I was 15 rows back when I saw this live and still almost died during the "sore!" sections - this has been their anthem forever and it's hopefully always gonna be on the playlist.

You should take a look at this song when they played at the Red Fox Festival to a completely female audience (some of the video shows the wrong audience, there were I think 5? fox concerts with different themes, but the audio is from the all female audience and you can really hear the difference, also the way the girls interact with them, it's awesome. th-cam.com/video/7pfSwQdeZC4/w-d-xo.html

Great reaction. 'Megitsune' is a big favourite, often coming top in fan polls and it is the song they have played live more times than any other. It is also arguably the song that showcases better than most what BABYMETAL are about and one that truly reflects their Japanese culture the best starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen or koto, I have no idea on the difference) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains the fox mask Su was behind🦊) which, in Japanese mythology, are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive.
It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional subservient female role in Japanese society saying that is changing I think - or maybe it is - whilst also praising and celebrating the women who have played that role over the years for their strength.
They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings ("crying at heart, smiling at face") are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not deceptive kitsune (foxes), they are maiden-like megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong.
The melody used in build up and in the breakdown in the middle of the song is from the very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms).
When Su spoke a few words and did the high kick she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss.
That is SO cool. I absolutely adore that kind of message!

"Megitsune" is one of their most loved songs and their most played live one: 342 times... and counting!
The style sub-genre is electronicore, a mix between electronica and metalcore with a hardcore style breakdown.
The melody on the intro and the breakdown is from a well known Japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" (Cherry Blossoms).
The word "Megitsune" = "me" + "kitsune" which means female + fox so, vixen. Hence the "kitsune" mask play.
During the kitsune mask scene Moa always says or do something funny to break Su. She always succeed. They usually cut it out of the Blu-ray edit but you can see how Su was laughing behind the mask when she lowers it. In the Legend-MM version they kept everything: mostly Moa blowing kisses to Momoko. 😁
In Japanese folklore, the "kitsune" is an entity capable to transfigure into a human form (mainly into a young lady) with the objective to deceive men and cause them pain. So, they sing that they aren't "kitsunes" but "megitsunes", "pure-hearted maiden-like female foxes", as the lyrics say. And yes, it's basically a women empowerment song.
BABYMETAL fans are known collectively as "The ONE" and "kitsune" / "megitsune" individually. So, you can tell this song is important.

I really love the message, nowadays I feel like this kind of topic is more of being used by incompetent people to hate on each other, most of them try to say the right things but in a wrong way. With BABYMETAL not talking about the flat way empowerment have been used but actually what it is to be a woman & overcome the hardships you can see they really take the message at heart aside from being professionals in the stage, but the difference there is they say the right things in the right way, no hate, just a showcase of love & knowledge of a powerful & valid theme by these ladies, & no one better than SU herself to sing such a song 🦊🤘

I've experienced Megitsune live ten (?) times, and this one was the loudest and most hectic performance of this song that I have been part of.
Megitsune is one of their most beloved songs by fans, and they play it live at almost every show they do, and it always goes off. At last count, they have played it live 342 times! Su-metal finds this song particularly challenging and doesn't believe that she has fully mastered even after all this time. She uses it as her warm up song because if she can sing this, she can sing the rest of the set with ease.
That is so crazy! I thought she sung it perfectly...it is so cool that she uses this to measure her personal growth
