You can glamour your outfits if you don't like being a unicorn :) Quests to unlock the glamour system should be available near the waking sands in Western thanalan. You can either glam individual items, or make a whole outfit at a glamour dresser in an inn using the glamour plate system. Either way, you have to use glamour prisms to do so (can buy a variety of ways, grand company seals are a fairly easy way to do so)
To answer your question about other final fantasy games, no they are not relevant to 14’s story. Each game is stand alone with reoccurring tropes between them. FF14 does have a lot of references to other FF games but they aren’t required to know. When they are talking about previous incidents of primal that are referring to past events in the game’s world. Some of this is mentioned in text/lore from other sources and other stuff may relate to the now unplayable 1.0 version. You are playing the relaunch of the game that started in 2.0.
The ARR finale dungeons got reworked this expansion, with the fights brought up to modern standards. Once you finish it, you can check out ARR’s endgame content - some of it’s easy to run even now, like Crystal Tower, while the harder stuff is usually run in Party Finder, either as unsynced (to just beat it) or with min ilvl and no Echo (to run it at about the difficulty it was when it was released). Enjoy!
The wind making your robe go crazy is because you have the game running above 60 fps. I made a quick video about it, but basically just limit your fps to 60 and all the physics in the game will be corrected (even jiggle physics)

Solo instances will not change so if you see a shining NPC mid quest you should probably disband. The Best Gear for capstone levels 50, 60, 70, 80, and soon 90 ... is purchasable by Poetics Tomestone currency and would be good enough until Levels 54, 64, 74 etc.

Summoner dong! you can also turn off headwear display with a button on the character sheet.
