I recognised one of the 40mm Bofors Guns that are now in the Curragh Museum. But the footage of a plane flying through Ack-Ack looks intense, and the big naval guns at the end have me enthralled... I must do more research!

@killian mul Without the existence of both the Royal Navy and RAF (but especially without the navy) as they were between 1939 and 1941, and Britain being fully at war with them, Nazi Germany-even with their smaller and less powerful navy-would’ve easily been able to invade Ireland by sea, and to then proceed to completely and utterly pulverize the entire independent Irish Republic into submission, blitzkreig-style.
      Simple as that.

We didn't have the manpower nor the finances to have a well resourced conventional army. Ireland's biggest strength has always been guerrilla warfare, we're masters at it which is why the mighty British Army could not defeat a couple of thousand of IRA men over a 30 year period . It's not that hard to invade Ireland but as history shows it's near impossible to conquer it and subdue the people.

@@stallthedigger2599 Couldn't defeat? The IRA never defeated any army in battle, if the SS had colonised Ireland Himmler would've made the Black and Tans look like a pub fight in comparison.

@@stallthedigger2599 The mighty British Army didn't want to defeat the IRA in the recent troubles to have done so without political change would only have meant another campaign in 20 or 30 years time. Both the British and Irish governments had joined to stop the IRA in its tracks in the 1950s but all that had done is kick the political can down the road for 15 years they weren't going to make the same mistake.
As far as the British government was concerned Partition was a temporary solution and as originally drafted the 1922 treaty left the door open for unification. As Enoch Powell said the IRA and the British government had the same long term objective.
Of the Irish mastery of guerrilla warfare in the "War of Independence." Professor Lee of Cork University said they were fortunate not to be facing the Germans. They had ways of dealing with recalcitrant populations that made the Black and Tans look like Boy Scouts.
For example early in the recent troubles when the IRA used demonstrators to bring the army onto the streets and when a soldier was shot the crowd clapped, cheered and sang Republican songs. If a German soldier was shot in Holland in WW2 they grabbed the nearest half dozen or so men, put them against a wall and shot them leaving the bodies there for the day as an example. I don't think the Dutch clapped and cheered which I suppose proves they are not as brave as the Irish.

More like 50 seconds. No way was Ireland prepared to fight any conventional battles. Our best bet would have been to slow the German advance as much as possible & then start using large guerrilla tactics much larger than the 1916 - 1923 revolution & war. Would have needed Yugoslav or Greek partisan sizes or the size of the Vietnamese against the US. Spilt into flying columns of 100, we could get as many Stens as needed from the Brits in Belfast & 303s & whatever GPMGs & HMGs they could give us because if they invaded Ireland they would need to invade all of it,.

Actually the. British disagreed! In 1941 the British, after being allowed to inspect Irish Army bases and summer manoeuvres, concluded that the Irish would be likely to hold and effectively counter attack any likely German invasion. It was expected that the Irish would hold the Germans on the Suir and Barrow, and would harass the Germans allowing their supplies to deplete before the counter offensive. Remember German troops would have to cross a wide sea, with the RN and other navies in it and Ireland was mostly beyond German fighter and bomber range. The British assumed a maximum of 25,000 German paras and some airdropped light armour and weaponry used in an invasion of Irela d. They would have been outnumbered and outgunned by the Irish who had a reasonable amount of machine guns, artillery, a smattering or tanks, but more importantly domestically produced IFVs. The likely reason the Germans never tried it is because they made the same assessment. The British were also very impressed with Irish army intelligence who had managed to catch and turn Nazi spies inIrela d and were able to send decoded messages on German sea activities to the British.

People misunderstand the nature of a likely German invasion. While Brotaon was still in the war no large sea landing would have been likely so it would have been paratroop only. The Irish would have outgunned and outnumbered them.

@@thiest1205 The German navy was quite small in WW2. We had a relatively decent handful of Anti ship cannons that were deployed around our islands. They were well capable with taking out ships.
Our navy also had torpedo ships that can also take out destroyers and subs. Our land forces was quite big with 140k personal equipped with anti tank weapons including artillery surpport. Our air corps was quite sizable with over 80 aircraft and operated the hurricane. They also had bombers but a very small handful and would be used to bomb the Germans if they even managed to step foot on the island. Not to mention invading an island nation is extremely difficult especially when the UK would help Ireland and it's defence forces. Today's Irish defence forces has shrunk by alot but so has everyone else's. We aren't defenceless in my eyes but we do have a small defence forces which is actually good in a way because it's alot easier to train and equip a smaller force than a bigger one. They would be alot quicker to. Our defence forces can always do Guerrilla warfare, and they would be very effective at that job.

You are overestimating the German ability to invade Ireland.- A sea bourne invasion was impossible meaning it had to be lightly armed paratroops. The German para force were not up to taking on a project of that size. Also they would have had no air support as Ireland was mostly out of range for most German offensive aircraft.
