All those people commenting that there's no ocean where you live ... Take a vacation! I'm in Hawaii right now on a 2-week quest to learn surfing. Staying in only one island, Oahu. I signed up for professional surfing lessons in Waikiki, Honolulu. Today we went out at Kahanmoku Beach, where we kept paddling what seemed to me to be deep into the ocean, but turns out the water was shallow enough that I could just stand in the water. My coach said that's why they brought me there - I'm a total beginner. (And I'm a worse swimmer - can't even get my breathing right, and run out of stamina within a minute of swimming. My Dad used to surf but it wasn't anything I ever asked about. Thanks for making this so informative and approachable! I hope someday soon after quarantine I can give it a chance. Until then I'm stuck on land with a skateboard to "practice".
I got caught in a rip current one time. You hear about them but until you’re in one you really can’t understand how powerful they are. The one that got me actually took me under water, it didn’t seem like I was under for a couple seconds and when I came up I was a good 100 yards out from shore. It was wild.
On my 16th birthday in Maui Hawai, I landed head first in a coral reef that hit my face. I almost died because I fainted and was drowning but some locals saved me. I ended up with deep wounds on my face but with creams and no sun for a year I have no scars. This really traumatized me and I never surfed again ... maybe one day I’ll try again one day
Similar thing happened to me, last year I was 15 and I always wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle but my parent wont allow me so I secretly took my dad's scooter and learned, I was getting really good until I lost control of the throttle and accelerated towards a tree. Luckily just a few meters before hitting the tree I managed to take control and brake hard! I was like 1 foot away from crashing lol. That traumatized me so much too I went home and promised to never touch a motorcycle. Truth is Im never gonna stop trying and you shouldnt stop too!

Last year I started surfing at Biarritz (a city in France) and I surfed for a week the waves were quit small since it was my first time (i had a coach all week) I was already pretty well at swimming and now I’m good at swimming I just started surfing again this year at Biarritz and whilst I was paddling towards my coach to catch a wave there was a huge wave like a giant wall of water coming to me so I tried going over it but it was too big so I got pushed all the way back and whilst in the water while getting pushed was terrifying but o tried not to panic and I didn’t do anything I just stayed underwater till the wave pushed me all the way back to the shore but when I catch a wave my coach makes us take small waves since I’m still kind of a beginner and I stand up then I just fall right back in when I stand but sometimes I make it. Hope u liked my today’s story of what happened at my lesson today

Hey. Great video for newbies like me. So glad I viewed it before heading out to embarrass 😳 myself for the first time. Plenty of basic knowledge I did not have 11 minutes ago. Thank you
This is a very nice description of the rules. I couldn’t understand the terms because I live in a land locked state and have never been surfing. Knowing how to take care of others is the most important part of any sport.
Sea Angler and Skaterboader from Wales here! At tip #5, what I suggest doing is fish at a spot/ venue to see how rough the conditions are, what type of level the waves become and etc. You can hike up to see a spot but once you get there, what else can you do? Well, other than go fishing, you can fossil hunt among the rocks (remember not to actually take them home, especially on the UK's "Jurassic Coast") or have a picnic among yourself or friends and/ or family. ...but of course, my way of looking at it, would be to do some recreational sea fishing where all fish are returned to the water unharmed. Just allowing for other ideas!
I’ve never hurt myself with my surfboard rlly bad but I have cuz there was a giant wall like wave coming towards me while paddling and it was too high to go over and I didn’t know what else to do so I just went through it and i was stuck underwater for at least 20 seconds I tried not to panick but I was panicking cuz I didn’t know if I would drown or not it’s actually scary after the wave was became smaller I came back up I could finally breathe then the wave just pulled my board and the leash on my leg so my board pulled me leg and I almost did the split in the water
I have some tips remember to be centered in the board that’s the biggest tip. The stringer on the board is the center and remember to keep your body down the middle of the board. If you do that you most likely will not nose dive and will have more fun. I also recommend finding a friend or someone who knows how to surf to watch what your doing and ask if your doing anything wrong. I did that and the people were very understanding and helpful. Also it is never to late to start surfing it is a very healthy sport!!! Remember stick with it, it will change your life!
Also when I was young and learning to surf I put tape on the floor of my room about 1 1/2 feet apart. I would lay down and CENTER MY BODY on the tape like it was a surf board. I would pop up using my hands and feet as springs and try to have my feet land on the tape as I would do on a surfboard. This creates habits that will reflect in the water when you try to pop up in the surf. This can create good habits but remember you have to be carful it can create bad habits as well. Remember when you pop in on your floor DO NOT LOOK DOWN it’s bad!! If you do that in the surf you will nose dive and that’s bad. Practice on land will tape it will help create good habits. Remember stick will it I see a lot of new surfers try to surf and get frustrated and quit right then and there everyone goes through the same thing. It sucks but when you finally get the hang of surfing it will change your life swear to you it will! Stick with it stay safe!
can someone tell me if getting a 6'3 board as my beginner board is a bad idea? i am 5'7 and pretty in shape, since i also do club swimming. so if anyone can tell me please let me know if it will be impossible to stand and if its worth it or not
Keira Edwards I’m not quite sure what board it is but definitely not a foamie. It’s an al merrick wooden board and I think it might be a fish or short board. Thanks for the reply tho, how long did it take to learn?
D St I’ve heard fish boards are good for learning and I think my foamie is a shortboard if that counts for anything. I’ve been surfing for a year and tbh, I’ve still got a long way to go (mainly because I’m really slack and unmotivated 😅). If you’re going surfing fairly regularly (eg. Once or twice a week) you’ll pick up the basics quicker than if you’re only surfing a couple of times a month. Hope that helps!
D St I learned on a 7’0 catch surf log. They are really good to learn on and catch surf has all different sizes. You could get a log anywhere from 6-9 feet. I still ride that board when there are smaller waves it’s very fun
Yes, you can learn by yourself but make sure your safety and the safety of others is your first concern. Here is a useful article for you to look at : barefootsurftravel.com/livemore-magazine/security-aspects-surfing
So I wanted to ask if I should use a soft top 6 foot since I am thinking it is maneuverable and buoyant but I was wondering if you could duck dive with it. I am 99 pounds. Also I was thinking of keeping it till it breaks since it is good. So any tips would be helpful!
That one point, when you are so bored with your life during lockdown that you'll start to want to know how to surf, even though, you live in the center of Europe, have fear of heights, depths, unstable things to stand on, and are a bad swimmer.

No, you don’t. It’s more about maintaining a clean wax job and not letting it get too old or brown from the sun. Fresh wax jobs are personal preference, but you want to ensure you are at least apply a new wax job with the changing of seasons.
