    Beavis and Butthead shirt, Beatles poster, and Neutral Milk Hotel? I think this is the most awesome anyone has ever been.
    So this album is, uh, the most emotionally devastating work of art I've ever experienced. It's a cohesive, towering, incomparable masterpiece of poetry and emotion. Thank you for listening to some of it.
    As someone else said, these tracks are separated on the album and purposely so. Part 2 is supposed to make you nostalgic for the beginning of the album, after having been separated from the first piece. Part 2 uses words that acquire more meaning in the songs between part 1 and part 2 (words like brother, wings, blister, and holy). Also the unexpected change back to the melody of Two-headed Boy Pt. 1 (8:59) has an enormous emotional impact after being separated from it for so long, especially when you don't know it's coming.
    Frankly, this album is the greatest work of art I've ever been lucky enough to experience. I'm not exaggerating.
    How to end this comment...um....well...with a suggestion, of course. Three words: Band-Maid "Warning!"
    Keep being awesome.

    I think you’re dead-on about Jeff Mangum’s singing. He’s not a conventionally great singer with a pretty voice, but his singing is extremely powerful and effective on this album. He’s a raw singer and the production here is pretty straightforward and minimalistic. It’s not live, but this is definitely the experience you would get seeing him live.

    It's cool to see the next generation enjoying this music for the first time. Neutral Milk Hotel is visceral and strange. They're part of what's called the Elephant 6 Collective, a group of kids who recorded music in their bedrooms on cassettes in the 80s and went on to form different bands: Neutral Milk Hotel, Apples in Stereo and The Olivia Tremor Control (among many others). If you dig this song, check out the other Elephant 6 bands.

      olivia tremor control may be the greatest band since the beatles. obviously influenced by them and the beach boys, but man are they incredible in their own way. saw them about 8 months before bill doss passed

    Thank you so much for reacting to NMH! The title track, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, is one of my favorite songs on the planet. The entire album is just beautiful and usually makes me cry.

    Fans of this one gonna fan the f out - triggers some intense sing alongs in bars in Brooklyn, I can say with authority. Get it that it's not for everyone, tho. And must add, it's one of those tracks that's better appreciated in the context of the album, which is just as much a work of art as Dark Side of the Moon, imho. These tracks don't include the full band and the lovely orchestration included on other songs that are so great, but also make these tracks stand out for how they're different. Maybe listen to "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea," "Holland, 1945."

    I'm so glad someone requested Neutral Milk Hotel! Love them! Carrot Flowers is great, too.
    The drummer from NMH is part of a really fun duo called A Hawk and a Hacksaw. Delightfully weird.

    If I ever go more than a year without listening to this album it reduces me to tears no matter how hard i try to fight it.
    This is the closest thing to perfection in art I've ever experienced.

    one of the songs on the album titled "oh comely" is the longest song on the album at around 8 minutes and he recorded that whole song in 1 take, much recommend

    @Phantasen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Great reaction! NMH is criminally underrated, though I can understand that the abstract lyrics and raw vocals are not for everybody.
    I recommend listening to the whole album, all the songs flow together and in to each other and create this wild 40 minute rollercoaster ride.
    If you want something shorter than that, then the titular song "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" works very well as a standalone track.

    Love this album. My favorites are The King of Carrot Flowers part 1-3 which is more of a psychedelic rock song. If you liked the rawness of this song check out some Daniel Johnston's True Love Will Find You in the End th-cam.com/video/Ma7lyfYzIw8/w-d-xo.html also see the documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston

    This album is one of the best albums hands down. From beginning to end, it plays like one long beautiful song. The vocals are really endearing and extremely intimate. It's like he is really exposing his vulnerability in his voice. The lyrics evoke lots of bittersweet imagery without relying on explanation or, like you said, repetitive refrains. If you listen to the whole album he uses more instruments which are very peculiar and interesting.

    Thanks for reviewing this offbeat delight!
    For the record these are separate songs (they don't appear consecutively on the album), but part one has a second sub-part to it, "The Fool".
    Given the story behind the album (narrator chasing Anne Frank and her reincarnations in a time machine), one of the "entendres" of the two-headed boy has to do with Nazi genetic experiments, but I'm sure there's more to it than that.
    Given all the other stuff you've dug, I think you would really appreciate "Oh Comely" from the same album

    Awesome reaction man keep it up, subscribed! Thanks for doing lesser known songs it’s so cool
    I feel like more simple songs like this are overlooked (just a man w/ a guitar) but lyrics and melody alone can make something beautiful. And I love his delivery it feels so raw and emotional

  • @davidn5269
    @davidn5269 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The lyrics can range from abstract to surreal, but hearing within the context of the album and knowing some of the album’s back story can help you start to puzzle out what some of the imagery might mean. It’s pretty open to interpretation, of course. I think the album was inspired by his experience reading The Diary of Anne Frank and falling in love with her as a kid. The Holocaust imagery is definitely present on these two tracks.

      I should have known better as a fan of Radiohead and Floyd that I should have listened to the whole album front to back I keep hearing it piecemeal and frankly was not blown away for a band with so much fanfare.

      Holland, Ghost and Aeroplane work as singles in my humble opinion
      Tracks like Oh Comely, King of Carrot Flowers etc have to be appreciated in the broader context of the album, instrumentals too

    • @JoeKnows44

  • @Dielawn69
    @Dielawn69 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I never understand why people pick the worst songs to introduce someone to a band. I love the song dont get me wrong but songs like The Aeroplane Over the Sea or Holland 1945 are way better songs to hear first.
