.same lol. This channel I never take serious. More like free stand up comedy. Too many blind fan boys who are only willing to listen to what they wanna hear :)
+pat dinco yeah this channel should never be taken too seriously, i think of it as 'Top Gear' for camera's and usually they make good point for both points of view. Me personally, i'd never ditch my dslr, but i appreciate some people might want a mirrorless. If it takes photo's and you enjoy shooting with it, then thats the point :)
+Aiden Lane The ergonomics of DSLR's tend to be better too. I don't get why most of these mirrorless cameras just ape the designs of the old film SLR's, a box with a button. At least SONY are trying something different.
Moko Arlyana Fair point. I think that's what they're going after, the folk who grew up with those kind of bodies (and the hipsters, but they're a different matter lol). I still don't really get the point though. The old SLR's were shaped that way for practical reasons, they had a physical mechanism in there that required that shape. You don't need this with digital. You could slap a sensor into a cheesecake lol. I think they're just playing to the nostalgia crowed, both the genuine ones (like yourself) or the hipsters who probably never used such a camera but their dad had one lol.
Photographers should be more concerned with taking good shots than worrying about which style is "best". I'll keep my 5D Mark2 for years as long as it keeps working.
Battery level is improved, photo quality is amazing, focus is quick and accurate, fps is amazing, better noise performance, better dynamic range the most dslr.
When I transited from Film to Digital, the 'one shot one chance for a great photo' stayed with me. When i'm out on trips, I made sure each photo was worthy.. which means i barely hit the 300 photo mark on my OMD-EM5 and hence battery life isn't a problem.
This is exactly my thinking too. I use a 7d for wildlife photos but will still stop myself taking a photo if I just know it won't be worth it. Thousands of pics a day is a rarety even in bursts.
+The Brickventurer I would guess weddings are where you have to take a lot of photos fast & then you will have to change batteries. Takes me 15 seconds to change a battery on my a6000, & the way i shoot I rarely miss a shot.
+Moko Arlyana What all does that 15 seconds consist of? Just physically swapping the battery? Removing from a Tripod? Rebooting the camera? I can change the battery in my a65 in about 8 seconds. (Just did a demo test) And that's from screen saying 'Battery Exhausted' to having the unit powered back on and ready to take the next shot. I didnt think Sony would have fiddled with the design and electronics enough to double the time to be able to remove the battery and the camera to reboot. I'm not trying to say you are wrong, just curious. I was thinking of picking up an a6000 for simple stuff, but might re-invest in a used a77 instead.
+q5sys you're faster than me brother. turn the camera off, open battery door, take exhausted battery out of camera & put it in my pocket, take fresh battery out of pocket, put battery in camera & close the door, restart camera. My camera is an a6000 & I use it on the street daily.
Well I've had 4 years to get down the motion. lol. I also got to the point where I dont even bother turning the camera off and back on with the switch. Since Im just changing the battery I dont care if the camera puts the lens goes through its shutdown routine. I just reach into my pocket grab the next battery, pop the door and battery out, slide in the new, and by the time I've got the other battery back in my pocket and the door closed the camera has rebooted and is ready to go. Four years of doing that and I've never had a problem because of not 'shutting the camera down when replacing a battery. I've put about 120k on my a65's shutter... I'm wondering when it'll croak which is why I'm looking for another camera. I dont use mine everyday, but at least a few hundred shots a week. The only time it gets a heavy workout is when I'm at an event and will burn through a 6k+ photos in a weekend.
What about the exposed sensor on mirrorless? The worst thing apart from the battery life is all the dust and dirt on the sensor. The best thing about the mirrorless is the fact that it is smaller and lighter . I still prefer an actual viewfinder and only occasionally using the screen
When you think about it, shooing with one of the A7s is like shooting film in a sense. The only difference, you don't swap rolls of film every couple minutes but your battery ^^
+overTIMe shot 900 photos today at a 7 hour wedding gig with my a7s, changed 1 dead battery and second battery is down to 49% Unless you actually use the camera, you never know how it performs. Only what people say on the internet.
+overTIMe Come on, I have an A7S, for a typical tourism day, shooting videos and photos, I use 1 battery, some days I use maximum 2! And yes, the grain of the A7S looks like film, which is amazing at 20,000 ISO.
+Hu Ph 30bucks for a battery-ac adapter and plugin to your batterypack of choice.. You can probably get up to 24h of continous shooting time :D All with the cost of one single genuine battery..
I have an old d5200 with batterygrip. I have a small lowepro bag that the description said would fit a couple of spare batteries, some memorycards, a remote and the camera with a small lens (assuming they where thinking of the 18-55 kit lens) What i have in it however is the camera with the grip and that aforementioned lens, a big-ass 70-300mm lens, the charger (in one piece since it has US standard connection and it comes with an EU adapter here in Norway), 5 batteries (not original since there is the batterygrip cheat for that camera and original ones are waaay overpriced), a remote, some memory cards and i still have room to spare. Actually planning to make the swap to mirrorless (and yes the a7 series, holding out for a7s3 though) so i will only get more space since its a comparably smaller camera, even with a batterygrip (i feel the grip is a must for any camera that doesn't have one built into it, not for the small batteries which last a while except when filming but because i got big hands and i need somewhere to put them. the extra battery slot is a bonus, so is the extra exposure button). I can't imagine what i will do with that extra space, maybe a new lens? ;)
Or simply a battery bank with 20kwh's. That would beat any dslr battery. Dont really feel that the battery life is important unless you're doing some extreme hike into the most remote wilderness where you cant top up your batteries within 5 days.
I love how people get so upset when something they love gets put down. Can you really not handle the idea that you didn't make the best decision? Or maybe think about that fact that what one person needs is not what another person needs and just be fine with it. I own a Sony mirrorless, a Sigma DP1 Merrill and Nikon D500 and D800E and I use them all in whatever situation it calls for. If you can't afford multiple cameras then figure out what you need from a camera and buy accordingly. This guy isn't saying that DSLR's are better just that mirrorless don't make them obsolete for various reasons. Too many sheltered people who can't handle any negativity.
+c0ldc0ne The smaller flange focal distance is going to be big deal in the future, I reckon. Once there's a suitable range of good lenses solely designed for mirrorless cameras, things should get interesting. I think it is easier to build smaller, lighter or even higher quality lenses for mirrorless cameras, than it is for DSLRs.
+Taiwan Explorer Obviously I can't predict the future, I'm just looking at it from a technical point of view. To me that mechanical, flapping mirror will become obsolete, as technology progresses. And if I may get a little cheeky here, if DSLRs have a future as bright as that of workhorses, then ... well my point exactly =P
Video = Mirrorless Photos = DSLR I went from a Canon 70D to a Panasonic GH4 and the difference in video is incredible. Even when comparing 1080p to 1080p the GH4 is much sharper. However, for stills I "still" prefer my 70D. Panasonic is slowly releasing more lenses for the GH4, which helps with stills but it still can't compete.
If you have to fire up the sensor and expose it to light every single time you want to look through the viewfinder (and leave it on for the entire duration) doesn't that make the sensor deteriorate over time much faster, developing hot/stuck pixels and such?
Being mainly a video guy, I am looking into replacing my dslr with an a7s. Although it is quite hard to sell all your lenses, get new ones, and overall quite expensive. I just wish big brands would start coming our with decent dslr's. I'm not against dslr's at all, in fact I like them more than mirrorless, but for the time being they have far superior video quality, which justies the switch
***** Yea I agree with you. Manual video is definitely the way to go. Although even tho I am professional video guy, I wouldn't mind the extra capability that a DSLR adds for photo proposes. If the A7sii was in a 5d body, I would definitely buy that over a mirrorless. But still, that's just me.
Travis Alex Bud. your google+ says that you are a portrait photographer. Not even video. I'm sorry but you should only engage in arguments where you know what you are talking about.
I'm normally a HUGE DRTV fan, but the videos lately aren't nearly as on point as they used to be. A huge chunk of this video was focused around reduced battery life in a mirrorless camera. Are shots per battery really anything more than a stat to put up on a video for comparison? As a photographer, I really don't care. I'll take one or two extra batteries. They're fairly tiny and don't really interfere at all with my workflow. Who is really looking into their viewfinder when the camera is off. I guess in some situation where you need to conserve battery life out in the wilderness, taking the best Nat Geo photos of all time. For 99% of pros and consumers this really isn't the case. Ok, lets talk about autofocus. The a6000 has one of the best autofocus systems I've used. AF-C is crazy fast and awesome on this camera for both stills and video! Yes the GH4 isn't where its at for low-light, we know this. But the a7sII is still smaller than most. Just some constructive criticism here. Your videos just don't have the same appeal as they used to. +1 for the funny "place your bet now" sequence. That's the kind of shit I want to see in your videos. Anyways good luck, still a fan!
I agree with you. I personally don't care what people shoot with, all I care is the results at the end. But I do think DigitalRev TV's point was that many people switch over to mirrorless because they still want great image quality in a much smaller package, yet they end up carrying more gear or gear that weighs the same as dslr around with them because they need far more batteries. The lenses also don't get lighter once you don't use the native Sony lenses on your Sony body for example. I still prefer dslr but that might change in the future.
Great Video, I recently got a sony a6000 and i'm finding that instead of not using my Canon anymore; I'll probably use both. You could easily make a video on reasons to Dump DSLRs too, (if you haven't already) :)
I'm currently happy with my Fujifilm x-t10. I don't worry about the battery, I never take enough shots in a day to exhaust the battery and Fuji makes good auto focusing lenses.
my first camera was an APS-C DSLR. i sold that and got a full frame DSLR and used that for years. a few days ago i got my first micro four thirds mirrorless and it is incredible how small it is. i can keep it in my backpack if i want, and maybe i got lucky somehow but my experience with mirrorless battery life has been more than satisfactory. i got four extra batteries if i ever need them or i go camping someday but every time i've taken it out, the battery has lasted the whole time with plenty to spare, and it's not even like technology has advanced, the camera i have came out a year before this video and this battery was manufactured in 2016. even if the battery life was mediocre, the bulk of carrying one or two extra batteries in my pocket is far less than the bulk of carrying around even a crop sensor DSLR, and the increased lens size that comes with that. i don't know if i'll ever be able to go back to anything larger than micro four thirds mirrorless for now on.
Good for you then, i'm a former nikon user myself (D610) but it get broken now, i'm trying to make a decision whether to use DSLR again or mirrorless, haha
same with me. I've both canon dslr's and panasonic g7 mirrorless . I like more the g7 for video but for stills my Canon 6D full frame is still better especially in low light. I love the evf of the G7 though
I'm one of those people. switched from 7d to a7s and I love it~ Well, I do miss the robustness of my 7d... a7s felt so fragile that I had to buy a full leather armor.
Amazing and informative!!! I'm so glad to have Canon 700D as my beginner camera over any other mirrorless. It's worth. Not just about the size, but the quality of my videos is improved.
+SnehalWagh Indeed. It's hard to go wrong with the entry level DSLR's these days. The main benefits of the higher end models are more about convenience and construction, like dedicated buttons for things and the top LCD screen. Or being able to use them as a makeshift hammer haha.
+Travis Alex well i kinda agree with the battery. i have an a6000 now and the battery is half that of the a58 which is an slt camera (both use an evf). it's simply down to how big a battery they can fit into the hand grip
I still have - AND use - both systems, and now wouldn't want to be without either. BOTH have their own advantages and disadvantages. Also, I find that EVFs are often MORE use in low light conditions than their optical cousins...
*If you compare shooting on a DSLR in Live View all the time (which is what Mirrorless do) the battery performance of the DSLR's is almost the same as with Sony mirrorless, you can't compare apples to oranges, try it on your Nikon or Canon in Live view, battery will drain pretty fast too*
+Kyser Soze Your point makes sense, but is a little skewed. Shooting live view on a canon will have to power a 3+ inch lcd which obviously takes a lot of power. Saying that this is just like powering a tiny little viewfinder isn't a very sound argument
+mattttyler Most people who shoot on Sony prefer the LCD and even the mirrorless camera is always switching between the LCD and digital viewfinder, if you see the specs the voltage required for the LCD and the digital viewfinder is the same, so, basically you're on "Live View" all the time, plus, the Wasabi batteries for Sony's are really cheap, like 30 dollars each
+Kyser Soze volts means nothing in this case, watts is the spec you should look for, as they don´t say what current the screen draw, the bigger screen uses loads more power, if that would not be the case, the little viewfinder would be ultra power inefficient
Just get and use a camera that suits your style be it DSLR or Mirror-less. I've never bought into the DSLR v Mirror-less argument. if you want ultimate performance and don't mind the size and bulk get a DSLR otherwise if you want smaller more compact system get a mirror-less camera.
The main annoyance is the start up time. 3 seconds from power on. 7 seconds after a battery swap. Frequent battery swap is bad enough, but 7 seconds blocked out after each swap is tension inducer.
I believe it will take another 5-10 years before the mirrorless cameras will be better than a DSLR on the most important features for pro photographers. But today mirrorless is okay as a point and shoot camera.
+Svein Arne Grønnevik It'll take that long for them to be better than the current DSLR's in all those ways, but DSLR's won't just stop improving either. They'll get to a point where they're good enough for you to make the choice all about preference rather than any distinct advantage though. I'm guessing that's what you were getting at and I just read it weird lol.
+Sabi Teodosiev As a cleaning technician, part-time carpenter and professional figure ice skater, I prefer polaroids. But obviously, the internet should rather base it's decisions on the insights of people who start their youtube comments by pointing out they're theoretical physicists.
I've had a mirrorless for 2 months and I hate how quickly the damn sensor gets dirty! It's always exposed, I kind of miss the protection of the mirror. I have a A7RII, there should be some kind of shield covering the sensor when you change lenses because one too many tipes I got over f/11 and I'm seeing huge ass dust particles and shit.
***** constantly using a blower and making sure I keep everything facing down. Then when you do need to stop down you see the dust. I never had to clean a sensor with my DSLRs.
***** I still love the camera though even though it seems like it's like the manufactures want these mirrorless cameras to break on purpose so they can get repeat purchases and repair money.
+Jv Jone I'd actually rather have to clean the sensor than than the reflex mirror, which is extremely ill advised as delicate as it is. Even if it's not on the final product, specs in the viewfinder drive me up the wall.
Christopher Remley I admit it is nice having a closed system with no specks in the viewfinder, but the positive is the those pecks don't show up in pictures lol. I don't know if it's the same with all wit hall mirrorless but with the a7RII if you are shooting with a wide angle or any lens where you need to stop down you have to make sure you blow the sensor and the rear element of your lens before locking them on. IDK if it's the 42MP sensor bvs the 20-24MP sensor DSLRs I'm use to or the exposed sensor in the mirrorless but dust is super noticeable.
the single reason I am doing exactly this-selling off my dslr gear to move to mirrorless despite my having pretty nice gear- is the fact that you cannot shoot video with dslr and have autofocus with the f stop open past 3.5... plus I want to have more picture profiles/log...
+MarchuxProductions any of the Fuji X-Series are an amazing option. Image quality is insane and i mean, Im still using an X-E1 for professional stuff, its great.
I regularly go out with my OMD cameras and take 400+ shots over hours. The trick is good power management settings and management. Don't keep it on while walking around, don't bother with live view unless actually needed etc etc. Couple of tiny spare batteries in your backpack doesn't hurt either.
I have the Sony a7R. I have 4 batteries for it, but I have never had to replace the battery more than once in a shoot. My shots consist mostly of landscapes, astrophotography and long exposure shots.
I also love my old film cameras, three generations of Nikons, but I'm just too spoiled by digital's instant gratification to use film any longer. It's a shame because those Nikons and Nikkors are still beautiful and built to be indestructible, but it's only digital for me now.
The battery life of the Panasonic GH4 is excellent! Canon and Panasonic should both work on full frame mirrorless cameras (good for low light) that would give the Sony A7Sii a run for the money.
I have both DSLR and Mirrorless, I always grab my mirrorless for first choice, I love the low weight and size and the DSLR quality photos it produces. If DSLR size and weight stay the same it won't have a future for outside of studio use.
It's not the camera; but the person behind it that matters, really. The camera is just a tool - it all boils down to whether or not you have the skills. 😉
iso performance? a7s2 image quality? a7r2 want both? buy both, carry like you used to with DLSR Also, with the battery life, why is everybody complaining...? My a7 lasts 500+ easily
The negativity is killing me about the battery life on Sony's. It doesn't (and shouldn't) matter that your camera lasts forever. The video is literally called, "Reasons Not to Dump DSLRs for Mirrorless" not "Reasons why Sony Camera's Suck Major Dong" because the don't! They have their advantages and disadvantages like the rest of the cameras on the market, and this should not be the place to put your negativity into. It's a video. Videos have opinions. He's not hating on Sony, nor is he a Canon fanboy. (Kai is actually a Nikon fanboy) He's just stating reasons.
I loved this video...more-so, because it was quite hilarious to me! However, I got a great deal of information and I appreciate that. Thanks for the input.
Well, yeah. Only a few shops are selling them, but quite overpriced. The other way to get them is to import them from UK (but actually they are coming from HongKong in the first place), doing this could save me around 600$ in comparison with the shops prices, because they are sold without french tax price. And I'm pretty sure these few shops are also importing them and reselling them with a huge price tag afterwards. It was the same thing when the first A7s came out, I had to wait for a long time before beign able to buy it in a "regular" way.
+Nikhil Kumar (NikGamesandVFX) take a trip to Dubai and enjoy the warm weather here and you get the chance to get the sony a7rii at the lowest price tag ever, as there is no tax in Dubai
Good point on battery life. I don't even bother to switch off my two entry-level Canons, a 700D and an 1100D, when I put them down for the day. Canon's power management is *that* good.
in my opinion, the biggest advantages of mirrorless over dslr are, in mirrorless what you see in the screen is what you get, and mirrorless are lighter.I shoot fuji in jpeg and I like the colors of the pictures so now I dont need to spend time retouching each photo on adobe lightroom. For mirrorless, get a few batteries on amazon and you are ready.
I had a mirrorless camera and now I have a dslr the mirrorless was a good camera but auto focus was a bit slower and the electronic viewfinder would give me headaches 99% of what I shoot is motorsports so need a fast auto focus I can see why people like mirrorless though as they are lighter/smaller and if u are shooting slow moving things or still things they are brilliant just not the camera for me
It's funny to watch this, as I got into photography at the turning point for DSLRs, back when they finally started to match up to Film cameras. I remember for years the split in the community over the different tech, one side bashing the other. I don't doubt that's how things are going to go down between DSLR and Mirrorless fans... *looks at comment section*... yeah pretty much spot on. Honestly there is nothing drawing me towards Mirrorless just yet, although I so rarely use the regular viewfinder anymore; the tilt/touch screen on my DSLR makes life so much easier for someone with a bad back like myself. But if/when the tech truly stomps on DSLRs, then I will be a happy convert ;D
Dslr are cameras that happen to take video......if you r mainly interested in video get a mirror less camera. So the people out here talking about gh4 and Sony blowing dslrs out of the water are comparing apples to oranges for different reasons. If your primary focus is photography there is no mirrorless camera that can compete with a dslr bc the primary focus of dslr is to take pictures and the Sony for example, you need an adapter just to get any type of QUALITY glass I front of the body. You r crazy if you think having a mirrorless camera with an adapter and lens from another company is gonna produce the same quality pictures as a dslr with glass from the same company lol. I like photography the most so I have a dslr and use the 4K from go pros and I'm happy with that set up. It all depends on what you r into and what you want the most.
And by the way most of these people all jacked about 4 k are just uploading things to TH-cam or Instagram lol. Do you even have a home setup that can handle 4K? Is your display a 4K display because if not you never see the full potential anyway. So why do you even care lol....... There are like less than 1% of real professionals switching to mirrorless. Sony needs to focus on making proper glass and a camera that does overheat than maybe we can talk
Kinda disagree, take out a fujifilm x series camera for a photo shoot and you are gonna be blown away by it or at least I was. If not for video I would ditch my canon system and completely switch to the fuji x system because of sharpness, colour rendition, fun shooting as the bodies are usually quite nice to handle and ability to use vintage glass easily.
+toyarj37 difficult to get numbers of professionals using mirrorless. I guess 10-25% have switched. You might define real photographers as ones who DSLRs.
+rakkkar trust me I wish I could lighten my load.... Nobody wants to be out here with all this heavy ass bulky gear. In maybe 3-5 years this may be a different convo. I need Nikon and canon to update their glass so we can take full advantage of these higher mp cameras and canon needs to update all their bodies and Sony NEEDS to work on useable quality glass without the need of an adapter. When all this happens then maybe I can make a better decision. I'm not saying mirror less is not good it's just not an option for me right now. In the spring I'm going to Africa on a lot of safaris. This for me is a once in a lifetime trip. I gotta get it right. Don't know about Fuji but Sony STRUGGLES on the zoom end at 300 mm and beyond. No Bueno for wildlife or even sports.
I'm just a beginner. Yesterday for the first time I had my hands on canon and sony cameras and I have to admit (as a beginner) that canon wins all the way. Because size is not a matter after all and the electronic viewfinder was annoying and I agree it was a little bit laggy. Also the software on Canon was much better. As a newbie i just easily adjust settings and on Sony i couldn't really understand much :D Of course I will get more fluent with time, but that's just my first thoughts.
+Marcelo Tezza Oh I see you see us as the funny guys to make you laugh yeah! Like we are just here for you entertainment! This is hard hitting photography journalism and very very serious! :P
+kalidesu No, i never truly laughed hard with, nor took it as very serious channel about photography but i think it lost it routes, that was making this middle ground between the two. i guess lock and guy need to togheter to make it truly happen. Just a guess.
Bought a M6, never going back to DSLR, use it far more and no more carrying a brick around...great video and pics too. Adapter means I can use all my old lenses too..as for the viewfinder, don’t miss it at all.
how does the default 15-48 STM lens compare to your adapted lenses? I bought an M6 last night and I've never had a camera or camcorder worth more than $100, nor any cameras with detachable lenses, so I'm a total noob.
Oh yes, is going to happen! There are only two fundamental differences between a DSLR F.Frame and a Mirrorless F.Frame: The DSLR viewfinder is optical (used since the old SRL cameras with mirror and prism) and in the Mirrorless cameras the viewfinder is electronic! The other difference is that the Mirrorless Is faster in shots per second! The rest is a bit semantic! One makes consulting the lcd after shooting, the other gives the final product on the EVF even before shooting! There are other small differences but the bottom line is this! It's a matter of taste. For Canon and Nikon the only problem to be solved is to change the focal length from the rear lenses to the image sensor! This is the real concern for manufacturers: change the architecture of rear lenses and keep the crop at a smaller distance! Sony took the first step in F.Frame cameras others will have to follow this evolution if they want to enter in the war! Optical prisms and mirrors are no longer justified in digital cameras! Respecting the likes of each other and without passions is the best way to understanding. The future will quickly bring the answer to the more conservative! Try it first! Greetings to all...
i really dont get whats so important between mirror and mirrorless. From what i see by changing the structure what you can get is a smaller camera body. This attract non hobbyist or casual users that just want a camera that is lightweight, and probably will use auto mode all day. For a hobbyist like me, i bring lots of lenses with me most of the time, bigger camera body is not a problem. Moreover, small camera body with big lenses, i believe there will be a balancing issue.
As others have said, I myself use the Sony A6000, making the switch to mirrorless was honestly a better choice at least for this model. I use it currently to shoot alt modelling photos, and I find it amazing. Battery is exceptional I have spent multiple hours out with it on shooting photos an still had more then enough battery life. I just spent two hours of shooting myself the other day with half an hour of hd video recording after still had over 40% battery life. The autofocus is amazing and even using its continuous shoot system (which I don't know if you used it for the shots of the person dancing as that's what its there for) takes amazing pictures which you can even play back almost like a mini clip. The only downside I have found is that unlike most dslr or older opticals, Sonys unique frame basically makes most aftermarket lenses unusable or crap unless you buy specialized mounting brackets for each type.
just here to see people argue with each other in the comments
+The Stevie B Show They die a video Werke they actually said they will now be like TopGear 😂
+pat dinco Kodak Brownies rule
+pat dinco It's sort of the point of this video isn't it? People who buys mirrorless knows those cons already.
The pixel game sequence was amazing!
To be honest, I just like the feeling of a bigger camera in my hands.
Guess I'm not the only one 😁
+Aiden Lane We all like to feel something bigger in our hands...
Thats what she said! giggity giggity
+Aiden Lane The ergonomics of DSLR's tend to be better too. I don't get why most of these mirrorless cameras just ape the designs of the old film SLR's, a box with a button. At least SONY are trying something different.
+TalesOfWar grew up shooting film which must be why mirrorless feels better in my hands. Different ergonomics for different folks.
Moko Arlyana
Fair point. I think that's what they're going after, the folk who grew up with those kind of bodies (and the hipsters, but they're a different matter lol). I still don't really get the point though. Photographers should be more concerned with taking good shots than worrying about which style is "best". I'll keep my 5D Mark2 for years as long as it keeps working.

Nah, not by much.
How has it changed?
Battery level is improved, photo quality is amazing, focus is quick and accurate, fps is amazing, better noise performance, better dynamic range the most dslr.
The focus is amazing nowadays. Battery life still not good, but they are cheap so u can buy 2nd battery

Holy crap new intro

What about the exposed sensor on mirrorless? The worst thing apart from the battery life is all the dust and dirt on the sensor. The best thing about the mirrorless is the fact that it is smaller and lighter . I still prefer an actual viewfinder and only occasionally using the screen
a good excuse to drink juice
+chinyere ogazi Nice one!
Why would you need an excuse to drink juice?
Daniel Fjäll did you watch the video?
+chinyere ogazi Sorry, I didn't get it. What was the good excuse?
Daniel Fjäll he could have used anything to show the analogy but he used juice
When you think about it, shooing with one of the A7s is like shooting film in a sense.
The only difference, you don't swap rolls of film every couple minutes but your battery ^^
+overTIMe
shot 900 photos today at a 7 hour wedding gig with my a7s, changed 1 dead battery and second battery is down to 49%
Unless you actually use the camera, you never know how it performs. Only what people say on the internet.
+Hu Ph your comment is on the internet, should we believe you? Lol.
+Daniel Spaniel wow those batteries are some BS Damn.... smh
I think camera bag is big enough for 1 more extra battery...
I have an old d5200 with batterygrip. I have a small lowepro bag that the description said would fit a couple of spare batteries, some memorycards, a remote and the camera with a small lens (assuming they where thinking of the 18-55 kit lens)
What i have in it however is the camera with the grip and that aforementioned lens, a big-ass 70-300mm lens, the charger (in one piece since it has US standard connection and it comes with an EU adapter here in Norway), 5 batteries (not original since there is the batterygrip cheat for that camera and original ones are waaay overpriced), a remote, some memory cards and i still have room to spare.
Yeah, nothing ever happens while your camera is unusable because you're changing batteries.
I could add 5 batters with the space that I save with the smaller camera and smaller lenses too.
Fast fwd 4 yrs.. my a7r w/ vert grip ( 2 batteries ) lasts weeks of shooting 😂
what sony need on their a7rII / III is an articulated solar panel
No, a telescopic wind generator!
just a battery grip enough ..Bud

RAG DEEKONDA yes thats simple

+c0ldc0ne
The smaller flange focal distance is going to be big deal in the future, I reckon. Once there's a suitable range of good lenses solely designed for mirrorless cameras, things should get interesting. I think it is easier to build smaller, lighter or even higher quality lenses for mirrorless cameras, than it is for DSLRs.
+Taiwan Explorer
Obviously I can't predict the future, I'm just looking at it from a technical point of view. To me that mechanical, flapping mirror will become obsolete, as technology progresses. And if I may get a little cheeky here, if DSLRs have a future as bright as that of workhorses, then ... well my point exactly =P
*****
You know how to stir up a shitstorm.
Video = Mirrorless
Photos = DSLR
I went from a Canon 70D to a Panasonic GH4 and the difference in video is incredible. Even when comparing 1080p to 1080p the GH4 is much sharper. However, for stills I "still" prefer my 70D. Panasonic is slowly releasing more lenses for the GH4, which helps with stills but it still can't compete.
with the release of the gh5 they'll have 3 more lenses, otherwise we have to use meatbones or *shutters* vintage lens
The 70D AF was awful. So the GH4 must be really bad.
I now feel a strong urge to get some orange juice.
canon m10
*no fucking juice at all*
If you have to fire up the sensor and expose it to light every single time you want to look through the viewfinder (and leave it on for the entire duration) doesn't that make the sensor deteriorate over time much faster, developing hot/stuck pixels and such?
Travis Alex Wait, are you saying that you don't shoot in manual for video? Why are you even commenting?!
Travis Alex Bud. your google+ says that you are a portrait photographer. Not even video. I'm sorry but you should only engage in arguments where you know what you are talking about.
+Marek Bartnik
The D500 exists, guys. 4k video does actually exist in DSLRs.
+Marek Bartnik How so?
It's just fun don't take it too seriously. Lighten up :)
Great Video, I recently got a sony a6000 and i'm finding that instead of not using my Canon anymore; I'll probably use both. You could easily make a video on reasons to Dump DSLRs too, (if you haven't already) :)
+Matt Jackson I also have an a6000 and its simply mind blowing. AF is WAY better than my 5D.
+muncherelli but af isn't that important. I try to only use manual so there us no reason to buy a mirrorless
+Lee Cason lol
+muncherelli The 5D is eleven years old and you are surprised the A6000 has better AF? lmao...
+MrKdr500 isn't that ancient 5D still better than most mirrorless camera?
What is sad, is that there are people that will believe this.
Turn off the wifi. My A7II battery lasts all day. Jeepers.
John Kennington how many shots?
I'm currently happy with my Fujifilm x-t10. I don't worry about the battery, I never take enough shots in a day to exhaust the battery and Fuji makes good auto focusing lenses.

hahahahahahaha true...
Martin Tse Yea he did. so yea fuck you
my first camera was an APS-C DSLR. i sold that and got a full frame DSLR and used that for years. a few days ago i got my first micro four thirds mirrorless and it is incredible how small it is. i can keep it in my backpack if i want, and maybe i got lucky somehow but my experience with mirrorless battery life has been more than satisfactory. i got four extra batteries if i ever need them or i go camping someday but every time i've taken it out, the battery has lasted the whole time with plenty to spare, and it's not even like technology has advanced, the camera i have came out a year before this video and this battery was manufactured in 2016. even if the battery life was mediocre, the bulk of carrying one or two extra batteries in my pocket is far less than the bulk of carrying around even a crop sensor DSLR, and the increased lens size that comes with that. i don't know if i'll ever be able to go back to anything larger than micro four thirds mirrorless for now on.
"Sony and metabones focus got confused!"
I love that.
Apart from the battery life the rest are pretty weak-sauce reasons though....
yh and I hate running out of power so i walk around with way to many anyway so not the end of the world for me
lol ... no power no shot ..
marque27 well you can charge mirrorless using phone powerbank tho, so lets migrate to mirrorless
ryan nugraha
i actually shoot both DSLR (nikon) and mirrorless (fuji)
Good for you then, i'm a former nikon user myself (D610) but it get broken now, i'm trying to make a decision whether to use DSLR again or mirrorless, haha
DSLR and Mirrorless I have both. But I'm more enjoying using mirrorless.
I enjoy kumamon
+Bum Head u should
if you are about to dump....the other one ..don't do it, donate it to me .
Imran IBAK hahahahaha i won't dump anyone of both
same with me. I've both canon dslr's and panasonic g7 mirrorless . I like more the g7 for video but for stills my Canon 6D full frame is still better especially in low light. I love the evf of the G7 though
Quality of humor not upto the usual level of expectations
to me EVF is better than optical viewfinder. i can review pictures in all conditions, i can see the pictures before i take it
Does "all conditions" include dead battery?
when the battery is dead who cares about the viewfinder. what's the point of using an optical viewfinder if you cannot turn on the camera?
I meant to say when the camera is off. Helps save battery that way while scanning for possible Kodak moments :)
I can have both on dslr, when I simply attach eyepiece extension to the display like all the pro movie cameramans do. :D
laszu i'm talking about stills
4.2K mirrorless photographers dislike this video whilst waiting for their battery to recharge.
Too late...
+Live Tech Australia wot?
+ItsKapow Lol. I already switched to mirrorless.
Don't worry, they'll probably make another video on why you should dump dslr for mirrorless.
+Dong Ku Yu Yep, true.
I'm one of those people. switched from 7d to a7s and I love it~ Well, I do miss the robustness of my 7d... a7s felt so fragile that I had to buy a full leather armor.
I like juice.
+We the Seekers I see...
maybe theres juice in his mug... ever think of that? NO! you only think of yourself.
+Travis Alex You mean the facts in this video? :D
+Travis Alex well i kinda agree with the battery. i have an a6000 now and the battery is half that of the a58 which is an slt camera (both use an evf). it's simply down to how big a battery they can fit into the hand grip
I really love all your videos.Your humor is great...My favourite YT channel...Thanks
EVF's will never use less power than OVF's.
They also won't have the resolution or quality of looking at the actual scene itself.
Mirrorless for video, DSLR for photos.
quantrell which mirrorless does good in low light cause I’ve been hearing none of them do?
Just get and use a camera that suits your style be it DSLR or Mirror-less. I've never bought into the DSLR v Mirror-less argument. if you want ultimate performance and don't mind the size and bulk get a DSLR otherwise if you want smaller more compact system get a mirror-less camera.
Exactly. They have just as much in common than differences. Focus method, mirror and optical viewfinder. That's it. Same thing really.
+Marek Bartnik very well put :)
DRTV has just taken the game to the next level. vids are so much better now
The main annoyance is the start up time. 3 seconds from power on. 7 seconds after a battery swap. Frequent battery swap is bad enough, but 7 seconds blocked out after each swap is tension inducer.
We are in 2018 and since 2017, the problems he found on mirrorless were not existent no more.
+Sabi Teodosiev My A7R II has phase detect AF. Now what?
+Sabi Teodosiev As a cleaning technician, part-time carpenter and professional figure ice skater, I prefer polaroids. But obviously, the internet should rather base it's decisions on the insights of people who start their youtube comments by pointing out they're theoretical physicists.
*****
Is your real name Gordon Freeman? lol
I believe the video explain some of the issues... ;-)
+Marek Bartnik I don't understand this. How could the Sony mirrorless sensor be constantly exposed? The shutter covers it until a shot is made.
LMAO, this is literally one of the funniest Kia and Loc videos!
the single reason I am doing exactly this-selling off my dslr gear to move to mirrorless despite my having pretty nice gear- is the fact that you cannot shoot video with dslr and have autofocus with the f stop open past 3.5... plus I want to have more picture profiles/log...
BOTH. for street photo, i love my X-E1. For almost everything else, sometimes I wish I had a decent DSLR. Why not both?
+echodeluxe also, my X-E1 has gone for two days on one charge before. And thats with heavy shooting, multiple lenses, etc.
+echodeluxe Yup. I'm looking for something like an OM-D for street photography to accompany my EOS 5D that I use for everything else.
+MarchuxProductions any of the Fuji X-Series are an amazing option. Image quality is insane and i mean, Im still using an X-E1 for professional stuff, its great.
echodeluxe OK, those little things look very tempting. Thanks for the heads-up, man!
+MarchuxProductions sure thing!

This aged like milk
Does milk age that quickly?
I still use film cameras now and then.
zenoist2 which one do you use?
I have a Canon rebel 2000 slr. I love using traditional film. Using a Pentax, though, would be cool. But I don't have one.
Camera Sim, yes! I was waiting for you to feature this
I still use my 5d mark iii from 2013 lol
Im planning to buy 1 tho. In 2020
my opinion:
photos: DSLR
video: Mirrorless
get both :D
It's not the camera; but the person behind it that matters, really. The camera is just a tool - it all boils down to whether or not you have the skills. 😉
I'm going to buy a $3000 mirrorless camera to use it like a $200 film camera because my skills are so good but too bad I'm stupid with my money.
Good luck with that. =)
Whoa! Where did THIS come from?! Best digitalRev video in ages!!! 2:14: F-ing hysterical.
I'd add ergonomics. The grip on DSLRs is just superb and helps to keep them level.
iso performance? a7s2
image quality? a7r2
want both? buy both, carry like you used to with DLSR
Also, with the battery life, why is everybody complaining...? My a7 lasts 500+ easily
+Meng Jerry liar on the 500+ shots m8
+Michael Blanco wat, why? Well I do turn off the camera every time during each shot though.
With all the quirks of Sony mirrorless, I found myself shooting much much more since getting an a6300.
well if it comes to the gear weather you shoot or not you should probably find another hobby.
Hear, Hear, well said.
I loved this video...more-so, because it was quite hilarious to me! However, I got a great deal of information and I appreciate that. Thanks for the input.
Humped a medium format film cam around enough to think of a DSLR as a small camera. Love your channel.
Everybody is enjoying their a7rII and a7sII, meanwhile in France we are still waiting for their release........
It was the same thing when the first A7s came out, I had to wait for a long time before beign able to buy it in a "regular" way.
well the a7rII and the sII are only avaible at Special Photographie Traders in Germany, maybe so in France :)
+TURST67 ??? order it on online or amazon or somethin... no? idk. canon is still better tho

+Nikhil Kumar (NikGamesandVFX) take a trip to Dubai and enjoy the warm weather here and you get the chance to get the sony a7rii at the lowest price tag ever, as there is no tax in Dubai
I just switch from Canon dslr to Sony mirrorless.
And it is good switch
4:38 thats why everyone loves kai :D
Good point on battery life. I don't even bother to switch off my two entry-level Canons, a 700D and an 1100D, when I put them down for the day. Canon's power management is *that* good.
100% yes, got 1300 shots and a couple videos out of my 700d when at an airshow
in my opinion, the biggest advantages of mirrorless over dslr are, in mirrorless what you see in the screen is what you get, and mirrorless are lighter.I shoot fuji in jpeg and I like the colors of the pictures so now I dont need to spend time retouching each photo on adobe lightroom.
For mirrorless, get a few batteries on amazon and you are ready.
That intro tho!
I had a mirrorless camera and now I have a dslr the mirrorless was a good camera but auto focus was a bit slower and the electronic viewfinder would give me headaches 99% of what I shoot is motorsports so need a fast auto focus I can see why people like mirrorless though as they are lighter/smaller and if u are shooting slow moving things or still things they are brilliant just not the camera for me
Sony users are like vegans, they think they are never wrong.
But if/when the tech truly stomps on DSLRs, then I will be a happy convert ;D
youve soothed my anxiety over my recent purchase of a 70d
he never shows canon focusing.. paid channel?
The people switching today still get a good price for there old glass.
No Bueno for wildlife or even sports.
love the intro Xd
Great vid Kai, feels like old times again!
I see I’m not the only one without any clue what the orange juice was for but the surrealism is welcome
As a newbie i just easily adjust settings and on Sony i couldn't really understand much :D
Of course I will get more fluent with time, but that's just my first thoughts.
what was your camera? i've never seen a recent sony with evf lagg
Shield S. Yeah there can be some lagg, but with 120fps viewfinder, its almost nothing anymore
Franco da Gama I'm probably going to sell my 70D for an A7sII one day.
I am planning on staying with my 70D for now.
If anything I am planning on getting a full frame DSLR like Canon 6D.
whats happening with you guys lately? Not funny as it was sometime ago...
+Marcelo Tezza *lock and kai* pardon for the auto correct
+Marcelo Tezza ***lok and kai!
+Marcelo Tezza i thought they were fun, just as fun as they were 2 years ago.
are you sure it isn't you whom grew up?
the gh4 has the best battery life of dslr/mirrorless cameras. It also focuses much much much faster and better in the dark than my nikon d750
normally digital rev videos piss me off but this one was actually quite amusing.
DSLR
I keep 'em both. DSLR for professional work, Mirrorless for travel.
I thought mirrorless cameras were only for portability, not to completely replace dslr's.
Thomas Jacobsson New Dslrs are coming out with the ability to shoot 4k (like the coming Nikon D820 and D760).
Mirrorless system cameras will replace DSLR soon, thank God! Fuck obv/mirror/prism system...
A DSLR can be used as if it was a mirrorless, just by turning on the EVF. The OVF is just better.
i really dont get whats so important between mirror and mirrorless.
The only downside I have found is that unlike most dslr or older opticals, Sonys unique frame basically makes most aftermarket lenses unusable or crap unless you buy specialized mounting brackets for each type.
that time crisis comparison was awesome =) loved it
