With all muscle testing you have the patient move through full active range of motion against gravity first. If they can move through full range then you know they are at least a grade 3 and can test to see if they are a grade 5 or 4. If they cannot move through full AROM against gravity then you know they are below a grade 3 so you do not complete the test for grades 5 or 4. Hope that helps to clarify the order of testing!
