Dan Hicks will bring joy of music for generations after we all are gone.

Dan may not have gotten rich from his music and style, but it truely enriched my appreciation of music. Of all the vinyl that I own, his albums always put a smile on my face and get my spirits in a fine place. Thanks Dan for all you did.

Sometime around 1976, somewhere around the New Jersey Shore, I was living and enjoying going out to local clubs. One night I stumble into a bar in Fair Haven NJ. Not a reall po;ular place, but here they were, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. Playing for the next 6 night.!! Never saw them before. Myabe heard one or two tunes on the radio. Well by the time that night was over, around 3am... I was buddies with Dan and the band. and was hitting on the Hot licks like no tomorrow! I was 21 at the time and beginning to get my guitar playing chops together. How that changed my life.... I learned a bunch of his tunes. Especially Paycheck Blues and Canned Mujsic being a couple of favories. I moved around the country over the years, San Francicsco, Monterey, Santra Cruz, Dallas, Austin, Kansas City. And in each town everry now and then I'd here, Dan Hicks is playing at XYZ... and I'd find my way there. When I'd run into Dan and get to have a chat, he'd say, What the fuck man, are you following me... LOL yes, over 20 some years. Last time I saw him was in a little restaurant on the Deleware River near New Hope PA... Around 2005 I think. He was one of a kind, Texas Swing at it's finest. Always entertaining to the top. RIP Dan Hicks. Loved you brother. Now I'll drag out the old 6 string and play a few of your tunes this week. Bringin it back.....

Why does Dan Hicks remind me so much of a musical Mark Twain? I read somewhere that the late Jimmy Buffett (another musical legend) respected and borrowed from the genius of Dan Hicks. Thank you for posting this, what a phenom Dan and these musicians are/were. RIP to this story teller genius.

Caught Dan & his amazing band live at Tulagi’s on the Hill in Boulder in ‘72 during their Striking It Rich Tour. Had never heard of him before that night. Needless to say I became a big fan going forward. Over the years, I loved to turn people on to this amazing artist by popping on “Striking” during dinner parties. Universal response was always WOW!
RIP Dan, your unique talent and sly humor is missed by so many. We will all never forget. You are and will always remain a true original!

First new Dan Hicks I have seen in quite a while. Thank you!
I was lucky enough to have seen the classic lineup (with Sid, Maryanne, Naomi) twice. Swingin'est show there ever was or ever will be.

was at a guys house in the late 80's, he was playing records for the band I was in to help broaden our musical horizons. at one point he puts on "the Last Train to Hicksville" and i was immediately engrossed. I asked to see the album cover, as he hands it to me he say's "you'll never find this record". Well, it wasn't easy but I eventually found ALL of Dan's early albums. Then, in the late 90's he was rediscovered by Surfdog records and I was lucky enough to see him live a few times and even got him to sign my copy of "Striking it Rich". His music and character has made a huge impression on me as a songwriter, sandwich-maker and satirist. God Bless Dan Hicks ! ( *thanks for posting this video)

Saw him back in the day at Clark University in Worcester, MA. At the time of "Where's the Money" .... he showed late, and there was some hostility between him and the jocks in the audience ....
"Woostah? Woostah? Who's kidding who??? I'm from LA ... you know, swimming pools, movie stars.....".....

Last train to Hicksville! In 1973 I had somehow managed to snare the album, in total ignorance of what it was apart from a cool cover. This was in rural Sydney Australia in a rented house where I imposed my presence on my friends who put up with me and then I hammered their record player with constant replaying of the absolute genius of that album.
Until the record had to be hidden in the water tank, I had overstayed my welcome by many moons.
Ultimately last train to Hicksville was a joy , it was all that Django could have been and way more. He was international at the wrong time and too many of that generation would not loosen their appreciation of music.
God be with you Dan and all of your band mates.

Dan grew up in my hometown, Santa Rosa, CA. And went to my high school before the cross town one opened. They had joint class reunions and he'd just show up and play. Saw him a few times, locally, not enough!

The singers are so, so good. They (Dan and the women) sing fast with such precision. I love the whole band. I saw them only once live, in NC, and the small theater was half empty. They were wonderful. Dan was so damn funny.

I saw him in Ft Worth Texas in the late 70's. We sat on the first row and really enjoyed the show, though he was not in a good mood!! lol. I actually had the nerve to ask him for his autograph during break and he got mad at me!! He was a darling in the end to give me his autograph, which I still have today.

Dan wore steel fingertips while he strummed the jazz chords as opposed to a pik. I find that difficult, always getting the steel tips caught in the strings.

He died of throat and liver cancer 2016, usually but not always, associated with a certain lifestyle of hard alcohol consumption and Dan certainly indulged in it; I suspect that's why he looks tired. You've go to die of something I suppose; but he left the party earlier than he had too, through his over indulgence.
