actually a sugar glider, a gliding possum. They are too cute. I think Marahute is based off of the extinct haast eagle, which lived in New Zealand. While huge they were definitely not as big as the eagle in this movie, but were the biggest eagle to ever exist and weighed 15 kilograms (33 pounds). For context the next-largest is the harpy eagle at 9 kg (20 lb). Fun fact, the biggest extinct flying bird is Argentavis from South America, which had a 7m wingspan and weighed 80kgs. So, a little bit closer to Marahute's size! One thing I never really understood in this movie was why name her Marahute, which sounds kind of native American. Wish they'd gone with something from one of the many Aussie indigenous languages.
The reason having rare feathers like that is illegal is cuz a good chance is you got them by killing the bird if you could somehow prove that you actually just found an eagle feather laying around somewhere it wouldn't be a problem
This is the first Disney movie that used the CAPS system, which took away the need to ink and paint cells (which was a time-consuming and expensive task and made it possible to add digital effects such as the opening of this movie. The Little Mermaid had CAPS being used towards the end as a test. CAPS was done by Pixar some years before they made Toy Story.
If you didnt catch the joke/reference btw, the two albatross in these films, Wilbur and Orville, are named after the wright brothers, inventors of the airplane.
This movie was released during the Disney Renaissance, but hardly anyone talks about it, which is a shame, because this absolutely blows the first film out of the water. Gorgeous animation, likeable characters, a great villain, a wonderful showcase of Australia's environment, it's still a personal favorite of mine.
This was the first 100% digital feature film ever made. The animation and backgrounds were done traditionally but all of the coloring, many effects, and the final film printing was all done digitally.
Yup it was done through the Computer Animation Production System better aptly known as CAPS and Disney utilized that system for their next animated films following _Rescuers Down Under_ until 2004’s _Home on the Range_
(At 14:10) You want to know what's ironic? BOTH the albatross's Wilbur and Orville are not only brothers, but they're *both* named after "The Wright Brothers" Also, you can tell the difference between the birds from the last one and this, by the hats they wear.
I love when they have a goofy animal side kick of the menacing villain to balance them. It’s like the opposite of a Disney princess trope lmao and any time Joanna would come on screen I’d die laughing😂😂😂
I watched this when it first came out and when I heard Cody say, "My mom will call The Rangers". My young mind at the time thought, "THE POWER RANGERS?!"
I second Sword in the Stone but next week they’re reacting to Disney’s _DINOSAUR_ and it’s hard to say what Disney animated film will come next following their reaction it could be another Classic Disney animated film or the CG Disney animated films (e.g. Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, Bolt, etc..).
This was my absolute favorite movie as a kid. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I have probably watched it like 50 freaking times my dudes 😅😉👍it’s still great
Wilbur was voice by John Candy. This role and the voice of himself in the childrens cartoon series Camp Candy was the last 2 voice acting rolls John Candy did before his death in 1994.
This movie pops up in my subconscious so much its actually kinda worrying lolol. One of my all time favorite movies. Also, have yall heard of The Brave Little Toaster, and the Land Before Time?
This was the first Disney movie where it was colored and composited digitally, which allowed them to really showcase this with crazy camera moves that wouldn’t be possible with the multi plane camera.
This was one of my favorite disney movies as a kid and I still think it holds up and is very underrated. George C. Scott as McCleash is a great and underrated villain and you gotta love Joanna the Goanna!
I was so excited when I saw you guys were reacting to The Rescuers Down Under. It’s criminally underrated and a prime example of what a sequel should be. It was the first Disney animated film to be completely created digitally. The animation is gorgeous, the soundtrack is fire (did you notice it wasn’t a musical…another rarity for Disney back then) the characters are so much fun and they perfectly captured that sense of danger and adventure. So well-done. It was released on November 16, 1990 (my 5th birthday) which ended up being a huge mistake. It just happened to be the same day a little film called Home Alone was released and blew up the box office. After Down Under underperformed, they pulled all of its advertising and it disappeared. Another fun fact: John Candy, who voiced Wilbur, was also in Home Alone so he had 2 major films competing against each other. 😂 This was also Eva Gabor’s (Bianca) last film before she passed. Bob Newhart (Bernard)…you guys may remember him from Elf. He was Papa Elf! Thank you so much for reacting to this! I love your channel!
I didn't like this movie until I saw a video on here defending it, and when I rewatched it with that perspective, I was really shocked by how enjoyable it is. I think it was a really good idea to go from the original's very centralized, small, almost cramped feeling in * unknown town *, Louisiana, to the epic, grand open spaces of Australia. Some of the animation in this one gets a little outdated, but the music and animation for the flight with Marahute is....truly unbelievable.
I LOVED this movie as a kid, and it still holds a special place in my heart lol I watched this so many more times than the first Rescuers movie, cause the first has such a dark atmosphere, while this one is so colorful and lively. Also Joanna is the f*cking funniest disney creature ever, that scene with her stealing the eggs out of the villains lunch box still has me manically laughing even now as I'm nearing 30 lmao.
There is a reason why this movie is considered not only to be the ONLY Disney sequel that is part of the main Disney canon...but it has the honor of being the second jewel in the Disney Renaissance. I would agree with you gentlemen that this is definitely a soft reboot. The first movie was good. It had a great villain, the girl was cute. This movie took those components and made it 10,000 times more epic. And even though Marahute can't speak, you can still CLEARLY understand her emotions....like how proud she is being a Mom. They never actually SHOW US Cody being reunited with his Mom or the animals at McCleach's lair being freed. I like to think Cody and the mice went back to free the animals and then they all went home.
Love The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under. I am wondering what is the timeframe not talking about between movies I'm talking about between missions. Like saving Penny than saving Cody.
And George C. Scott was also Ebenezer Scrooge in the 1984 TV film adaptation of _A Christmas Carol_ which I say it’s one of the best adaptations of _A Christmas Carol_ and George was such a phenomenal actor in his role as Scrooge.
I LOVED this movie as a child, especially the scenes where Cody and the eagle are soaring through the air. It literally feels as if you're experiencing that majestic ride right along with him!
This movie was one of my favorites as a kid, always loved the scenes with the great eagle beautifully flying across the sky with the little boy. You guys should check out some Cartoon Saloon movies like Wolfwalkers and the Song of the sea.
(At 7:45) when I first saw this movie I assumed Joanna was a pet Komodo Dragon. Then looking back on it, I realize what she loves to eat the most, different kinds of eggs, I realize what she ACTUALLY is… a big ass Monitor Lizard.
I was looking forward to this movie! It's an underrated gem and I definitely have some good childhood memories of watching this one. If you didn't catch it, Orville and Wilbur the Albatross brothers are named after the Wright Brothers (Orville and Wilbur Wright), the inventors of the first airplane. Wilbur is voiced by actor and comedian John Candy who is hilarious. If you're looking for some good and funny movies featuring John Candy, I recommend Uncle Buck, the Great Outdoors, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.
What an outstanding movie. It was one of my favourite ones when I was a kid. The best scenes are Wilbur's (the legendary John Candy) misadventures. And, of course the animation was on point.
@WhiteNoiseReacts This was such nostalgia for me when I was a kid. Glad you watched it and liked it. YOU GUYS SHOULD WATCH FERNGULLY (the last rain forest)! Voices by Tim Curry and Robin Williams, among some. :)
Frank (the lizard) is one of my favorite minor Disney characters. I quote his "I'm free!" chant any time a vacation or long weekend comes up at work. But this movie is so stunning, and there are so many shots that just stay with you even after the first watch.
This movie had two directors, Mike Gabriel and Hendel Butoy. Gabriel has worked as an animator on LOT of Disney movies over the years, such as Oliver and Company (which he was also one of the writers for), The Fox and the Hound, The Great Mouse Detective, Princess and the Frog, and freaking Lion King! He also co-directed Pocahontas with Eric Goldberg Butoy's resume is much smaller, but both he and Gabriel worked as animators for several of the same movies (Black Cauldron, TGMD, Fox and the Hound, and Oliver). Separately, he's worked as an additional animator for Emperor's New Groove, and one of the directors for Fantasia 2000
Originally, the final scene with Wilbur and the hatching eagle chicks was an after credits scene but it has been re-edited for later DVD and Bluray releases (and Disney+) so it appears right before the credits instead.
I love how the Albatross brothers are named after the Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville. That was so clever!
I love this movie. That scene with Cody flying with marahute for the first time is so incredible. One of the most beautiful animated scenes ever. And McLeach is a pretty underrated villain.

Yes! MaryCherry should react to this!
This is a favorite of mine. I remember the opening scene where Cody and the Eagle fly off and down towards the stream.. it gave me goosebumps! It's a fun and engaging story..
4:51 me too. Also, I got emotional 🥹 with the 🦅 🪺 at 5:52.
Can't wait until y'all do The Sword in the Stone from 1963. I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid and just now realized the bird was John Candy
this was one of my favourites as a kid- i remember i watched it when i was really young and i was convinced golden eagles were actually big enough to ride 😅
That was John Candy doing the voice of Wilbur. Also Wilbur and his brother Orville, who was the Albatross in the first Rescuers are named after the aviation pioneers, the Wright Brothers. The actor who did the voice of Orville passed away before the sequel so he could not reprise his role.
Yeah, the other movie did in 1990 was the small part in Home Alone
10:09 The fact that the Rescue Aid Society can apparently hack a military computer was something I didn’t understand as a kid, but it just blows me away as an adult. Talk about organized!
This was another of those movies I played a lot as a kid. I also did that to the Brave Little Toaster, to the extent that the tape "wore out" and "had to be pitched."
I remember "Brave Little Toaster" as a very creepy movie.
I saw this movie like a hundred times as a kid before I even knew about the first one.
Ah. My childhood favorite movie.
As a 90’s kid I always preferred this sequel to the original. The animation, characters and music were exciting. Great job on this reaction!
RDU for animation and Rescuers for characterization. RDU upped the ante in every possible way although the original has this 70's narm charm that's just so funny to watch - kind of like Robin Hood actually lmao
Except Cody he's so stupid, Penny is a lot better
I slightly preferred the sequel too because of the flying scenes.
RIP, John Candy, Wilbur, 1950-1994
RIP, Eva Gabor, Bianca, 1920-1994
RIP, George C. Scott, McLeach, 1927-1999.
Bob Newhart, Bernard, still going at 94.
This is the movie that brings back the nostalgia for Blockbuster… I went with my Dad to rent this movie multiple times. Love it! RIP Blockbuster!!😔
This was the first Disney animated movie to have CGI backgrounds and vehicles
Fun, childhood memory. Thanks!
CAPS was done by Pixar some years before they made Toy Story.
i love you guys checking out more underrated animated movies! please add the great mouse detective, fern gully, and balto to your list!
Underrated Disney renaissance classic 😊
This was the first 100% digital feature film ever made. The animation and backgrounds were done traditionally but all of the coloring, many effects, and the final film printing was all done digitally.
Yup it was done through the Computer Animation Production System better aptly known as CAPS and Disney utilized that system for their next animated films following _Rescuers Down Under_ until 2004’s _Home on the Range_
The lizard, Joanna -- the name is a alteration of a real lizard -- a Goanna! -- and Joanna is a Goanna!
One of my favorites growing up
(At 14:10) You want to know what's ironic? BOTH the albatross's Wilbur and Orville are not only brothers, but they're *both* named after "The Wright Brothers"
Also, you can tell the difference between the birds from the last one and this, by the hats they wear.
... And then Cody grew up to be Steve Irwin
Yep!
Do Sword in the Stone next. That one is severely underrated.
Yes its my favorite Disney movie!!😊
I second Sword in the Stone but next week they’re reacting to Disney’s _DINOSAUR_ and it’s hard to say what Disney animated film will come next following their reaction it could be another Classic Disney animated film or the CG Disney animated films (e.g. Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, Bolt, etc..).
Hey! How many more times is someone gonna call something “underrated?!” When did “underrated” become everybody’s favorite word?
@@nsasupporter7557 but this one is really underrated imo ☝🏻
@@nsasupporter7557Dude it’s their response, no reason to act like a nay-sayer about it.😕
This is a favorite of mine, love the characters. It was my first encounter with the outback as a kid. Made me love it instantly!
Yeah, too bad his very last 2 movies sucked though… Wagons East and Canadian Bacon
This movie pops up in my subconscious so much its actually kinda worrying lolol. One of my all time favorite movies. Also, have yall heard of The Brave Little Toaster, and the Land Before Time?
Yeah, Land Before Time is a classic. I’ve seen like 1 or 2 reactors react to it at the most
… American Tail is also one they need to check out. I liked the sequel better of that one as well… Fievel Goes West.
My momma still has my original VHS tape hidden away❤
I loved the original as a kid. This was just as good and it was made with 2D CGI. I don’t mind this kind of animation. Better than 3D.
Now that you've done these two, I recommend you guys watch/react to The Brave Little Toaster movies, especially the first one. ✌️🏽
(At 37:28) No, warthogs live in Africa. THIS is a razorback.
This and the rescuers is so underrated
Had this on VHS as a kid. A funnier & more action-packed sequel that holds up well.
The 90s kids movies were big into eco-consciousness. This and Ferngully man…
And it was a good thing! Today, sadly, it would be considered "preachy". I think it was handled very well.
I LOVED this movie as a kid, and it still holds a special place in my heart lol
I watched this so many more times than the first Rescuers movie, cause the first has such a dark atmosphere, while this one is so colorful and lively.
Also the VA playing Macleach is George C Scott, he was in Dr Strangelove and Patton. Wilbur was John Candy.
And George C. Scott was also Ebenezer Scrooge in the 1984 TV film adaptation of _A Christmas Carol_ which I say it’s one of the best adaptations of _A Christmas Carol_ and George was such a phenomenal actor in his role as Scrooge.
I'm so happy you reacted to this, this movie is soooo underrated.
Marahute is a great friend to Cody, and she giving one of her features to Cody as a gift was very sweet of her.
Love John Candy in this movie!!! he cracks me up😂
Joanna is a goanna, a type of monitor lizard, same family as komodo dragons.
zoological note: the pig (razorback) is a feral pig, not a warthog. :)
I LOVED this movie as a child, especially the scenes where Cody and the eagle are soaring through the air. It literally feels as if you're experiencing that majestic ride right along with him!
John Candy voice Wilbur RIP Legend!
No wonder you like Wilbur: it's John Candy!
This is my favourite Disney movie of all time, it's so underrated. I love it so much, it deserves more recognition
This one is another one of my childhood favorites
I was looking forward to this movie! It's an underrated gem and I definitely have some good childhood memories of watching this one. If you didn't catch it, Orville and Wilbur the Albatross brothers are named after the Wright Brothers (Orville and Wilbur Wright), the inventors of the first airplane. Wilbur is voiced by actor and comedian John Candy who is hilarious. If you're looking for some good and funny movies featuring John Candy, I recommend Uncle Buck, the Great Outdoors, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.
Epic classics! John Candy, gone too soon 😢❤
@@DakotaDogProductionsAk83 yeah, next year will be 30 years since he passed away can you believe that?
You guys are the Best!
Such nostalgia! Our neighbor owned this movie on VHS, and on a weekly basis would borrow it just so I could rewatch it.
One of the mainstays of my childhood.
This movie inspired me as a ten year old that I could make a difference ❤
What an outstanding movie. It was one of my favourite ones when I was a kid. The best scenes are Wilbur's (the legendary John Candy) misadventures. And, of course the animation was on point.
@WhiteNoiseReacts This was such nostalgia for me when I was a kid. Glad you watched it and liked it. YOU GUYS SHOULD WATCH FERNGULLY (the last rain forest)! Voices by Tim Curry and Robin Williams, among some. :)
And another animated movie set in Australia
This movie had the most satisfying proposal. Change my mind
I love all 4 of you, you’re great people 🙂
Frank (the lizard) is one of my favorite minor Disney characters. I quote his "I'm free!" chant any time a vacation or long weekend comes up at work. But this movie is so stunning, and there are so many shots that just stay with you even after the first watch.
Joanna is a monitor lizard. So basically, komoto dragons and stuff like that would be showing up at her family reunion
A Goanna to be exact, and they are literally also known as the Australian Monitor.
@@EChacon 😎 cool
Awesome 💯
Id like to see you tackle The Secret of NIHM 🤘
Ah, JoAnna the Goanna...
My all-time favorite cartoon character!
He also co-directed Pocahontas with Eric Goldberg
Butoy's resume is much smaller, but both he and Gabriel worked as animators for several of the same movies (Black Cauldron, TGMD, Fox and the Hound, and Oliver).
This is definitely one of my favorite Disney movies. So glad to see you guys cover it!
